So Tempted....

Today when I was getting around to pickup some food for my snakes, I happen to go by the reptile section(which I normally avoid due to bad conditions). So anyways they had 2 albino ball pythons listed as gopher snakes I believe or something around that, and were only asking $15 a piece. I almost decided to buy both of them.

I'm not into albinos. I may buy them to sell them to somebody else. What do the albinos go for?

They are definately albino balls. The owner's are stupid but I don't think they are that stupid. I'm thinking they just forgot to relabel.

Call it what you want, but I wouldn't own an albino snake period. Only way I would get something albino is if I was going to profit on a sale from it. Also $15 a piece, not 2 for 15, and they were listed as gophers.

He already told you the place looks like crap and he wouldn't buy an animal there. Why would you want one? Spend a few bucks and buy a quality animal It's not all about the cheapest.

That is the other reason I wouldn't purchase anything from them, I honestly thought about it because I knew I could resell them, but something didn't look right about them. Not to mention they're kept on dry reptile bark.

I hate having to purchase mice & crickets from there.

So anyways, i'm fixing to go back to the petstore because the other one I went to yesterday to get some food from was closed and won't be open till Saturday. So I will take those pictures for everybody.

Anyways, so I went in there today, they have moved some things around, and now instead of having the 2 albino ball pythons, which are were moved somewheres, couldn't find them, they have put 2 baby albino burms where they were, and looking around further, quite a few stuff is mislabeled. Pictures are coming in a minute, just have to resize them.

Look at all these balls, this and next picture are the same tank. Also look at the water bowl, I have no clue what that is in there as it was hard to see, but I think feces. Not only do they not have enough substrate but no heating.

I know they are albino burms, the albino balls were moved. They have a place in the back where they keep mice & other snakes. I think they were moved back there.

It's ok. That store is horrible, you should see the rest of it, but I didn't want to get seen snapping pictures of the entire store. I just snabbed the reptile section up and told them I was gonna show my nephew because I was getting a snake for him.

I see what people mean when they say our store is the cleanest they've ever seen... I had no idea other places were that bad :O The place I work at is the only reptile store I've ever been to and I think I'll keep it that way (I'd probably find myself trying to teach those morons how to care for a snake in vein). That's kind of apalling...

It's because they don't care....They're their to make the all mighty $ and they don't care who...or what...they hurt to get it. It makes me really mad when I see stuff like this. :rage:

Those are pretty horrid conditions, but I've seen much, much worse.

I'm guessing they just have everything mislabeled because their employees are too lazy to label them correctly. Ask the store manager if they have the previous snakes you saw in the tank (Albino Ball Pythons). If the do have them in the back, I'm sure they will tell you.

I'm pretty sure, they wouldn't have sold them for $15 each if they have a Pastel listed for $400. Again, I am guessing that they are just too lazy to clean the enclosures and properly label them.

I do agree with another post I read, if you are interested in an Albino (which you said you weren't), buy one for a reputable breeder. With a store like that, there is no telling what else you can bring home with the snake (IBD, Parasites, RIs, etc.) So if you are truly not interested in buying one for personal reasons and unwilling to take the risk, leave them for someone else, just imo though. :)

As for their housing issues, print off some caresheets for the owner and offer to help them clean and set the snakes up for free. It's just a matter of donating your time and energy and most pet stores will accept. Especially smaller stores, most of them don't know they are doing anything wrong. Education is the key. If they can't keep up with it after educating them and donating some time, they are a lost cause and I would completely cut ties with their store.

Just a side note, anytime I go to handle someone else's collection (pet store or personal collection), I change clothes and shower before even walking in the room with my own collection. You never know what can hitch a ride on you.

Yea I don't handle other peoples snakes. Like you said, i'm not interested in albino snakes at all, I just know that those weren't the same snakes I had seen yesterday. One main reason is because one of the albino balls had a horrible shed, and they had repti bark for the balls, instead of whatever that is with the burms. I will ask them if they would like some care sheets, but i've told them how to properly house them before and they have never listened.

Anybody in their right mind who knew even a little about ball python morphs, even if they didn't LIKE albinos woulda snapped them two up in a heartbeat for $15 a piece.....they could've resold them superfast for minimally $300 each, and gotten ther money back a millionfold!!! If I ever saw two albino balls in even the crappiest dive of a petstore for $15, you can bet MJ's diamond glove I woulda walked outta there with two albinos, even if it was the last $30 I had to my name.

While you're at it, please be so kind as to clarify something else for me......are you also stating that you would buy those pythons (which are being kept in horrible conditions and may harbor unknown parasites and/or diseases) and sell them for a profit?

Would you dishonestly sell them to some poor unknowing sap? Or would you properly quarantine them and take them to a qualified herp vet to make sure that they are clean (inside and out)?

Would you tell that poor sucker who antes up $300 bucks for those snakes where you got them?

The conditions of that store look decent compared to the store I go to in Columbus. In the winter they usually have about 4 or 5 full grown sulcata tortoises in about a 6'x7' enclosure. They also had one that was in a tank that was just about as wide as the tortoise. I asked why there was a full grown RTB in a 1'x3' enclosure and there was a very young retic in an enclosure that was about 6'x4'x3' enclosure, and they said, "because boas like being in small places, and retics need open space"

Its the same story at the images posted on this thread, with the stuck sheds, sheds still sitting in enclosures, feces in the enclosures, multiple snakes/animals in the same enclosure, and extravagant price tags on the animals as well.

The owner also likes to flaunt how he does a great service by having newspaper clippings of him bringing snakes to schools for showings and he also has hand written notes from kids who thank him for doing such a great thing.

I can't wait until I get a car so i don't have to rely on their services.

You're killing me here. She never said she wanted to flip them. What she said (from what I can tell) is that IF there were $15 Albinos, somebody would have snapped them up in a minute, if only to resell them for a huge profit.

Why would I apologize? I called BS on the whole thing and there were no pics to back it up. The place looks like a craphole run by the dregs of society but I didn't see pics of $15 Albino Balls.

1st. I said, I'm NOT saying he's dishonest. I simply said i didn't beleive it.
2nd. I said a person who knew even a little about morphs COULD resell them if they were so inclined to do so, IF there were $15 BPs.
3rd. If that DID happen to me, I WOULD have purchased them both.....I have been pining for albinos forever to add to my collection, but have been unable to afford. For $15 a piece in a dive like that, I would have called it a rescue...:D, and then called the authorities reporting the place.
4th. You are being extremely hostile. Please be a bit less defensive. We are talking about a situation which has not been backed up by photos.
Also, may I ask what YOU would have done if it were you that came across the same situation??????

I NEVER have and NEVER will "flip" animals. I was also just trying to make a point by saying someone COULD.....putting emphasis on the value of the two albinos. Even in the crappiest store, Neal could've bought them and rescued them for his own collection. I mean, think about it....if the place had all its animals confiscated, and then later rehabbed and adopted out, what's the diffference if someone who really wanted to have those two albinos for their own collection bought them first for $15, properly quarantined them, and brought them back up to a good condition to later add to their BP collection?
