Okay so my mom has given me permission to get a tattoo. But here's where you guys come in. How does it feel? Where's the least painful place to get it? Also I want it somewhere casual clothing will cover up, for future job hunting. Any pictures of your snake tattoos will be helpful. I want a ball python. Thanks in advance guys.

it feels like a constant scratch with a sharp nail... rather like a cat using you as a scratching post, but only in one spot, over and over.

my biggest concern with getting a tat and placement was, "ok, how's this going to look when i'm naked?" all the crazy ideas went out the window ;)

Yea the out line feels like someone is dragging a nail across a sunburn its not painful (depends on where you get it) but its not like getting kissed by kittens either..

The good part is at some point the skin goes numb and you just feel the movement of the needle(s) and then you can just sit back and relax..

I forget I even have mine you see them so often that after awhile you don't see them anymore, Until your grandmother points them out ;)

I have 36 of them and my advice since you need your Mothers permission is to wait... Tattoos will always be around when you are ready, but if your tastes change (which they do) tattoos are forever. They cost more to remove and its allot more painful. Take your time and dont rush into it.

also, I have never met anyone that has regretted waiting for a tattoo. I am 43 and a biker so I have met allot of people that regret some of the ones they have.

The amount of pain depends on where you get it. Places like the back of the neck and the wrist are the least painful places to get it, really just feels like someone is taking a sharp needle and scraping it across your skin.

Where as someplace like the rip cage for example are going to hurt more. But all in all it really doesn't hurt very bad at all.

I can't wait to get a tattoo of a Ball, I just don't know where to get it.

This is a very good point, i am 28y/o and have 8 rather big tats. but the only one i have that i wish i could go back and would have not gottin is the one i got when i was 17y/o. Dont get a tat when your young because it might be the in thing to do. wait until you find sumthin you really want.

My tattoo guy had the best description of it so far. It's like taking a ball point pen and drawing on a reallllllly bad sunburn. It doesn't hurt too bad at all and if you really want it you can suck it up and take the pain regardless of where you put it.

Some great advice right here. Choose the artwork for your tattoo, if you still like it 6 months to a year later, get it. I have tats on my legs, feet and back all easily concealed if necessary.

I agree that it's not that bad. I also thought it felt a lot like a really bad sunburn that someone keeps poking. I just remember that it felt really hot, I didn't think it felt like needles at all. I have one on my shoulder that had a lot of shading, that one wasn't bad other than with a lot of shading/color they go over the same spot over and over till you're numb. I have one on my hip, that one hardly hurt, fatty places without any bones seem to be the least painful in my opinion. Then I have one on my foot and I would never suggest that. Some people say the foot doesn't hurt, mine hurt like hell. It's the only one I said ouch about and it was awful. I could feel my tendons moving around......just thinking about it...... :tears:

I don't have any snake tats otherwise I'd post pics :D

Re: Everyone who has ever had a tattoo PLEASE read
A lot of places don't hurt, but the rib cage and arm pits do. My artist didn't do any outlines on the ones on my chest, just 16 - 22 mags the whole time, and it wasn't pleasant. But none of the other ones I have hurt at all. I'd compare those to getting scratched on a bad sunburn. Take your time deciding exactly what you will want on you for the rest of your life, then spend a lot of time finding the right artist. You can look at a lot of portfolios online of your local artists, but you should look at at least 20+ portfolios before you decide on the perfect artist who can do the tattoo you want. Don't just walk into the nearest shop and sit down in the first chair that's available. The chances of you getting lucky enough for that artist to be able to do a decent job is very slim, and you will regret it afterwords, once you start to see other peoples work. I found this out after my first tattoo, so for my last two, I spent over a month looking for the best artist possible and set up the appointment months in advance with an artist who lived on the opposite side of the country, who would be in a shop an hour from my house several months down the road. I waited, made the drive, paid $200 an hour, and couldn't be happier with my decisions to do all that. You can start looking at www.inkednation.com, but also spend a few weeks driving around to your local shops and checking out artist portfolios, with no money in your pocket, and no plans to sit in a chair. You have plenty of time to decide exactly what you want and to get it done right, by the best possible artist. There's a good reason why some tattooists have 6 month waiting lists, while most accept walk-ins. Also, like that perfect ball python, don't let money enter into your decision making. A good artist will charge a lot. Good luck.

Well put. You never hear "If only I had gotten that tattoo sooner. Don't do it PythonBreeder. If your Mom has any say in the matter then you are not ready no matter how old you are. Pick out the art, hang it where you can see it, talk to tattoo artists. You have all the time in the world. Waiting to get a tattoo is like having a glass of water at the end of a night of drinking. You don't need to do it. But you will regret it if you don't. If you did not completely understand that analogy then you are too young.

it doesn't hurt nearly as much as you expect it to.

over bony parts (ankle bone SUCKED) the vibration is pretty unpleasant.

when i went to go get my first one, i remember asking the artist, "is this gonna hurt?". so he goes "have you ever burned your hand on a hot iron?". with my horror mounting i replied that i had to which HE replied "well, it's nothing like that.". he then went on to tell me that the sensation is somewhere in between walking barefoot on cotton balls and getting your fingernails ripped out. turns out that was a fairly apt description. it doesn't really hurt, but it doesn't really NOT hurt either, it's a very unique sensation that i think alot of people interpret differently. i personally love it. it's cathartic for me; the feeling of the needle, the buzz of the gun, and the anticipation of the finished product. please do, however, follow the sage advice of others here and don't jump the gun on this thing. a crappy tattoo is as forever as an awesome one.
    good luck,

It depends on where you get it. I have one on my back, and that one wasn't bad at all. More irritating than anything. I have another on the top of my foot, and for me it was probably the most painful experience of my life!! (and I've been in numerous incidents and visited the ER several times)

I also agree about waiting. I got a tatoo the day I turned 18, mostly just to get a atatoo for for the sake of getting one. Its just a generic design, and doesn't mean anything to me. I don't hate it, but if I could do it all over again, i'd not get it.

I get tats only when a major life event happens. The association and symbolism always feels good no matter whether the design holds my interest or not.

a friend of mine gets a tat of a feather with every significant life event. She's got a whole row of them now, and can explain the significance of each one. Their styles and colors are all different.

Well Its not really bad. Every now and then they may hit a tender spot but for the most part it like playing with an extra spunky kitten. lol. For me it tickles. Except on the back side of my arm. Couple tender spots there . But really it's dependant upon you. Some people swear its the worst thing ever and other barely notice it being done.

if you get one on your lower legs or feet, the worst part will be getting out of bed the next morning.....when the blood rushes to your feet and floods all that irritated tissue - yowch!

I've had my rib cage, spine, and lower back tattooed (all pictures in my gallery)
And in MY honest opinion, none of them hurt - but that's only because I personally have a super high pain tolerance
I fell asleep while getting my back and ribs tattooed

First thing's first - do not get a tattoo just because your mom says you can.
It should be something VERY carefully planned out, debated, narrowed down, and waited upon.

Do not worry about the pain, worry about what you want to have displayed on you for the rest of your life. I have quite a few, including most of my right arm sleeved and I plan on getting more. I have one cover up and a flame job I wish I had waited on to get a better one. Think it out well in advance. As far as jobs go, I never had a problem with jobs and tattoos, but most of my adult life has been in the military, the rest was as a police officer, and my tattoos never came up as an issue, but they do for others.

Also I see you are 14 years old. Dude, wait on it (that is if you can even find a shop that will do it). Not saying you are too much a kid, or not responsible enough, but at 14, I would wait. I got my first one at 17 and had it covered up later because I hated it, and now I want it back because I like it again, lol. Your mind wil change over time.

I got my first tattoo at 16, I regret it.

It is a stupid tattoo, a joker with a skull, I thought I liked it. Turns out not so much.

Find you tattoo concept, wait 6 months, find your artist, refine said concept, and finally lay down some ink.

Take your time and remember cheap work is just that. Quality cost money, expect to pay good money.

Build a relationship with your artist and he or she will usually make you a deal with later work.

In your profile it says your 14....

You really have no business getting a tattoo.

I do not mean to sound mean or condescending I just want you to really think about what your getting.

When I was 14 I didn't know what I was going to wear to school, much less what I was going to wear for my life.

dont worry about the pain. you will be too excited for it to affect you much. it doesnt feel good but its not that bad. your arm (where short sleeves cover) is not very tender (except on the inside of the bicep) and that will probably be your best bet. dont worry about the pain...dont be a baby lol

I have one of a dragon that I thought was pretty killer at the time. I still want a dragon where this one is, but I want a bigger, more Oriental dragon there now. Been trying to figure a good cover up for it for a while now with no luck.

Think long and hard on it, or wait a few years, seriously. I love tattoos, and think they are great, but wait till you got the scratch to do it up right and have it COMPLETELY thought out. The whole "wait six months" thing is a great idea after you figure up your design, That is usually when you realize you can add something more cool to it, or tweak it a little bit more.

Alas, I know these words will be in one ear and out the other probably, just like they were with me, but hey, life is a learning game right ;)
