If you had 10K to spend
If you were starting with Ball Pythons, and had 10K in cash, and another 5-10K in trade stuff, what would you get and why?

If it were me with the prices the way they are I'd get me as many double and triple combo females I could get my hands on and have a male of each one.. But thats just me.

Re: If you had 10K to spend
If I had 10k in spare cash... only about $1000 of it would go toward herp. I would get a carpet python and another ball python and stackable cages for each.

Re: If you had 10K to spend
I should probably note that i have about 40 empty CB 70 drawers in ARS racks. I also have one of the most comprehensive Carpet python collections in the country including almost every morph known at this time. (thus the additional 5-10K in trade)

A visual male lavender albino and a two-year old female cinnamon.

Re: If you had 10K to spend
I would get a lot of triple/double co-dominant or recessive animals with some of the nicer basic morphs like Lesser, Mojave, Pastel, Cinny/Black Pastel, Albino, Hypo, Spider, Pinstripe or even Pied. Then I would get one or two more expensive animals that would add expense to the collection, which all depends on you.
CB-70 racks won't hold hatchlings too well, but would work well for breeders. I don't know if you want to try to buy adults or younger animals.

Re: If you had 10K to spend
I would first buy a freezer and tons of frozen rats, then buy a bunch of racks, thermostats, and supplies, then i would stock up on as many breeder females and co-dom males as possible. That is saying i am going to just start up

Re: If you had 10K to spend
If I has 10 k to spend on ball pythons I wouldnt. Id buy a nice pair of pieds, because I think they are the most visually appealing morph. Id take my other 8k and invest it in something totally unrelated to balls.

Re: If you had 10K to spend
It depends.. am I trying to make money, or am I chasing a particular set of genes in an animal?

The former, I'd invest in dozens of up-to-weight reduced pattern normal females, and a handful of triple dom/co-dom males. I'd also pick up some pastel females.

The latter, well I'd have to do serious thinking. I'd probably pick one or two big projects to chase, one of which would probably a lav albino super cinnamon(or black pastel). I'd probably also pick up a butter and a hidden gene woma. I'd also consider an enchi and a regular woma. If the woma and hidden-gene womas are in fact not the same morph, I'd be seriously interested in chasing a snake that carries multiple reduced-pattern morphs. Just imagine an enchi-woma-hidden gene woma combo, might be pretty sweet.

Re: If you had 10K to spend
I don't post often but I really like this thread. I would get:
    0.1 Pastel(best money can buy)
    1.0 Fire(Again best I can find)
    0.1 Desert(nicest I can get)
    1.0 Enchi(nice high yellow one)

Then I would breed the Pastel to the fire, and the enchi to the desert. Then depending on odds, say I get a male firefly, I would then get female Vanilla. If the Tiger is a male, then I would get a female spotnose. Or vice versa. Then when I hit the odds on a tiger spot nose and a vanilla fire fly, I will breed them together(hopefully I get a male and a female first try) Then I will shoot for my dream 6 combo morph snake. All the lighter coloured normal'er' looking morphs in one snake. I believe this would be the sweetest snake as I really like the lighter coloured morphs that don't stray to much from that of a normal ball python. Don't get me wrong I love lessers, clowns, LA's, Lucy's, and all the morphs I guess, but I particularly like the ones who look more like a normal ball python(as you can see from my list of chosen snakes) The rest of the money will go towards supplies(T-Stats, cages, maybe racks, and a rat breeding colony)

Re: If you had 10K to spend
What I would get definitely has to do with herping.

I'd get a Nikon F5 and Nikon D700 or D3 - both full frame cameras, one film, one digital. Get the 14-24mm lense, a 35mm, 50mm, 105mm macro, and telephoto lense (with or without zoom, probably without). A nice tripod, flash, camera bag, and other goodies to go with that.

I'd take it out into the field and start shooting! Oh, maybe a pic or two of ball pythons...

Re: If you had 10K to spend
I would try to pick up as many of the following males as possible:

    Pastel Sugar / Calico
    Firefly
    Desert
    Lesser Pastel
    Clown
    Pied
    Genetic Stripe
    Lavender Albino
    Lemon Blast
    Pastel YellowBelly
    Axanthic
    HumbleBee
    SilverStreak
    Champagne

And as many Breedable CBB Normal Females as possible.

After your first year breeding, you could hold back what you want to keep, and sell or trade the other offspring and pick up the following females:

    Black Pastel / Cinnamon
    Fire
    Pinstripe
    SuperPastel
    Pastel
    Spider
    Mojo / Lesser / Butter
    Woma
    Enchi
    Pastel YellowBelly
    YellowBelly

As well as picking up as many females of the following Morphs, or CoDom females that are het for the following:
(With papers from a trusted breeder.)

    Axanthic
    Hypo / Ghost
    Albino
    Clown
    Genetic Stripe
    Pied

You may be better off selling the Carpets first, and using that cash to purchase the females from the same breeder(s) when you purchase the males.
The more cash you have available to spend in one lump some with a breeder, the better the prices on all of the animals are.
A breeder is a lot more willing to haggle over a $15k-$20k purchase then a $2500. purchase.

Re: If you had 10K to spend
I take it you are wanting to breed. I would go for super co-doms, visual recessives, and combo morphs as close to breeding age as possible. Bees, BELs, super pastels, oh and 100% hets for other morphs if possible for alot of these male/female pairs of co-dom morphs. Alot faster return with the highest percentage of visual morphs and combo morphs from breeding right off the bat.

Re: If you had 10K to spend
I would go with codom and codom het simple recessive females and a few simple recessive males to breed them to. I do not like to produce normals, so that would solve that problems. Combos are where it is at, and simple recessive / codom combos should hold their value longer than codom combos.

Re: If you had 10K to spend
Since the racks are covered Ill stick with the snakes. A triple gene male (spinnerblast or queenbee), a couple yearling pastel females, and some 09 double gene females and single gene recessive females.

Re: If you had 10K to spend
    0.1 adult pastel
    0.2 adult cinnamons
    0.2 adult het pieds
    0.5 adult normals

    1.0 Pewter
    1.0 Pied
    1.0 Lav albino

Produce a clutch of pastel x pewter, 1 clutch of pied x het pied, 1 clutch of lav albino x het pied, 2 clutches of lav albino x cinnamons, and a few clutches each with the normals. Hold back a female pewter or two, a few het pied females, a few het lavendar albino poss het pied females, cinnies het lav albino, and some poss het lav albino females.

In a few years you could be producing lavendar pieds, cinnamon lavendars, maybe even super cinny lavendars...

That is, of course, if you're looking to get money out of your investment, I mean, and not just wanting to produce something in particular for your own enjoyment.

Load me up with as many breedable sized nice pastel females. And maybe one male bee, could mix those into what I have now and be just fine with what the future could hold for me!

Also sign me up for a het tri stripe male just cuz its something new that very few are working with so far.

Re: If you had 10K to spend
If you had no experience with snakes, and where just a "investor" looking to make some profit, I'd tell ya to stick the money in a safe and walk away. Since you've been keeping snakes before, and know a little bit of the breeding scene, you know what to expect for the most part. I think the real question is how soon do you want to start getting hatchlings? You're going to pay alot extra for a girl that is ready to go this year (I'm sure you know this). I'd get some good, yearling hets, and codom hets (spider het albino) or something along those lines. Pick out morphs you like though....

This has got to be the best answer yet.

I am going to TRY to outdo it tho....

I personally would head to Daytona... around 2:00pm on SUNDAY... with the full 10k in cash... (preferably in $10 dollar bills). For the last two hours or so before the end of the show I would be on top of the world. The memories from those two hours would be as good as what I end up with physically.

An ARS Rack in every size. A number of great Ball Pythons het for something and not het at all. A couple carpet pythons. A couple retics and burms. A couple Woma's. A Green Tree Python. A couple Blood Pythons. A Tegu. A number of Leopard Geckos and Fat Tailed Geckos. A large incubator. more space in my house. A couple Boa's. A couple Hognose Snakes. Lots of feeders. Some good strong snake hooks. A good, large cage for the burms and retics when they get older. A couple Helix DBS-1000's fro the racks and cages. A scale (for the small snakes, and one of those scales that you see at the vet to measure dogs for the burms and retics). A lot of books (for reptiles like: "The Complete Ball Python", "Ball Pythons in Captivity", "History, Natural History, Care & Breeding by Dave and Tracy Barker" and "Understanding Reptile Parasites 2nd Edition by Dr. Roger Klingenburg"). And some videos and posters (for reptiles like: The "Along Came a Spider" poster from NERD and "Dr. Seward's Ball Python Breeding DVD", you can never learn enough). Lots of stuff that I would get.

If I had 10k to spend, I'd replace all my racks and probably buy a few more. Make sure I had several baby racks and invest in a larger incubator. Lets see if I replace 3 racks, that about 1k. Then I would probably buy another 1k in racks, giving me another 11 tubs. So that leaves me with 8k. (this is fun!)
