    Sad story :(
My roommate just called me and told me something really awful.

Apparently her friends roommate has a ball python and is keeping it in an aquarium like you would an aquatic turtle.

Yes. It is in a tank full of water and a small floating island with a light bulb shining in its face...

    I thought I heard everything.

I told her to give this person my email or phone number in hopes that this person will contact me so I can help the snake out. :( poor little snake..

I don't want to yell at them. I am sure they aren't doing it on purpose. Some people just don't understand that animals have different needs.

Apparently this person really loves the snake and I honestly want to help the snake to have a better life.

It just is so amazing that someone thought this was a good idea without consulting ANYTHING or ANYONE before so.

Just deep enough that he will be able to swim up to get some air every once in a while.. Ball pythons spend the majority of their life submerged...:rolleye2:

Without research, and watching pythons on tv, this person probably thought hrmmmm, i always see them slithering at a waters edge, etc etc blah blah ...no excuse whatsoever for this husbandry but it doesnt suprise me. People can do some silly things both intentionally and unintentionally. Time to educate.....one of what I think our responsibilities as reptile enthusiasts is.

to often experts or people with knowledge rather bash, attack, show people who arent educated how ignorant they are and all the stupid mistakes they made..........instead when an action is unintentional no matter how silly, unbelievable it may be, education should come first without judgement. You never know you may have someone who truely loves reptiles and may grow into a great herper?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

A good example would be my ignorance when I got married, I was told by all listen and do whatever she says!!!!!!!! I started like that but soon realized I still can do whatever I want and have yet to lose half of what we own lol:)

    ps....that was a joke........

I feel sorry for this poor ball. However I would go buy a good book and give it to this person, or print out some care sheets from good sources and tell them about this web site, so they can learn the best way. I have found that newbies want to do the right thing but there is a LOT of misinformation out there. Go talk to them, be nice and they will listen :)

A new morph... the Sea Ball

Does it eat goldfish, frogs, or aquatic mice?

This is truly sad and I hope not true, but if it is, they probably bought it off CL where it was mis- identified as a baby anaconda...:tears:

    it would eat sea kittens.

(anyone knowing/hating PETA will get the reference).

Going back to the original topic, i HOPE you can speak to the owner and get that poor snake back into an environment it SHOULD be in.

Yeah, along with all the documentaries where you see anacondas and such swimming and laying in the water. It does sound more like the person was just misinformed and didn't take the time to research the care, rather than being intentionally malicious. It still definitely isn't good for the snake's well being AT ALL and hearing things like this always makes me want to bang my head against the table, but hopefully you'll be able to help in some way. Poor thing is probably stressed out to no end curled up on its little island :(

But yes, I agree that education is the best way to try and prevent incidents like this. Being polite and courteous while pointing out the facts goes a long way, and I have a feeling that this person will probably change husbandry methods once they realize their mistake. After all, they went to the trouble of filling up the tank with water when they could have just thrown it into a bare tank

Anyway, I'm glad you found out about it and I hope the snake isn't suffering too badly (and hopefully not for much longer!!)

That is really irresponsible! If someone is not willing to put in the time do do a bit of research so that the animal can live it's life as comfortably and safely as possible then I'm sorry but this person should not own any pets. This persons probably got their cat housed in a 10 gallon rubbermaid on paper towels as substrate, UTH, and a water dish. :colbert:

that is rediculous. this is animal cruelty. if i knew their adress i would call aspca. i called them once when i was coming home from school and saw people abusing a bunch of dogs that had bugs all over them eating their skin. the dogs got taken away and cared for.

i really hope that this doesnt continue. let me know when it is solved.

I believe in the Animal Welfare Act, reptiles are not defined as animals, so I dont think you can press animal cruelty charges in this case either :(

Check your local laws--animal cruelty laws do include reptiles in many places. However, the more diplomatic approach is to not resort to this until you inform the person on what they need to do to care for the animal properly. If they fail to make the changes immediately, THEN you report them to the law.

If you do a search on 'animal cruelty reptiles' you will see that reptile cruelty cases are prosecuted. You merely need to find an authority knowledgeable enough to recognize mistreatment.

First you need proof of abuse. Hearsay is not proof and inadmissable in court...

I don't think it's fair to immediately call the aspca if the person acted out of ignorance, thinking they were providing a good home. Assuming that is the case, they should be more than willing to do things the right way. If they don't heed the advice and continue with this kind of husbandry, then you can claim abuse.

Of course, everyone should do research before getting a new type of pet they've never had before, but some people don't know better. Punishing them for ignorance isn't really productive, but teaching them can be. That's why I've been reading up on BPs for more than 2 months now, and I don't have a purchase date in mind. I think I have a good grasp on the basics, so I'm ready when purchase time comes.
