Could i keep my BP in a tub?
Hey everyone im getting another baby BP soon(either a pin or a mojove) and i want to put him in a tub instead of a tank to save some money and space..

the only thing i was wondering is will the humidity get to high? i live near the beach and the humidity in my bps TANK is at like 58-60% all the time(exept during shed), and i am afraid the humidity will be to high in the tub.. would it be possible to cut a giant hole in the top and hot glue or zip tie some chicken wire securely or something to get better ventilation and lower the humidity?

    thanks

Sure, you can keep them in tubs. If the humidity is too high you can solder holes in the side of the tub and the lid.

No, I just skimmed it. What were you using for substrate? You may be able to use substrate that is less likely to hold humidity, like newspaper.

Use newspaper, and I've heard that high humidity is really only a problem when condensation starts to build up un the cage.

Aspen would be just fine to use. For me, Aspen holds in the humidity quite well when I mist it. I live in a hot area with low humidity, so I have trouble keeping the humidity in the tank. This makes Western Hognoses SO MUCH EASIER to take care of for me lol, they like the low humidity. You can use these substrates: Sani Chips, Aspen Bedding, Newspaper, and Paper towels. That's all I could think of that don't really keep in humidity, and good luck with controlling the humidity!

If you cut a screen out on top of your lid id just recommend watching the temps a little more. I have two 12 quart tubs that i use for my BP. One is his living quarters and the other is his feeding tub. I have a top with holes drilled in it and atop with 80% cut off and replaced with screen. At first i used the screen but the temperatures fluctuate more with a screen top. Now i use the ones with the holes and the temps are much more steady and still no condensation. Granted i live in the adirondacks so my temperature changes might be a little more drastic from day to day since the weather is awful here most of the time. But we've been having 95% relative humidity outside and between 60-75% in the house. I didnt have an condensation except once right by his water dish when i moved his aspen bedding out of the way and put it directly on the bottom of the tub where the heat pad is right underneath.

so ur saying that i shoud make like half of his thing screen and the other half holes? that would be perfect. and the Ball python will be fine as long as theres no condensation dripping from the sides?

Re: Could i keep my BP in a tub?
As for making a giant square in the top for screen i took and exacto knife and just went over the area i wanted once or twice. The knifes cut the tops really easy and then i just cut out a piece of soft plastic screen (not sure what it was made of) that was bigger than the hole and hot glued it to the outside edges of the top. Takes about 10 minutes. Its really easy and my hatchling bp would never be able to rip of the screen or anything. Not sure about an adult since im new to BP's. I hope what ive said helps you out a little, Im new to Bps and the forum, but i still like to try and help :D

Well you said you live in an area with high humidity. My humidity in my room is 45% roughly and the humidity in my tub with newspaper is around 55-65%. Aspen would only give you more humidity which I thought you didn't want.

Yeah. I got my hatchling about a month ago and hes doing great in his enclosure. Hes eating great and really active when im going ot bed and has been active when i get up since ive been getting up for work at five:). But you can always make one with just holes and then add holes as needed. I have one of the like rubbermaid 12 quart tubs. It has a raised rectangle on the top of the container so i used that to judge where to drill or where ot cut for the screen. Id recommend drilling holes in the top. I have about three rows of 8 eight holes going across the raised rectangle of the top on each end of the rectangle. Each hole is about 1/2 in diameter and spaced about 1/2 an inch apart. I know its a little confusing and i apologize for that. But id go with drilling holes. And you can always add more holes if there is condensation or tweek your setup and place the waterbowl in different areas to get the humidty where it should be. I hope im helping you more than confusing you. :P

your not confusing me at all :)! so im just going to drill as many holes as i need to in the tub, and as long as i dont see condensation dripping from the sides the humidity is fine?

sry im asking so many Qs lol. the last thing i want is for him to get RI or some kind of desiese.:)

I drilled holes in the lid not the actual tub. I tried drilling the tub and cracked it:mad: But if you want some holes on the sides of the actual tub i would solder holes into it. But i would always have a hygrometer to make sure the humidty doesnt get out of control and you dont notice. And if you dont have a temp gun id highly recommend it. :D I always read oh its the greatest thing to have with herps and i was just like yeah yeah a thermometer does the same thing but not i bought one from RBI and its great. I can check temps all over in 2 seconds. Its a must.

okay ill get a temp gun for my bday.. i got a 6qt tub and made half of the top screen and the other half with a few holes. its the right size for my 100 gram girl and should work for quite a while. what im going to do is move her from the 20L tank to the 6qt, and then move my leos into the 20L, then move the mice to the 10 gal. :) its perfect :). do you think she will care if i downgrade her from a 20L all the way to a 6qt?

Well i have my 100 gram male in a 12 quart. But i think a 100 gram would like the 6 quart. Ball pythons love to feel safe, and a small space does that for them. Granted too small of space isnt what they want either. But I think the 6quart will be okay for awhile.

okay i moved her into the 6qt.. im going to make this a temporary thing because i want to see what size tub im going to need for my new hatchling.. im probably going to put him into a 15qt because the 6 seems kinda small.. ill put her back into her 20L in a few days. thanks for the help!

No problem. Its nice to help someone out.:D But i think the 12-15 quarts are great for hatchling up to about 250-350 grams. My guy is on a 5 day feeding schedule and is growing like a weed. And im going to buy my guy one of the reptile basics custom cages. They look great, awsome customer service, good prices, and have awsome reviews.

Okay i just had a huge brain blast lol! it took about an hour and im finally done :)

okay, so i moved my leopard gecko into the bps 20L and he is super happy! I moved the Bp into a 15qt tub with the mesh top, and moved the mice breeders into the 10 gallon:):):).

It worked out soo perfectly! i think from now on all of my bps are going in tubs! And this also means i can get my leo a freind! this worked out so perfectly! im so happy! im going to be posting a video on youtube in about 20 mins il post it up!
