    total ban of genus python
HR2811 (House version of S373) Sponsored by Congressman Kendrick Meek (D-FL), will go to Mark-up (amendment) in a subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday the 28th, and then to the full committee on Wednesday the 29th. This bill has been called the Python BAN. If passed as written, it will BAN the IMPORT, EXPORT and INTERSTATE TRANSPORT of the entire genus python. Once it passes Mark-up it will go to a vote on the floor of the full House of Representatives. Anyone who doesn't believe that this is an immediate threat to the entire Reptile Community has their head in the sand. If the Reptile Nation does not wake up and take massive and decisive action right now we could lose ALL pythons.
USARK has worked hard and spent a lot of money to make sure the Reptile Nation has the best information available regarding the fate of our community. We make our positions clear and operate with complete transparency. We have no conflicts of interest. Our only allegiance is to the Reptile Nation. We are asking you to TAKE ACTION NOW to save this industry. No one else can do this for us. We hold our fate in our own hands. That is why we created USARK, to take control of our own destiny.
We have the best lobbyists, contacts and strategy to address the situation. This is not the time to panic or get angry. It is time for calm deliberate action. We need to engage in a massive phone and fax campaign on Monday the 27th. Get everyone you know to call. Spread the word to every forum and social networking site you frequent.
Phone & Fax Campaign: Monday July 27 (call & fax ALL Congressman at ALL numbers)
    Congressman Kendrick Meek (D-FL),

Punta Gorda: phone 941-575-9101; fax 941-575-9103
    Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL)

Pembroke Pines: phone 954-437-3936; fax 954-437-4776
SCRIPT: My name is...... I want to register a NO on HR2811. If passed as written this bill will destroy thousands of Florida voters, their families and small businesses. There is not a shred of scientific evidence to support banning all of the different species in the genus python. Please amend the bill to address only the IMPORT of the Burmese Python. Thank you for your consideration.

I'll do the call in. I'd fax, but we haven't figured out how to use our fax machine yet. Every bit counts, doesn't it? I just hope that they'll take people outside Florida seriously.

Ill be doing my part without hesitation. Some of you should try and get your significant others to fax letters for you if you don't work around fax machines. I'm in construction so I don't have ready access. Just FYI though, Kinkos and Fedex stores will fax stuff for you if you can't get to a fax machine.

Alright, Guys, let's do this! If it happens in one state, it could happen in any state; an attack on one is - and will always be - an attack on all!

The people who keep trying to pass all these bans are retarded. The ban of a entire genus will not get banned, they would have to really restrict and get detailed about which they're banning, but they're not going to ban the whole python genus. I don't think anybody is that stupid enough, it would really hurt a part of the economy.

Neal just what do you mean , why would a bunch of no-mind politicians care anything in the slightist bit about the genus python. We must fight this all the way the politicians veiwpoint of pythons is the media viewpoint they are not in any way using common sense like you and many others would use from experience of keeping a pet snake. there whole experience of snakes is nothing more than hollywood movies.

dont settle on the banning of ANY species, even burmese pythons. because once you do that...then it will be retics, olives, scrubs, bloods, then the boa side.....

Unfortunatly there are no politicians that have been running since I have been old enough to vote that are vocal either way about their views of keeping reptiles and other exotic animals.. at least none that have been in support of it.

I found out something interesting the other day. I e-mailed my state legislators concerning the python situation down in Florida. I actually got a reply from one of them. He said that he agreed that the ban wasn't the solution and it was an unfortunate knee jerk reaction to the situation.

Of course, in my e-mail I went with the statistics of dog attacks/deaths vs pythons and then switched to the economic benefits that the reptile industry has. If anyone is interested in looking at it and possibly using it to send e-mails, let me know and I'll post it.

If they know that there's breeders in Florida that ship snake out of state then your voice should matter.

That would bring in revenue to the state.

    Hi,

Is it possible to find out who is shopping this around to the politicians?

This kind of flurry of similar proposals all nicely made up ready for signatures and sponsorship takes time and planning.

And it seems unlikely they have had the time to do so since the unfortunate accident with the child and the snake. :weirdface

We know there are people paid to promote intrests and legeslation as USARK made use of one - can we find out if there is someone similar responsible for all these bills or if they came from seperate sources?

Alright, I've been away from this forum a while but still a proud owner of my balls! I have just finished up making my calls, I also sent faxs as well. I also have had about a couple dozen friends spread out the country to call and or fax in. Hopefully this bill will not pass. It really pisses me off that these unresponsible people took on a snake that they had no business with and then released them here in the everglades. Is there a problem? Yes! However not with us responsible ball python owners.

Keep calling and faxing a personal letter with your personal info to every number! Make sure you get every number! Keep going all day if you have to! I was told by one rep that they have recieved more calls on this than any other issue in the house right now! Here are all the numbers. Keep at it. If you get a busy line move to the next one!

Time is critical, so please take the time to contact the following Congresspeople and ask them -- POLITELY -- to send this bill back to be amended to use the scientific names of the specific animals they're seeking to restrict, and not include common housepets along with animals of concern.

    Chair:

    John Conyers, Jr., (D) Michigan, 14th, email: john.conyers@mail.house.gov, phone: 202-225-5126, fax: 202-225-0072
