Wow I pretty much just infected my computer.
Last night I was going to get on the computer, when all of a sudden this program called "Personal Antivirus" popped up and said to downoad it because I could have tons of viruses that have infected my computer. Stupidly, I downloaded it. It scanned the computer for viruses, and it said I had 60. So, I was SO CLOSE to upgrading it to get rid of the so called "viruses" on my computer. Luckily, my friend whose dad works on computers said I actually downloaded spyware. So he told me about this CCleaner website which cleaned unused files out of my computer and my computer runs faster now. Sadly, Personal Antivirus did not go away. I even clicked "uninstall" and the spyware did not go away. So I was looking up how to get rid of Personal Antivirus and I was said to download a program called Spyware Doctor and it actually blocked some spyware. I have to register to get rid of it, but I don't want to take any chances just in case.
If Personal Antivirus EVER pops up randomly on your computer, DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT! It's a pain to get rid of. And the bad part is that the spyware steals files and passwords and things such as that.

What did you use to remove it? I don't really want to register for anything.

I can drive my sisters nuts with my sarcasm.
Still, though, I'm sure a frighteningly large percentage of folks with a virus got it from porn.

Re: Wow I pretty much just infected my computer.
Do yourself a favor and download AVAST.
Back that up with Spybot Search and Destroy.
It's free, it works, and it won't give you tasteless sexual commentary like Dutchherp.

Re: Wow I pretty much just infected my computer.
Spybot should do the job.

Re: Wow I pretty much just infected my computer.
That's why you never click on any popups or browse any that have popups. Fixing computers is easy and quick money. A lot of people should be glad because XP fixed for the most part the issue with some popups automatically installing crap on your computer.
If you want a free antivirus, go get AVG, or you can just do a weekly scan at security.symantec.com

I got a pop up here at work about 2 months ago about upgrading my virus protection. I kept closing it and ignoring it, but it kept popping up. I finally called my IT guys and asked if it was a Radiant (my company) program that I needed to allow to run (it wasn't).
They said that most of the viruses that they are seeing these days comes from Facebook apps. You know the ones - the quizzes, etc.

Re: Wow I pretty much just infected my computer.
Download and run HijackThis. You will need to look close and remove any programs that are not legit. Then install ZoneAlarm Antivirus. ZoneAlarm works great but cost around $20 per year. You could also go with AVG Antivirus. It is one of the best free antiviruses out there, but not as good as ZoneAlarm.

Spybot is changing .. in the industry as more of a preventative tol than removal tool. Their resident protection is good ... and saves us around here (the company I work for as an IT tech) a lot of heaches, but we have run into a lot of stuff that Malwarebytes just destroys the first time that Spybot will not.

Re: Wow I pretty much just infected my computer.
Do you think spyware would actually let you uninstall it? Nope, you gotta go mideval on it. Avast! is pretty good at removing that stuff and it's free.

Great fix! Any no, a mac holds its value way better than a PC

Re: Wow I pretty much just infected my computer.
I have a Macbook Pro 3 years old.
Never had any problems.
Never have to buy/download additional anti-virus/spyware software.
You get what you pay for. :)

I have an HP tablet 3 year old and have never had any virus/spyware problems. I have had virus protection in the past, but I don't really see why that's a negative.
The best and cheapest solution is to not download things that are obvious malware, but that's not 100% so yeah you can spend 10 minutes, one time, to install antivirus software. That's a lot less time than it would take to pick out a new mac.
But if you're really concerned, you can download Ubuntu, and that's free!

Fair enough. Not everyone is for a MAC. :)
I'm just saying from personal experience. I have owned BOTH a PC and a MAC, and I will never go back to a PC.
