Aspen Temperatures

The people using just aspen as bedding. What do you set your tstat to? i set up mine at 98 at nite (lower A/C) and 96 in day time at the moment. I think thats working, But Im not sure. I would try higher. but i dont wanna hurt any of them...

Do you have a separate temperature gauge for measuring the temps?

Should have two probes in there, one for the t-stat and one for your thermometer. Otherwise its just a guessing game.

ya the tstat probe is taped to the flexwatt heat tape.

The accurite is inside the hide. 91~. But the thing is, they dont use it anymore and outside the hide, it doesnt read the same temps... So I was thinking to get rid of the hides and put more aspen. But I dont know what would be safe temps with just aspen. Tubs Btw.

I want to get the highest temp as posible with aspen and no hides, without burning or injuring them.

The temp probe needs to be taped to the bottom of the enclosure, underneath the substrate so you know the highest temp you are getting in the enclosure. Not sure if you have that currently, couldn't tell by your description. There could be a huge temp variance between the temp on top of the substrate and the temp at the floor of the enclosure, that's where the risk for burns becomes greater.

What would be safe though? 95?

thats what i got... i leave it on 92.

I would say 94* is the max temp anywhere in the tub. Using more aspen will actually make the temp go DOWN. Why do you want to get rid of hides and add more aspen?

Get a temp gun! Greatest $25 bucks I've even spent. No more temp guessing every again! If they're not using the tubs and they are up in the front of the cage they might be a little to warm and they might be trying to cool off...

92-94 is a bit more ideal. 95 is a bit on the warm side. Keep the hides...your BP needs them.

Lots of love for the temp gun.... Gives you peace of mind when you spot check temps inside tubs, surface temp of warmed up f/t meals, temps inside snake carrying case when you're traveling, etc. A thousand and one uses.

I use aspen in an RBI CB70 3-tub rack with a Herpstat t-stat. Inside the tub I use an Acurite plus a small $20 Radio Shack wireless indoor/outdoor thermometer. The Acurite probe snakes around (no pun intended) to the warm side, back of the tub, and usually rests under a thin layer of aspen. The sending unit of the Rad Shack stays on the warm side in the tub, flat against the tub bottom, over the flexwatt. I keep the Rad Shack display unit on a shelf outside of the snake room, in my office. At any time I can look up at the display screen and see what my warm temps are. I've had the best results during the summer setting my Herpstat @ 95.5F which gives me warm temps 91-94F in tubs.

My snake likes to sleep directly on the plastic, moving the aspen out of the way, so my two thermometers tell me maxium warm temps against the plastic, and the temp gun tells me what my temps are on top of the aspen. I've had this setup for more than a year, and it works well for me in my particular situation.

The attached photo shows the Rad Shack sending unit in the back corner with the red arrow, the Acurite unit tie-wrapped at the front of the tub.

Well I do have a temp gun. but it doesnt read temp in the bottom of the tub, because the plastic is reflective.

I dont want to get rid of the hides, but lately my bps are going under the newsprint, under their hides. That is their setup and I was scared they would get burned that way. That is why I was wondering what the highest safe temp was. They dont go in the hides anymore with that setup. I was planing to switch back to aspen and test it out without the hides see if they liked it better.

I did Switch the oldest BP to aspen to test it out, But with the hides still. He is using the hide again, but I guess because he cant find the newsprint to go under it. But still, he is in direct contact with the bottom of the tub, and again, I just realised that I didnt know what the max "safe" temp for a BP was.

I keep mine at 94-95 and they go under the paper all the time. They're doing just fine.
