omg!..people eating boa constictors on tv!!!!
was just watching bizare foods on the food network...Andrew zimmern was in nicaragua at this restaurant that serves boa constrictors where you get to look into the cages and pick your very own live boa for consumption. he was holding this beautiful adult boa that are farm raised for the restaurant industry. It was then bbq'd with garlic and pepper. Andrew thought it was stringy and bony, tasted like reptile, but was verry good. but the house specialty was bull ball soup...
As a snake lover..I just could not imagine!!! would have taken in that beauty in a heartbeat!!! what a waste!..I was so digusted!
wonder how long before floridians have burmese python on the menu ...

Re: omg!..people eating boa constictors on tv!!!!
yeah i saw him take a shot of still beating cobra heart!!!!!!
sick man he is, but the people gotta eat and if thats their culture what can we do about it?

Re: omg!..people eating boa constictors on tv!!!!
I think most of my family tries to make me mad when they say, "Oh I've eaten Rattlesnake and Alligator." Doesn't make me mad, but more like ashamed because it's a waste of a good animal. Still don't like the fact that people wear real reptile skin hides and also buy heads or statues of a reptile that once lived.

Re: omg!..people eating boa constictors on tv!!!!
They're a food source there just like Cows are here, and rabbits, squirrels, geese, and depending on what part of the country, Gator.
It may be "shocking" to you, but it's business as usual there.

It is actually healthy to eat snakes and gators because they all carnivores and have a lot of protein which we need. Though, it is sad.

Re: omg!..people eating boa constictors on tv!!!!
I love rattlesnake. I could live off that stuff. I was stationed at NAS Fort Worth texas for my last year in the Marines and one of my friends invited me over for a BBQ.
One of the items on the table was a big salad. It was your standard salad with all the greens and some kind of meat scattered all over the top.
I inquired as to what it was and his reply was "Thats the rattle Snake i cought in the back yard last night"
He grilled it and chopped it up for the salad. And it was Good.

Re: omg!..people eating boa constictors on tv!!!!
The thing to remember is that these people have spent years eating things like snakes, lizards and even bugs. While we find it disturbing its good to understand that its merely part of the culture. There are cultures that eat dog and cat and horse while disturbing its just part of their country. We eat things here that other concider scarate think of the Hindu people that have to pass Mc'Donalds or Burger kings. We kill rats by the thousands every year and there are places in Inda that killing a rat is against the law..
Its all relative.

Re: omg!..people eating boa constictors on tv!!!!
i dont see it as wasteful or any of that, now the FL burm hunt is wasteful...
i like rattlesnake, gator and turtle they taste good and are very good for you.

Re: omg!..people eating boa constictors on tv!!!!
Honestly don't see the problem with it. The snake didn't go to waste, and that is all that counts. If I ever saw something like that on a menu, I would certainly try it at least once.
In regards to the python hunt in South Florida, I wish they would let the local restaurants cook em up. At least then they wouldn't go to waste.
Think about it.
There are lots of people with fish tanks that love to eat fish.
There are lots of people who have pet pigs that love to eat pork
There are lots of people who have pet lizards that love to eat gator tail.
There are lots of people with pet birds that love to eat chicken.
There are lots of people with pet turtles that still love turtle soup.
Why should snakes be any different?

Agreed.
I LOVE crocodilians.. VERY tasty, and american alligators are quite abundant. I've had farm-raised saltwater croc, every bit as tasty too. I've never eaten snake, I've heard it's not as good as some other reptile dishes. I've never had turtle soup either but that's supposed to be FAN-TAS-TIC.
No animal is off my menu because I think they're cute or I keep them as pets.

Re: omg!..people eating boa constictors on tv!!!!
... ive had mako shark... and i think ive had alligator when i was really young but i dont remember. I do remember seeing it on a menu some where though... And i thought frog legs was a weird food too... I guess people have to eat what there is to eat.....
And, saying that turtle soup and alligator is really good for you, ??? its not any better for you then any other type of meat....

Re: omg!..people eating boa constictors on tv!!!!
Don't have a problem with it. They have been doing to for centuries so who are we to judge. As other cultures adopting this cuisine I am also all for. I wouldnt mind trying some reptile meat. As long s they stay away from my animals I don't care. :gj:

There is a huge difference between red meats, bird meat, fish... Reptile meat is closest to bird.

I believe he was saying it is wastefull because the dead snakes are just being disposed of... not used for anything... Could be wrong on this tho...

Re: omg!..people eating boa constictors on tv!!!!
I heard gator was very tasty, and would definately try it. I'm on board with what Mike C. said. I used to raise Lionhead rabbits. But, I had a friend I worked with who made the most AWESOME rabbit stew.(not from my rabbits - fryers) Once I tried, it, I loved it. Better than chicken. Some people at the job thought I was wierd. It's not the first time I've heard that, and I'm sure it certainly won't be the last. ;)

That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard all week. There are different kinds of proteins, and meat is no where near 100% protein, anyway. Even in the red meat group, venison and buffalo are way healthier for you than beef, and Kobe beef is even less healthy, if you agree that cholesterol and saturated animal fats are unhealthy, and lean meat and unsaturated fats are beneficial in moderation.
It's the same with every meat category. Halibut has less fat than trout. Trout has less fat than Salmon. Salmon has a lot of Omega 3 and other fatty acids, where catfish has a lot less, etc. Duck it way fattier than chicken, etc.
All meat is definitely not even close to being the same. Imagine if there were a set of triplets, and one lived off of nothing but vegetables and Mahi Mahi for three meals a day, the next one lived off of nothing but vegetables and ribeye steaks for three meals a day, and the last one lived off of nothing but vegetables and bacon for three meals a day. They would quickly have extremely different physiques and health within a month of those diets.

Re: omg!..people eating boa constictors on tv!!!!
I do not have a problem with it as long as it is for food. I personally could not stand in from of a tank and pick out my next meal. I can not even do that with lobster or crab but if the place is serving lobster tail or crab legs I am in. I can't stand when an animal is killed in a senseless act.

Re: omg!..people eating boa constictors on tv!!!!
Though i dont find any problems with people eating reptiles, (as long as they dont waste it), i do think it is messed up in gator, when they put on a gator show... Talking about how much they love gators, and then after the show, they are like "Remember folks, dont forget to hit the snack bar to get you some Fried Gator!"....

Re: omg!..people eating boa constictors on tv!!!!
