I'm just venting, you don't need to care.
I get home with my Subway sandwhich $5 footlong. I'm ready to dig in, and I get into the first bite. I saw something fall out of it onto the sheet and looked down to find a GNAT crawling around! I immediately spit my bite out (being a germaphobe) and are extremely disgusted with Subway's quality of food. That's it! NEVER AGAIN WILL I EVER EAT AT SUBWAY'S!

If you ever worked in the food service industry you would never eat at a restaurant again. A gnat is the least of your worries...

You got that right, man. I have seen some pretty messed up stuff in places people consider "nice" places to eat.

That's not exactly things you say to a germaphobe...:P No, but seriously, eating a bug is my WORST nightmare. It was a good sandwich, too. :tears:

That's nothing compared to the amount of tiny spiders and such that we all eat while sleeping;) Sorry, I had to!
Like you, I keep spooked really quickly when it comes to my food. The first time I come across something that's not supposed to be there it's all over for me.

It's possible the gnat didn't even come from your sandwich and you're just being paranoid.

Lol totally same here. If I see something "not normal" in my food, I wouldn't be hungry anymore. I'm such a picky eater.. I always check for the expiration date ALWAYS. Lol plus I don't like trying new foods even if they look really good Dx

I ate at a quiznos one time and they forgot to take the plastic casing off of my slices of salami. I'm biting into it and getting these long thin plastic ribbons stuck in my teeth. I called them up and they just laughed saying 'oh yeah, that happens sometimes' Oh well, at least it wasn't a bug.

Especially cereal and other grain products, trust me a gnat is nothing.
Just tear that piece off, feed it to the dog(s) and finish the sandwich, problem solved.
You might not want to get a dart frog either cause the fruit flies never all stay in the tank. I have OCD but trust me after 7 years volunteering in a lab that raises frogs, gnats don't bother me near as much, they become a fact of life. One time I think some escaped from another lab cause we had an invasion of flying red eyed Drosophila that were definitely not from our stock.

gnats and bugs are everywhere. They are actually pretty clean. Don't go seeking them out, but don't be repulsed by them. We feed our herps insects yea (lizard peeps). They are great sources of protein and generally very good for your body. Over come your insect fear and eat it.

LOL. I couldn't count the number of bugs I have eaten, either on accident or on purpose. I guess I am the extreme opposite of a germ-a-phoebe though. I ticked off my wife once while she was making dinner. She said she was going to spit in my food for it. I told her go ahead, I spent six years as a cop, I am sure I ate someones spit in a burger at some point. :)

Now hairs freak me out. I got a hair on a pizza slice once from Dominoes. I never ate at that Dominoes again. I did work in the food industry while I was a kid. I worked at McDonald's and Dairy Queen, and a local restaurant. The Dairy Queen would have us sift through the trash to take any unused katsup packets out and put them back out for reuse. We also had to take out any of the food that was thrown away because the owner of the DQ would use it all to slop his hogs.

The McDonald's I worked at though was super clean I thought. I never once witnessed anything off beat or done wrong. Same with the restaurant I worked at.

I am not really surprised that there was a long hair in a Subway sandwich. They don't wear hairnets at my local one. I worked in a deli, and we had to wear our hairnets, and hats (baseball cap-ytpe) religiously. Sure, they made me look like an old washwoman, but hey, it's sanitary..
Gnats.. would indicate to me.. garbage sitting around.. or unwashed veggies. Or moldy stuff in the back. Not really a good sign. I am not really fond of Subway.. they re-use their knives, etc. from sandwich to sandwich.. a high risk for cross-contamination, if you ask me. But with anything, it's a location-by-location thing for me.

when i worked at rams horn they caught me on camera throwing away an order of fried eggs that i dropped on the floor. when they called me into the office a couple days later to yell at me for it i noticed a 1/4 of a whole ham that the other night cook had thrown in the dumpster the night b4, a couple plates, and silverware sitting on the managers desk. the next night when i got to work i walked into the walk-in and saw sitting on the prep shelf that exact ham that had been thrown in the dumpster waiting to be diced up. i turned around walked threw the main diner yelling everyone get out this place serves food out of the dumpsters and drove home. i lost my job (baisicly quit) but they did get closed down by the health department shortly after that.

Yeah; the world needs more people like you, 771. Kudos to you for standing up to the cheapskates.
My old deli manager expected me to rinse off the turkey breast that I dropped onto the floor, and just wrap it and act like nothing happened. I refused to; she just shrugged, but just the thought.. how many times this happens.. makes me want to raise and grow my own food from the roots up!
These crab cakes that I treated myself to today, are not tasting that great right now.. lol.

I worked at Subway for almost 2 years. I will never eat there unless my manager makes my sandwich. Believe me, if you smelled the food when it's in "The unit", you wouldn't eat there.

As far as the knife thing goes, they're supposed to wash the knife that cuts the sandwich in half after each sandwich. So, if you're worried, you can ask them to wash it and they cannot say no. You can also ask them to change their gloves, get a different piece of bread, meat, cheese, etc. You can ask them alot of things, and most of the sanitary questions they have to say yes to. Yeah, they'll bicker about it when you're gone, but at least you'll feel better about what you're about to eat.

Processed, pressed, or extracted foods are the foods I worry about.

Ketchup for example, could easily have many things ground up into it. Rat infestations are often common in factories as well.

I love the taste of ants, they taste like sweet tarts.

I would be ticked off too I don't care if there are bugs in my food just make sure I cant see em!

I only swear off places that time and time again screw up, other wise I could not eat any where.

Every subway is different. Some are very clean, some are ok, some are dirty. The one by my house, I know the couple who own it, they are very strict and very clean. You also have to understand, a place that keeps food year around will have insects and such in it. It happens and it's impossible for it to not happen. People put their fingers in their mouth, they scratch themselves, people cough on their hands. A lot of the burger kings, mc donalds, wendys, and places like that touch your bread without having gloves on.
