What do you think about tongue piercings?
I just want to see how many of you think about it. How old do you have to be to get it done? I think I want to get a tongue piercing. I'm 13, turning 14 on November 1st, so am I old enough to get my tongue pierced? And btw for those who do have theirs pierced, how badly does it hurt? Can you describe it?
-
Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
It just depends on how much that "look" is worth to you.
Read up on all the medical risks during and after the procedure.
I almost got it done once, but decided against it due to the large number of problems that can arise.
Instead, I pierced my nipples. :8:
BTW, not telling you to do the same!
-
Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
I'm a professional piercer. Depending on your region and your local shop you need to be either 16 or 18 to get it done.
If you go to a reputable shop there really aren't that many medical risks. You have more major medical risks getting your nipples done such as mastitis.

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
There is a joke about tongue piercings..
I dont think i'm allowed to post it lol
-
Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
I had my tongue pierced for 9 years. Took it out a few months ago.
I would say that it's really not worth it. It can chip your teeth, and having a swollen tongue SUCKS.
You can lessen the tooth damage by wearing acrylic beads, but anyone who uses acrylic can tell you how nasty those beads can get after a while, even with regular cleaning.
-
Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
Also, biting down on a barbell whilst eating is an experience I will NOT miss... D:
-
Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
I'm not doing it because I think it's "cool" or other people are doing it (there's pretty much nobody at my school with tongue piercings), I'm doing it because I like it and I think I would enjoy having it besides the risk of infections and what not. I wouldn't really care much of what other people would think about it if I did have it. Though, I don't think my mom would want me to have it on if we went somewhere nice and things such as that lol.

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
I live in Arizona, so would I be allowed to get it done at my age? Well, I was thinking of doing it on my bday when I turn 14. I can't find any laws on how old I have to be.
-
Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
I know that here it is 18 or with permission. When I was your age, I would have thought it was weird to get that done this young. Now at almost 21, it's all too normal. It seems like you want it for the right reasons, just know what it is that's actually going on, like everyone said, the imediate risks and the "things you wouldnt think about" as well. If it fits who you are, do it. If it's what you want, do it. I think they are nifty; it dosn't affect my impression of someones worth, but don't think others are so nonjudgemental.
****Not condoning doing it without parental permission!!!!**** :colbert:

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
You have to be 18, or have parental consent for piercings, my daughter had her nose pierced when she was 15.
-
Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
My daughter had her's done a few years because she thought it was cool. She was over 18 at the time.
It stayed in her mouth for about 3 months then she removed it. She didn't like the way it was always hitting her teeth, she felt like she could never get it clean enough, and a few other reasons I forget.
Here in Florida you have to be 18 or have parental permission. I did a quick search of the State of Arizona laws and found similar restrictions. Here is a quote from Arizona state law:
"13-3721. Tattoos, brands, scarifications and piercings; minors; anesthesia; exception; defense; violation; classification; definitions
A. It is unlawful for a person:
1. To intentionally brand, scarify, implant, mutilate, tattoo or pierce the body of a person who is under eighteen years of age without the physical presence of the parent or legal guardian of the person requesting the brand, scar, tattoo, implant, mutilation or piercing. . . ."
-
Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
You will not be able to get your tongue pierced at 14. Your parent would have to take you with viable IDs and such.
You need to be 18 to get it done without a parent. Some shops here won't even touch you if your under 16, even with a parent.
I want to get mine done, but I probably won't. I have no fear of piercings on my face or ears, but my tongue worries me with the pain.
It really really takes a lot of care that you really shouldn't have to be burdened with at 14. For a few months you won't be able to eat much other than applesauce and broth, and if it gets infected it won't be fun. I don't recommend you get it at your age, just because your still young and should probably consider it at an older age. Your dentist would not be happy with you or your parents either if you got it done.
I might get my eyebrow sometime soon though. The only facial piercing that looks good on me. Consider getting your nose done or something smaller like that.
Also, getting a tongue piercing may make boys look at you differently, and not in a good way.

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
I'm not even going to all the posts, because i'm almost sure that a lot of these posts have no knowledge to back anything up, I hang out at a local tattoo shop that I know the 2 brothers that own it, I see an average of 10 people a day or so get their tongue pierced.
As far as age goes, 16 & 17 with parents permission(they have to be there), though some shops won't even do 16 & 17 because parents are saying that they're signature was forged and it's bringing up a whole new issue. Once your 18 you can do it yourself legally though.
As far as pain, some people it hurts, some people don't even feel it. I've seen some people almost cry before getting it done, then saying, when are you going to do it? Then comes the reply it's already done. On the other hand i've seen one girl get her tongue pierced didn't hurt her at all, she got up, took 2 steps then passed out face first. I've seen some people that cry about the clamps, and others that say it hurt a little bit.
The downsides to getting your tongue pierced is that a lot of people that do it, run it along the inside of their teeth and after time it will start to chip. Also your tongue sometimes swells up, depending on the person again.
I on the other hand got my nipples pierced, I find it didn't hurt at all. The guy that got his done after me passed out while getting them done. To each it's own. Everybody is different with differnt pain tolerances.
Hope my post helps you decide.
p.s.
Oh and if you're going to get your tongue pierced, do it for yourself, not for somebody else, or for the wrong reasons(because of some guys, not all)

You can eat normal foods within a few days of having your tongue pierced. The swelling (if taken care of properly) usually goes down in under a week and it's fully healed in under 2 months.

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
Sorry, I think it is just gross.

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
I will also add that when I was a single man, it was a TOTAL turnoff to me and my little group of friends. If you had one, we wouldn't talk to you.
Just like any piercing it can periodically become an open wound... causing discharge of blood and other stuff. combine that and a french kiss and you are literally eating whatever disease the chick might have...

To be honest any piercing of the body is stupid in my opinion.

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
I had 40 body piercings on me when I was in highschool I had pretty much anything you could get pierced. My least favorite was my tongue ring. I chipped my teeth so after about a year or two I just took it out.
-
Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
If you want to do it then do it. Nothing wrong with a tongue piercing. Some people might not like them but oh well, if it is you then go for it. My wife got hers done a while back and she was fine after a couple of days. She took it out after a while but wants it done again.
-
Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
My wife had her tounge pierced for 5 years and took it out last summer after chipping her teeth a TON of times and she cracked one of her molars in two spots that needed to have a crown put on it. She is much happier without it and I could care less either way...

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
i had my done 4 times... it doesn't hurt when you first get it... you just feel pressure against your tongue and then it is over....
that night though and several day later sucks.... ice chips will be your best friend! your tongue swells up and it is hard to even say a word or eat....
i had mine done while i was in the military and i was always hiding it
(the rebel in me i guess)
bad experiences.... kissing just sucks....i feel that it just gets in the way- have this bar like object in your mouth....i was eating a breakfast sandwich and my lower ball came off and i got choked on the top ball and bar i was freaking out and finally it came up..... it is easy to chip your teeth with it as well.....it breaks down the strengh of your front teeth and it is easy to get cavaities not to mention having bad breath from food stuck inside and around your bar -so it is a chore to brush your teeth 5 times a day and take it out all the time to clean it out....when i went to the dentist i had to take it out.... and with in 20 minutes of being in the chair mind closed up.... it sucked and where the scar tissue built up it was more painful the second time getting it done.
hope this gives you a little more inside advise if you decide to go through with it.....:weirdface

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
I have a tongue ring, and I do love it. What I dont love is my chipped teeth and the occaisonal biting down on it, when you think you've finally perfected having one.
At first, I could FEEL the tongue ring all the time. My tongue bed (?) was raw from the bottom ball. I had to get use to talking with the stud in my mouth, and for a long time I was constantly playing with it.
Then, several months in when I didnt notice the thing anymore, I bit down on the barbell while eating. It is the WORST pain, and your tooth is extra sensitive for like a week. I thought I chipped it, but I didn't as far as I can tell. I might have split my tooth in half for as badly as it hurt.
So my friend got me a shorter post for Christmas, I've had that for about 2 years now, and it is a lot better going. I honest to god forget I have something in my mouth. A lot of people don't know I have a tongue ring. I talk perfectly with it in, but still, I managed to chip a molar. I dont have dental insurance anymore, and while it doesnt hurt or anything, it is in a prime spot for developing a nasty cavity.
I hate the look of the acrylic ones, so I stick it out with my silver. When I take it out, I will likely just fill in with a flesh colored flat top to keep the hole.
Oh, for getting it, the peirce felt like a hard pinch, but the swelling hurt worse. And the bottom where my tongue sat hurt bad too. I thought I was rubbing it raw.
So, your 14, just wait. I was 19 or 20 when I got mine I think. I like it a lot, but the damn tooth thing really sucks bad.

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
not much people have tongue piercing at my school, they all have lip piercings, my of my friends did it by him self,
-
Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
I have had my tongue pierced for over 6 years, and It did not hurt 1 bit.
I currently have a 4g bar in my tongue, and have not chipped my teeth EVER.
-
Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
I have had my tongue pierced for almost seven years now. I too have never had any problems with it chipping my teeth. It didn't hurt all that bad when I had it done.

It's no joke, there is only one thing that tongue piercings are good for, other than that they are full of problems.

^^^^ the reason I'm always confused when guys get it done.
Speaking of, girls with that done can tend to attract the..wrong kind of guys, so watch out for that, especially at your age.

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
Wow
A little stereotypical arent we?
LOL

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
I had mine done twice for bout 5-6 years, getting it done didnt really hurt to me, it was later that evening that it got sore not so much the piercing but it felt as if my tongue was strained. If you dont talk a whole bunch and keep ice in your mouth the swelling should go down in a day or so, plus after it is done and healed you should get a smaller bar that fits more comfortably. I am in California and here you have to be 18 unless you have a parents permission. I say go for it, its fun but it will get old and you will eventually take it out, I did.
-
Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
I think the only people they really benefit are dentists. I know several people who have spent thousands of dollars getting cracked teeth fixed.

Once a piercing is healed with proper jewellery in it it just won't periodically open.
It's misinformation like this that ruins the business just like myths and misinformation in the reptile world!

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
They are for both guys and girls. ;) Google it. (Or not, if you're under 18 lol)
-
Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
Everything anybody does has downfalls. Like I stated in an earlier post, I have my nipples pierced. They're positive sides as well as negative sides to this.

I don't know that I want to be googleing "guys with tongue piercings"...might be not exactly what I'm looking for

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
I think people shouldn't judge a book by their piercings.
-
Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
Everybody has their own reason for wanting whatever they have pierced pierced. That being said, some guys like having a girl who has her tongue pierced for an undisclosed reason, other guys don't like having a girl having her tongue pierced, and visa verse for girls liking guys having their tongue pierced for an undisclosed reason, and some don't. I personally would prefer a girl with a tongue ring, and I don't have my tongue pierced, never will anyways, don't feel like chipping teeth.

Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
Its better than a tattoo..at least you can take it out.

Are you serious? Maybe you should do some research on this subject before speaking up. ANY piercing will periodically open up and secrete fluid... I don't care if we are talking ears, nose, eyebrow, chin, lip, whatever. A tongue piercing gets more abuse then any other because of the daily activities of talking and eating.
Not to mention it stays warm and moist in your mouth 100% of the time.... lets not forget the constant bio masses being introduced to it (food).

You scare me mike :( lol. I was thinking to get a double tongue piercing during my time off work :rolleye2:. I havent seen anyone with a double, so I been holding back... not sure what It would look like.

I'm not the biggest fan of these... I just don't fully understand the point to them...
BUT, if you want it and it fits you, go for it!!!

What do you do for a living? Cause I've been a professional piercer for the last 10 years and have been working in shops for the last 15! I've had over 27 piercings for the last 8 years and none of them secrete any fluid!
-
Re: What do you think about tongue piercings?
Healed skin shouldn't just randomly open up and secrete fluids. Lord, every scar on my body would be oozing.
The tongue is different, it's a big muscle, and even having the post out for some hours, it begins to heal right away.

Wow, you're only 13? I had no idea! :) Hate to tell you this, but any reputable piercer usually has an age limit of 16 - even with your parent's permission. But that's here in California, so I'm not sure what the laws are elsewhere.
I had mine pierced when I was 20, and it honestly didn't hurt much... plus recovery was quick (1 week), although annoying because you literally can't talk! I had to take it out a year later, due mostly to the problems it was causing with my teeth. I've since had the bottom two worked on, and still haven't repaired the chip it left on the top teeth. So be warned, they are NOT good for dental health... as my dentist said, "tongue/mouth piercings have paid for my son's college education." Think carefully about that before you do anything - you'll probably have to wait a few years anyway.
