Tub humidity

I have a 41qt tub with one 30-40gal UTH, medium sized crock water dish, two hides, etc. It currently has about 250 holes in it for ventilation. A thermometer I have outside the tank says it's 69% humidity. The Accurite inside the tub says 80%. When I add more holes, it goes down for a couple minutes, then creeps back up.

To male things worse, I'm going back to school in a month in Maryland, so I'm not sure if I'll have to change holes again. Any suggestions?

Decrease the size of the water dish in the enclosure if possible. Make sure there are no spills inside the enclosure and just keep up with the hole drilling.

Most people say that housing in tubs is easier. I use a glass aquarium for my enclosure and never have to touch a thing. The only thing I do is when my girl is shedding I put a wet papertowel inside her hides to increase the humidity and change it every other day.

Tubs sound like a lot of trouble to me.

To clarify further, when I first set up the tub sans snake, one row of holes around the sides was sufficient.

Tubs are easier. It takes me a minute to strip the tub and another minute to fully clean it. Plus, when I have to travel 500 miles all the time, it beats having to lift a tank and take up my back seat. I used to use tanks too, but I was always adjusting things to get everything perfect. I live on a lake, so the weather's always changing here.

The only thing I can really think of is to get a low wattage bulb and turn it on to bring your humidity in-line whenever needed. Unfortunately there are many ways to raise humidity, but your options for removing it are limited without adding heat too much heat to the enclosure. turning off your UTH and using a bulb to heat, or lowering your UTH temp and using a low watt bulb to bring up the heat to where it needs to be is about all you can do.

Are you using a tub with the lid? If so try putting holes in the lid. I had the same problem with 1 of my BPs thats in qt right now and after i put holes in the lid the humidity lowered

Already did. About 75 of the 250 holes are in the lid. :(

What is your substrate?

You could get a dehumidifyer for the room.

Gift paper- similar to unprinted newspaper. Dehumidifiers are expensive unfortunately. We have one in our basement and it puts out a lot of heat and noise. And then I can't open my windows. :(

I took advantage of the Target sale on tubs and got a second one. I might redo the holes to be closer together and more flush so I can reseal them if necessary.

Try putting a fan by the tub to get some more air circulation.

I'd still say try a smaller water bowl. When the snake breathes it releases humid air into the tub. Just like we would. So that's why it's more humid with the snake in it. I don't see how with all those holes but it doesn't sound like there is enough airflow. Any pics? Is is really humid in MA now?

But, I made some changes. There are 3 rows of staggered holes about 1" apart around the sides and the lid. I also moved the tub from a corner to right next to a window where there is a channel of air. Granted, the humidity is still high in my area, but it's going down.

Remember that the depth of the water does not matter for humidity issues. Its the surface area of the water touching the air that counts.

Take the water dish and place it on the cool side. This sounds very wrong because I have about 12-15 holes in my tub and my humidity is about 50%. TUBS are definitely easier from what I have gathered to maintain then glass aquariums.

Did you ever try putting a fan near the tub?

Like I said, the water bowl is pretty small to begin with.
It is on the cool side as well, and I've been making sure it doesn't get warm.

Kaorte, I did when it wasn't raining. It helped a little, but it's just been so humid in general. It's around 76-78% but there's really nothing I can do until the rain passes.
