    Should I get these?
OK, so I am starting to breed snakes, YAY!!!

Anyways, I have two mojaves and plan on getting a spider as well. (I also have some normals) but I was wondering if it would be worth it to invest some money in some het pieds. I am going to get one 100% het male and possibly three or four 50% het females (girls are from same clutch) All 09's

Would this be a wise investment? The possible hets are very cheap, right at 1/4 the cost of a 100% het girl and would leave me open for a few more hets maybe.

Go with the pair. A sure thing is always a better bet than a maybe.

Get what you like. You have to clean up its poo for the next 20+ years.

If you like pieds, go for the hets. I personally would get the 4 50%het girls this year. Then next year get a 2010 pied male. All 5 would be ready the same time to breed. Then, you can prove the 50% girls and all the babies would be 100% het.

I have three kids, Cleaning up snake poop for the next 20 years seems relaxing to me. ;)

Looks like I might be too late on the 50% hets anyways. I have another chance at some from someone else so we will see how it all falls I guess.

If I were you, I would buy the possible het females and a visual male. All of the offspring will either be visuals or 100% hets.

I dont think that he/she wants to spend money like that on a visual Eddie, hence the 50% hets. Id just get another co-dom.

Actually, I would like to spend the money on a visual but I have a wife that is keeping me on a budget right now. I have someone offering me a good deal on a female visual right now, I am just trying to talk my wife into it, but I am also trying to hedge my bets if "we" agree that I shouldn't spend the money on one yet.

Right now it looks like a visual will be out of the question.

I would go for the guaranteed hets personally.

Id hate it in 3 years time finding out none of them actually are hets.:(

Same here. If I were not able to get a visual, then I would not work with the simple recessive trait. I do not like the idea of breeding a het to het, or a het to possible het. If the offspring is not visible, you will not know if it is het or not, so will have to price it accordingly. On the other hand, if you breed a visual to a het, then you will have a better chance at producing visuals. All the non-visuals will be het, so you will make a lot more money on them.

Good points. I think I am going to wait till next year when I can afford a visual pied male and some 100% het females.

And with the "pied markers", some people claim to be pretty good at picking out the hets from non-hets.. which if true decreases your chances that those 50%ers prove out if the "most likely to be het" snakes have been held back. Just something to think about.

If the 100% het male is in the same clutch as the 50% het females they would all be 100% het or 50% het. Whoever is telling you different is beyond wrong.

I never said they were from the same clutch, or even the same person for that matter.

I seldom buy hets unles I really believe in the breeder, so make sure these are coming from a reputable breeder.

and I don't think I would ever waste money on a 50 or 66%. unless it was a great deal on something really rare heh.

I am very disappointed in people on here right now. When did this site get to the point where 10 people would vote get lost?

If you want a relatively inexpensive way to do the pied thing find a breeder that has a clutch or two of possible het females. Buy all the females from both clutches. By buying all the females you are actually increasing your odds that a few of them will actually be hets. If you buy individual hets from different breeders then you are strictly playing the odds where as if you buy 5 females from the same clutch then in theory 3 of them should be hets. Grow them possible hets for a year and next year get a visual pied. Buy a extremely low white and save yourself some more money and buy the following breeding season everything should be able to breed for you and you can prove out your possible hets. Todd

The females were all from the same clutch, but the male wa from a different breeder all together.

They are all sold now anyways. I am just going to get a male pied next year and a few 100% het females. That will be my income tax purchase for next year. I consider it a sound investment.
