    Hamsters as feeders?
I've been thinking of supplementing hamsters into my snakes' diets to add some variance (though I know this isnt necessary in snakes). Is there any significant different between feeder rats/mice and hamsters?

Hamsters are higher in fat. Source: https://www.rodentpro.com/informatio...ertebrate-prey

In my experience ball pythons prefer hamsters-so I had some trouble switching mine back to mice/rats (which I did eventually-of course). :)

Too much fur, aggressive when fed live, and are like crack and if you ever have to re-home your snake or can no longer find hamster which are expensive it will become an issue as they will be imprinted and refuse everything else, stick to commonly found preys.

    1. Never feed live unless the snake absolutely won't eat anything else.
    2. Hamster fur is hard for them to pass and digest.
    3. Hamsters are very aggressive if live and you can't buy them dead so what, you're gonna murder a bunch of hamsters?
    4. They have a much higher fat content and lower overall nutrient content.

I'd recommend against it. It's nice that you want to add variety to your snake's diet but it's not necessary. They can't really "taste" and as long as they are getting a full spectrum of necessary nutrients they're good to go. If you're worried about them not getting enough vitamins you can use a powder or droplet supplement although they aren't usually necessary unless the snake is malnourished or recovering from an illness/injury.

I DEFINITELY would not feed live! I found frozen hamsters which is why I was curious lol 👌

RodentPro has hamsters on sale right now. If you order rats from them throw the cheaper hamsters in the order.

My BP's eat ASF, rats an fowl. I mix it up. I just make sure the size is correct. The day old chicks or ducklings break BPs out of fasting. So do smaller stinky male ASF.

When frozen quality feed can be found cheap it might be time to buy cheap an stack it deep.

    Good luck!

To answer your question properly we need to know what type of snake you have.

If you have a BP, then that's going to be a resounding no from me.
