Same here. Also because the landlords only allow birds, cats, and dogs. Shh, don't tell anyone...:whisper:

Ditto. Well at least the part about not having a yard.... although my landlord doesn't care about my snakes, he tells everything in the damn building about them.... good thing he doesn't know exactlly how many I have.... :D:8:

When I was looking for a place to rent, all the people I talked to who said no pets allowed, said snakes were ok.

Well when I asked why, it's mostly because of new carpet, or newly painted walls or the place comes fully renovated. Dogs & Cats = pee & poo places, scratch walls, destroy carpet, furniture and such. On the other hand snakes stay in a tank, and don't do any damage that the others can do.

Mine was the exact opposite. Everywhere I went they allowed pets but said no to reptiles. Which makes no sense at all because a 40lb dog can do WAY more damage to a room than a ball python.

They're not worried about damage; they think if the snake gets out, it could escape into the walls!:O Which is absurd if you have a secure enclosure.

Re: Snake walks!
I walk my snakes in the park. Bring them out, set them down. I swear they follow me. For a while, then get bored. Just like kids ^_^

Re: Snake walks!
I tend to take my snakes out in my backyard for photos and thats about it. Typically people are afraid of snakes and do not react well to them being around in public places. Its unfair but with the current political situation all snake keepers need to be aware of how their actions can negatively influence peoples views around them.

No, I prefer not to take my snakes out and stress them out un-necessarily if I can possibly help it.

Did you know ahead of time that she was afraid of snakes? If you did, then that was pretty disrespectful and can actually work against those of us who are fighting for our rights to keep our snakes, given the current climate and the bills that are being introduced that may take that right away from us.
Just my very opinionated :2cent:

Re: Snake walks!
I have my own property and I do allow my snakes some fresh air during nice weather-

Just a few shots of some of my babies enjoying the outdoors. I've a walled porch area that I let them explore & the bigger ones get some yard time, but only when I've got 2 or more sets of eyes since it's a big property. I rather like to keep it private as not all folks like snakes or some folks may REALLY like my snakes. ;)

Re: Snake walks!
During the late spring and summer, I do take some of my snakes outside for a bit. I'm lucky, because we have a fenced in yard. The ratsnakes love to explore, and the BPs seem to do the "periscoping" thing a lot when outside, very curious of their surroundings. I only take them out once or twice a month, and not all of them get to go outside, because some seemed to get stressed, staying balled up all the whole time. Others really seem to enjoy it.

Re: Snake walks!
Snakes are not dogs. They are not "walking" type pets. And considering 90% of the public is afraid of snakes, what would the point be in taking them off your property?
I find taking snakes on walks to be highly irrisponsible. I guy around here used to walk around with a labyrinth burm. I thought it was an afrock and I asked him if it was. And he said it was an Okatee Burm. I don't even think that creature exists. He was in a public park and his snake has peices of shed coming off all over the place. It looked miserable.
The guy tried to sell me drugs.

Re: Snake walks!
I've taken Atticus with me to the pet store I bought her from a couple times but I'm not sure if taking either her or Onyx out like that would be something I'd like to do on a regular basis.
It's always funny to witness reactions, but because the public is more interested in owning a dog than they are owning a snake, people are more susceptible to overreacting or act smug about it.

Re: Snake walks!
Pythons and Boas are illegal in San Francisco (within city limits), so that's a definite no-no around here. :colbert: I have a fenced patio they roam around sometimes, but only when I can supervise very closely - because they could easily find a hole to slip through, and end up in my neighbor's yard. Not good! The other day I answered the door with Delilah around my neck, because I didn't have time to put her back... luckily the delivery guy just said "sweet snake." :)
Short answer to the OQ - no, I don't go for walks with my snakes. It's simply too risky in too many ways...

Hahaha! I just got the craziest image in my mind...Snakes on a Leash! LOL! That would be pretty funny though, to walk a snake on a leash...also, it wouldn't exactly work...random moment!

Re: Snake walks!
I take my snake to friends or to the petstore. I've actually gotten people to really think about owning a snake ( and rats even, the irony ), with or without my Vesta with me.

Re: Snake walks!
ok, Lets review basic BP care and husbandry...
1) BP's are nocturnal... you have them outside in the sunshine.
2) BP's are not arboreal... people put them in trees for pics.
3) BP's like dark, snug, hides...you have them outside in wide open space.
I would think the reason they are active outside is because they are stressed and simply want a dark, snug space to sleep. That's probably why they periscope...
Come on now. Lets practice what we preach here...

Re: Snake walks!
I'm very hesitant in taking chopper out when I have company over....even at night, let alone taking him out in the middle of the day in public for people to freak out over. I think sometimes people want to think their snakes are like dogs when they just aren't. I say just get a dog if you want something that you can take for a walk. Let the snake get his/her beauty sleep during the day like they're supposed to. How happy would you be if someone came into your bedroom at 3AM just to wake you up for no reason....and then keep you awake for a while on top of that? I know I'd be just a little cranky! I'm sure the snake is just a bit cranky and stressed too getting woken up when he should be resting as well. Just my 2 cents on the subject.

Re: Snake walks!
I don't take my snakes outdoors unless it's for a quick picture in natural light. And I've only carried a couple of them to the pet store, but that was to have them probed back before I knew how to do it myself. I don't see the point in risking your animal's safety just so you can get your kicks. You're taking your snake out of his warm and dark hide to parade him around in the sunlight or through the aisles of an air conditioned store. Not very pleasant. If he's more energetic outdoors he's most likey just eager to find a new hiding spot.
My biggest peeve is seeing people walking around in public with a large snake around their neck. If something spooks that snake and he constricts out of panic, guess who's air and blood supply is going to be cut off? About a month ago I went into the pet store for feeders, and they had just hired one of the employee's daughter to work in reptiles. She had brought in her dad's 6 ft burm in with her and was carrying it around draped around her neck. What a great way to teach responsible pet ownership to your customers, huh?

Sounds like a good way to pick up some mites... or worse..

Re: Snake walks!
Even though I've had pets literally all my life, none have been reptiles. As a totally new snake owner, I was wondering if our BP needs exercise. Does it need to be set down on the floor for a few minutes a week/month to simply stretch out and move in that beautifully snakey way?
The only reason I haven't done it is that it would be TOO easy for it to disappear underneath or behind something and then be unreachable. I'm also now realizing that our li'l BP just wants to be curled up in her hide. When she moves around after we hold her for a little while, it seems she just wants to get back to her hide rather than enjoy new sights.
Mind you, the few times I've seen BPs out in public with their owners who let me hold or touch them were the times I came to really like BPs more than other pet snakes. It's not ALWAYS bad. But yes, I realize us snake folks are a tiny minority, darn it.

Re: Snake walks!
My boa loves to be outside. My female BP gets a bit stressed and is not active much. My male BP seems to like it, though.

Are you serious? I sure hope not. Whether or not a snake is born in captivity isn't going to change much when it comes to their instincts.

Re: Snake walks!
Just a quick thing to add:
I was chatting with my friend who is a herp vet a couple weeks ago and he was telling my about one of his clients that would take her snake to the park by her house. One day she took him right after they had sprayed the lawn with something, within two days her snake died.
My advice; if you have to take your snake outside, make sure you know the lawn. If its not yours you can't be sure what is on it.

Re: Snake walks!
I've taken them out when just walking around outside, but it's rare. I think I've done it maybe three or four times, and most of those were at night where people would have to be paying close attention to notice the snake.
I don't want to give people any more fodder for attacking us reptile folks than necessary, though I long to be able to take out any one of my snakes at my leisure and not feel like I'm going to be randomly arrested. (I read a news article once about a guy who was taking his snake for a walk. He was arrested and charged with public endangerment and animal cruelty. Grrrr.) It's so sad that we can't enjoy our pets as much as the furry-loving folk just because people overreact when it comes to reptiles (and snakes in particular). I know a lot of people who are deathly afraid of dogs, but there are no laws against walking dogs.
The only pets I don't have qualms about taking outside are the beardies.
