Learning a british accent?

Im picking it up little by little. As I'm from new jersey, I have learned that to speak politicly correct in every word and to sound like I am very intelligent is the right way. Some people say I sound " posh " and some people say i sound like an auzzie. So is there anyone in the states that has a flawless or novice accent that they picked up on that use BP.Net? & If there are any brits out there on here, What are some things that you can recommend? I have watched almost every youtube vid there is out there on the topic but everyone seems to say everyone else is wrong. I'm going to shut up now as I have probably confused the likes of you all lol. Remember. Im Puerto Rican, From Nj Usa, And ill be turning 17 in aug. Not that it maters I guess. ANYWAY! Any tips or tricks?

Why are you trying to learn a british accent? Its the same language just a different sound.

You could probably ask Madonna to sell you her's. I think she lost squatter's rights to it in her divorce from Guy Ritchie. :)

LOL! I love British accents! I think the only way to really 'learn' an accent is to listen to someone else use an accent over and over and keep trying to repeat it.

Rent the movie "GreenStreet Hooligans". You'll be set.

Wow, that's great that you want to improve the way you sound! I went through the British school system and was raised on "the Queen's English", although I've been here in USA for 20 years and so have lost most of my accent.

Are you going as far as saying "aluminium" (extra syllable in there) instead of "aluminum"? Some words are downright different rather than merely a difference in pronunciation, e.g. I still call it the "boot" of a car <--(pronounced without the "r" sound), and a "rubber" over there is actually an "eraser" over here.

I guess you could try tuning in to BBC.com and keep listening to it. But you really don't need to don a different accent to speak well and sound intelligent. For starters, saying "lie down" instead of "lay down" and using "well" instead of "good" as an adverb are 2 simple things right off the bat that will do wonders. :)

I have a bad habit of speaking with the accents that I hear around me. In particular, when I get mad and yell, I fall into a southern accent. What is up with that? :P

I take it you mean an English accent, seeing as you say it sounds posh? In Britain you can have either an English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish accent. Of course a Northern Irish accent is the best of the bunch :D

Seriously there are a whole slew of english accents which sound totally different to one another.

The one percieved as upper class or post is the recieved pronunciation one.

Compare that to geordie, liverpudlian, birmingham, cockney or essex.

I would say be proud of your own accent and let the education shine through by what you say with it. :gj:

But if you must change it to english make sure you pick the one that doesn't make you sound like a chav. :P
