Who RFID chips there snakes?
I have looked into this as much as I could to find out about chipping my snakes mainly my HETs :)
Does anyone do this? at how big before you can chip them?
Very interested :)

Re: Who RFID chips there snakes?
I looked into it a few years ago.
The cost to do it was rather fair, but how many people would be willing to pay an extra $$ for a chip? And how much would you have to sell to outweigh the cost of buying the Chipper and the Scanner?
I let it lay by the wayside, although I think that it may be worth looking into again.

Re: Who RFID chips there snakes?
chips run around 6 dollars
and a scanner/reader can be built for mere dollars:)
i'm more worried about chipping such a small baby

Its just like giving a shot...
I would suggest going to see a vet to see how it is done/ practice if you were serious about it.

Re: Who RFID chips there snakes?
yeah im not going to start sticking them.
I'm more worried abotu the smallest rfid size i can find. and if a new born ball can handle it? or is it to small?

Re: Who RFID chips there snakes?
My vet offers it for about 25 bucks. That's not much compared with the cost of some of the morphs. I won't be doing it this year, but may look into it next year, or the year after. It's a nice little piece of insurance, it is IS a great thing to offer for hets. I think when you get into double or even triple hets, it would be triply important to chip them. ;D

Re: Who RFID chips there snakes?
I'd never chip a snake for identification of what it was het for....
I would just do like Ralph Davis does, and draw the pattern of the snakes on they're cards for reference.
And that method is FREE:D

I looked online. the chips cost 6 dollars and an injector gun is 30. I can build a simple reader for maybe 30 bucks.
I figure if I get into this, I will be learning the proper methods/safety and doing it myself.
The chip doesn't hurt the animal. all my other pets are chipped.

Re: Who RFID chips there snakes?
Out of curiousity,... why would someone chip a snake? I can understand cats and dogs since they can run away and then be returned,... but how far is a snake going to run?
-
Re: Who RFID chips there snakes?
I think the chips are a GREAT idea for anyone in the states where the Giants are being an issue, e.g. Florida.
Chip the ones causing problems and if found, come back to the negligent owner and let em have it.

A high end breeder with thousands of $$ worth of snakes would in case of thieft. I maybee wrong but I do belive that Bob Clark's first imported male Albino ( and many other snakes ) was stolen and thats how he got some of his colection back.

These are just ID chips, not transmitters so you would have no way of locating them with the chip. The chip would contain information such as the breeder and said morph information. This would be very useful for hets as stated. No risk of getting them mixed up with normals or other hets, no need to worry about buy a snake from someone that has lost paperwork, etc...

Re: Who RFID chips there snakes?
Chipping wouldn't be so bad. I wouldn't really want to do it, but it seems like a good idea because what if your snake gets loose? You won't have to tear up your entire home just to find it. So, chipping would be helpful for that. But other than that, I don't see why someone would want their snake to get chipped.

These small passive RFID tags will not help you locate a snake, only read information from the tag at very close proximity. The only way to track one would be with a larger active RFID tag, a transmitter.

Re: Who RFID chips there snakes?
Chipping is good for the following:
Identification of animals whose paperwork has been lost or is unavailable.
Identification of stolen animals
Identification of found stray animals

No but when you find someone with "your" snake. its a he said she said. even pics are not that reliable. If you scan the other guys snake and your name pops up. your covered
I am more worried about tracking my normal females and my hets than anything

Re: Who RFID chips there snakes?
I like to get all my hets and visible snakes chipped. It wold help with tracking if stolen and sold else were,it make trcking the records easier if you have ot pull out in a hurry ( not got ot worry if you get the snakes mixed upon the hets. ) PLus it will help deter people from stealng if the knowledge is they are chipped and all.
I think that should be a requirement for any snake that can get over a set size escape in a high pop area.It also can be usedfull with permits. snce the chip id code can be placed on the permit ( like a lic number)

Re: Who RFID chips there snakes?
I am not terribly worried about identification, I can take a picture, since patterns vary so much in a lot of snakes, I have considered it more for the theft issue.
I have my dogs chipped for that reason also, My sheltie will run up to anybody and given her unusual color she could be an easy target. Her father was stolen once and given how far away he was found, he couldn't have ran away, we believe the thieves dumped him when they found the tattoo he had. So if people know your snakes are chipped they will be less tempted to steal them.

Re: Who RFID chips there snakes?
I think chips are a great idea with any pet thats big enough to have one. Anything can happen to paper work and photos. The only down fall is that they only work if someone finds and or turns in you pet to be scanned, if its lost or stolen. If its found (or stolen) and they decide to keep it, give it away or sell it you're pretty much s.o.l. Even if its relocated some time down the road and scanned most people give up and or just don't remember to update the info on the chip. Which is why I think there should also be GPS Chips. I know they have collars for cats and dogs but even those can be lost and or removed . These days we can track cars, cell phones, laptops and what not,..why not our pets:confuzd:.

Re: Who RFID chips there snakes?
there is no where near a small enough gps tracker for snakes. plus no way to charge it.

Re: Who RFID chips there snakes?
personally, i'd chip hybrids. i know the hybrid subject is a touchy one, but bare with me. I think chips might help calm a lot of the fear with them. Personally, i LOVE hybrids, but if i ever owned one i would probably get it ID chipped just to make sure that the snake could 100% be identified as WHAT IT WAS and not some "cool (x species) new morph."
i think the idea of chipping hets is cool too.
-
Re: Who RFID chips there snakes?
I'd like to learn more about this too. I can see a lot of benefits from chipping snakes, even normals. Say for example, that a breeder sells some normals, and then someone buys one and tries to turn around and sell it for more money as a het, or for any type of reselling a snake as something it's not. I think if I ever got into breeding and selling snakes, I'd want to do this.

Re: Who RFID chips there snakes?
Chipping hybrids, big snakes, and valuable snakes all makes sense.

Re: Who RFID chips there snakes?
Another free way of keeping track of hets is not mixing them together ;)
