Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
So I went to input my new spider on iHerp and server seems to be down... that's fie as long as when its up all my information is still there... and if it was on my HD and it crashed that would be much worse but which is better?
I know you get what you pay for but I think iherp has everything but a virtual collection of each animal... LOL but which do you prefer?

Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
I didn't know these things existed, and actually bought a good old-fashioned day planner to keep notes... but I only have 3 snakes, so it's not like I'm keeping track of a whole colony. ;) I'm going to check out those programs, though!
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
Oops... you're right, the iHerp site is down! :(
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
I've been using iHerp and have liked it so far.
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
I made an MS excel spreadsheet for mine, then found out about iHerp but I haven't really looked into it yet. Maybe I'll switch over once I have hatchlings next year
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
For free i dont think it can get much better I made a few suggestions and i was surprised to get a detailed response the next day so seems that the admin there are really into making it better... sucks that its down but a little down time isnt bad aslong as the info is still there... maybe they are up grading or not hip to the current down time i'll give it a 9 out of 10... Definately no reason you should even give it a look... i used it whenj i only had one snake and now i have 5. 6 in my care...

Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
When I first got my anaconda, I kept record of feedings/sheddings and such on a notepad, but I stopped after awhile.
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
I made a excel spreadsheet and printed out a bunch I keep them in a binder and track sheds, weights, waste/cleaning, and feeding. Theyre pretty cool and if anyone wants them just pm me your email and Ill email them to you. Heres what they look like :

Sorry to hijack the thread, just wanted to share my work with the community since were on the subject. =]

Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
I used to use an Excel spreadsheet. I've heard good things about Degei, but it's not Mac compatible.
I use iHerp now. My computer is a laptop so I just carry it in the snake room and enter the information as I go through each snake.
I didn't like iHerp at first, but I've gotten used to it. The one thing I wish I could do is download an animal's into a spreadsheet on my hard drive so it's easier to print.

Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
Hi,
I'm in the process of moving everything over to degei - I used to just write the info on the calendar.
Degei is also free now and I really like the reports feature and the amount of things you can record and track. :gj:

I think you did a great job on that sheet... I may start also doing index cards incase iHerp goes down...
And where did you guys get the iHerp logo or did you just save the image.

Thank you! It's the second version of my first sheet made and I think I nailed it with this one. I sent it to ya, enjoy it. And if anyone else wants a copy to print out, just pm me!

Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
I too use the excel spreed sheet, but I am looking forward to transitioning over to Degei.
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
I use Degei and am very happy with it. Everything you need is in that program. I also used HCS for a while and it is pretty good too. I like having my files stored on my system, and backed up on my drives. Exel spreadsheets are cool, but the Degei program is just so meticulous, and is all there from the getgo.
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
I have used all that are listed but I voted for Degei
I use a spiral notebook and write down each feeding but then go and plug it all into Degei.
I like all the features and amazing amount of information you can post about each animal, track breedings, clutches, ect.
Don't worry about a computer crash... I actually use a free backup program called GFI Backup Home Edition 2009 and backup to an external drive. It is a great free program that you can schedule backups to run automatically when ever you want and has many features that the premium backup software programs offer. I highly recommend it

Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
I also use Degei. At the animal shelter I used to work for we used a program called Chameleon, I LOVED IT. It is quite expensive, and Degei is very, very similar and perfect for smaller, in-home use.
I love that you can print out reports and even cage cards with a brief synopsis for when you go to expos!

Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
I use note cards now, but I may want to try pavlovk1025's spread sheets (hint hint, I'd love a PM with those sheets ). I remember hearing about some programs that stored similar information, but didn't pay much attention. I need to go to bed tonight, but I will definitely check out Degei for the info card print out thing, and maybe give a look at iherp, but I don't like the idea of only being able to store the info online. I want something I can keep on my computer and easily store on a flash drive, print it out, or email all the info to myself. If you can only store it on the servers I is not for me.
Good thread though, def going to check them out tomorrow.

Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
You can print iherp and imma put that into a suggestion... i was just glad to see all my info was still there when the site came back up... I would like degi with the bar code and I think there website needs to be made more user friendly and i havent been back recently but the download instructions were to complicated and all i do is sit at the computer all day... Maybe i was to lazy to read and udate or whatever it said...

The recent instructions are fairly easy for Degei
For a new installation you download each of the install packages
and after you install each package you must open the software and close it before installing the next package not hard but It would be nice to have it all rolled into one package.

Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
Loaded all my info in iherp yesterday...so far so good. Pondering on how long to backtrack or just start fresh.
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
It took me less than 20 minutes to download Degie and all of the updates. (even rebooted the computer after the initial install) and I quite possibly have the slowest, most worthless computer on the face of the earth.
If you think you might like it for the index card printing then you will love it for the hundred other things it can do too. You can print certificates of origin with the blood line on it, track pairing and copulation of snakes, it will give you a report of all breeding sized snakes, you can even track bowel movements with it.
My favorite part of it is that you can add the price of the feeders, and also track the feeders you have in inventory. You can print out statements showing you what certain snakes are costing you per year to feed and care for, and what they are making you from breeding. The bar code feature costs money so I do not really use it, but if I start making enough money off my snakes I deffinately will pay to upgrade to the full version.

Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
I had no idea this stuff was around.
I just use excel spreadsheet to track everything but I am going take a good look at some of these.
Thank you for enlightening me
Cheers! :carouse:

Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
My records are kept on an info sheet I made in MS Word. Easy and simple. :) The sheets are kept in folders on the wall near the cages, like this:

Here's a closeup of one of the sheets:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...Snakesheet.jpg
I've been using this method for a while now and I like it. :) I wouldn't use a computer program because I would forget to enter the info, and I couldn't see the info whenever I wanted to. :D
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
I use iHerp since I only have one snake. It is a great way for me track to everything.
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
Use Microsoft Word.
Or Excel.
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
I use the notes feature on my Iphone.
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
I use Excel because my computer is on 24/7/365 (so it's convenient for me), and I'm not so great at keeping papers organized. Plus, I can easily e-mail someone info on a particular snake if they want it.
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
i use these.
Made it myself :)
fits in a 3 ring binder. I keep all the records for mah snakes in a binder. Super convenient.

I updated his spread sheet a bit and am now using that (I just added ASFs and made a few changes, he can post the updated version if he wants). I find using hard copies a bit easier than computer options.
I use my phone for most of my Internet use now that both our laptops went kaput so I can't use that downloaded one. I may try the web based one if it offers a download data option.
But excel is a great thing, and kinda like that.
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
i personally just use excel. i made a few columns ( date/weight/food/shed/comments ) every time i enter something i start with the date then proceed with the info. if they poo i put #2 under comments. if its food i just write how many of what size eg. 1 med,1 sml ASF.
im always worried about loosing this info so i have a second hard drive on my computer that i just copy and paste to once finished. if my computer ever crashes and i have to reformat my info will still be safe on my other drive.
i also have a hand written copy that i use. its always good to have a hard copy. this is the first place my info gets recorded. i keep it by my side when i tend to my snakes.
works for me and is probably less confusing than i make it sound.
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
I use Degei for record-keeping. I just finished loading most of my collection onto iHerp, but I don't plan to use it for general tracking. I am using it for breeding tracking, mostly for entertainment for anyone watching. The main reason I'm using iHerp is the lineage database. I think that may prove to be a truly important feature for the herp community, so long as iHerp sticks around.

Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
A note for those that have a mac but want to use Degei, you can download a program called Crossover to run it native, or of course run windows through Vmware Fusion or Parallels.
I have used Crossover for those games out there that have stubbornly not been ported to OSX and have had no trouble running them that way. So for a lower end program like Degei it should be perfect.

Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
Hey folks, Ive been gettin a couple PMs interested in the sheet, and I actually had made a thread with a direct download link...here it is:
http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...ad.php?t=98457
This is the 2nd version with euphuistical's modifications. Just download it right from the first post and enjoy, and of course please let me know what you think of it and any suggestions/comments/complaints are welcome!

Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
For those interested, I sent a PM to Aaron from iherp and he has a beta mobile site up at the moment and is looking to expanding it alot by the new year... I love the mobile option as i don't want to have my computer beside me while entering data, or transcribing it then having to input it later...
mobile beta (iherp.mobi/Default.aspx)

Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
we decided once we move the snakes to a snake house in a couple months,we are setting p a computer station for my laptop, and as one is doing feedings soemone else can enter them on iherp, this way if we suffer a comp crash, our info isnt lost at all
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
I use a combination of index cards and an excel spread sheet. It is much easier for me to keep track of things while doing them on the index cards... once done for the day or sometimes the week (slacker), I back up all the data on the excel spread....
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
i use degei but i still dont think its that great as far as layout and deisign but it does what it needs to and thats more important.
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
Can someone please make an iPhone app for this type of thing. I would pay $10 to $20 for an app that can help me keep track of all my animals info and then lets me back it up to my comp.

Really liking iherp!! It's very fast, has an option to batch feed. I group all my breeder females together and can chart feeding all 30 or so with one click of the mouse. Same with my other groups.
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
I just started using iHerp, previously using a spreadsheet. I like it but probably am overlooking some features. I really wanted to use Degei but even after following the instructions for Vista to a T I can't get it to work.Maybe when I upgrade to Windows 7...
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
I write info down on paper while feeding, cleaning etc, then I go enter it into iHerp when I get a moment.
-
Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
A iphone app would rock. but i t hink would be pretty hard to track so many damn snakes on such a small screen
Although with its ability to scan barcodes someone could make it similair to degei? hmmm

They really want and appreciate your input as well guys! If there's something you want that isn't there, let them know and it just might wind up in the next update. And of course, you can always download the free demo and try it out to see if it's what you're looking for.

Re: Degei, iHerp, Index Card, or other???
I see many of you enjoyed vyper, however im sure lots of you are disappointed that it was sold off and now you don't get all those free updates for life, Don't worry because a new software is coming very soon to take over where vyper left off, in just a few short weeks we will need several beta testers for the new software and lots of support, comments, and your great ideas and suggestions.
if you wanna be a tester for this amazing new software then send a email to jcpythons@hotmail.ca and say you be a beta tester. we will then issue you a free copy to selected testers.
Share with us what you would like to see in a software for your herp record tracking (snakes, lizards or amphibians) even if you don't think its possible then try us! just don't expect it to scratch your backside lol.
Cheers!

I have a simple excel document template that I open and save as each month as I go. It's pretty basic: cleaning, food, shed, weight, and notes. But, I back that up on my HDD and a flash drive.
-
From what I understand, Aaron from iherp has everything backed up completely...it's virtually impossible to lose our information even if the server crashes. I'm not a techy person, so I can't give you any other details.
