Moss hide

Does anyone use a moss hide out when your snake is in shed?

I have one for my Woma, it's just a tupperware container with some sphagum (sp?) moss on the bottom. I keep my ball python's in a rack and that does a good enough job keeping the humidity where I want it that a humid hide is no necessary for them.

Was there something else specific you wanted to know about humid hides?

Yep. I use six-quart containers with a hole cut in the side and damp fake moss. The snakes go in when they're in shed (or need higher humidity). I haven't had any shedding problems doing it this way.

Thank you all for the info. Can you guys hook me up with some pics so I can see what it looks like? This is going to be my second shed and the first one was not so successful, so I would like to make this one a successful shed. She's currently hiding all day all night long, sometimes I even have to touch her to make sure she is still alive :) Her temps are 90-92 warm end, 78-81 cold, and humidity is between 60-73.

I used a 2" hole saw to make this hide. You can also cut the boxes with a dremmel and cut off wheel. Or if you don't have one, a sharp box cutter usually works, just be careful! For my bigger animals I made "custom" holes with a dremmel. Believe it or not my 2500g girl wedges herself in one and they also make good egg laying boxes. I have used sphagnum moss (NOT sphagnum peat moss), beaked moss and just plain old forest bedding (compressed coco bedding). Paper towels work too but you have to re-wet them more. Also, I keep humid hides in with all my BPs all the time where as you might just want to use them when they start their shed cycle, up to you.

They like to wedge themselves between the hide and top of the rack so be careful opening the drawers.

I'm at work right now, but I'll try to remember to post pics tonight.

I just use scissors and cut a U-shaped hole, making sure to not go all the way to the bottom (so the moss stays inside). Whenever it gets dry, I just pour more water in, and the moss soaks it all up. I haven't had problems with mold yet, either. Yay!

I don't use them, but if I had troubles with humidity then I would.

Heat dries out the humid hide faster, and it can increase the overall humidity of the tub to a higher level than it should be. If you do heat it and don't have problems with these, then go for it.

Not directly. Our rack has belly heat so some times they move the hide over the heat. I do put the hide on the warmer end of the tub though but not necessarily over the heat. Also, when they start a shed cycle I make sure the moss is damp but won't drip when squeezed. After they shed I usually let it dry out till the next shed cycle.
