water for snakes
I have to leave town for about a week to deal with an emergency situation. I was wondering if someone had an easy practical way to keep water in my snakes bowls as I'm unable to make arrangments for boarding.
I have 2 bp's in sterilite containers and was wondering if some sort of system like the cat water dishes that you invert a 2 litre bottle with water would work

Well I know they sell those bottles that contain water and flow into water bowls, my bro has one for his beardier. check your local pet store.

Re: water for snakes
I really wouldnt worry to much, since it is going to only be a week the snakes should be fine. If anything i would just have a friend maybe come over 3 or 4 days after you leave and check/change water if you are really worried about it. But as long as the snake doesnt knock the bowl over you should be all set!

Re: water for snakes
I've used the inverted two liter cat bowl thing before, and it works great...unless you have a big female who likes to knock it over. Silly girl. Other than that, it was great!

Re: water for snakes
I only change the water once a week normally. Unless you're using tiny water bowls, they should be fine.

Re: water for snakes
worst comes to worst they can go a week with out water with no prob.

Re: water for snakes
I agree, use one of those inverted pet bowl things or a bigger bowl. Even people who have the best intentions of caring for your pets while you are away make mistakes. Sometimes those mistakes are very costly I.M.E.
I won't get into details, but I had a few instances where I went on vacation when I was younger and neighbors ended up caring for pets. Long story short, there were a lot of dead fish and my rat snake went missing. None of it was intentional by a longshot, but "accidents" happen.

What???? You should be cleaning your snakes dish and giving it fresh new water every day... how would you like to drink the same bottle of water for an entire week?
edit: sorry didn't know this thread was so old.

I will often grab a bottle of water thats been sitting on my desk for a day or more and drink it. Its fine. Water has no sugar in it so nothing grows too rapid in except for algae and that doesn't thrive without sunlight. If you clean the water bowl well and give fresh water once a week you will be fine. Every day is overkill in my opinion. I really hate the whole in the wild argument but....in the wild BP's don't have access to fresh water every day and when they do the definition of fresh is water that other animals use as a toilet.

Re: water for snakes
yea seriously. a week without water will be nothing, theyre not dogs. they could live for months without water and be fine, dont wirry about it, just fill em up.

I sincerely doubt ball pythons can live for months without water. They are not a desert species.

If it would last me for an entire week, sure. As it is, I've drank from the same bottle of water multiple days in a row, it's not that big of a deal. As someone else mentioned, there's not always fresh water available in the wild. I would expect that since they drink readily from water bowls on instinct, the chances are pretty good that they tend to drink from standing water in the wild. On top of that, city water has chlorine and other chemicals added to it to keep the bacteria and whatever else you may worry about growing in the water away for a bit. The biggest thing you need to worry about is making sure the size of the bowl is big enough. As the water and chlorine evaporates, it WILL leave behind other chemicals and minerals that will leave the water less enticing. I haven't heard it too much with balls, but bloods are notorious about being picky when it comes to the water they drink.
As far as comparing what humans and snakes like goes, would you like to eat a live rat? That doesn't mean you shouldn't feed your snake one. :P

Sorry I guess I just treat my snake the way I would like to be treated. I drink fresh water and eat fresh food, so he does also.
