My BP escaped
Does anyone know where pythoins like to hide? I am a new owner and I grought him home today. He escaped and I have torn through the house looking for him. I'm very afraid for his safety.

Re: My BP escaped
look in tight places and where it would be warm, they hide in the places u wouldnt think to looks, they cant fit in small places so look everywhere

Re: My BP escaped
This made me smile I actually had to take my dryer apart about an hour ago to retrieve my baby cinnamon ball that escaped last night.

Re: My BP escaped
also where do u have the cage, is it up stairs or downstairs, if its in a room shut the door, how long ago did u loose it?

Re: My BP escaped
BPs are the masters at hiding when they have escaped from an enclosure. Search every small or large place, and even warm places. BPs like to crunch themselves in small spaces because it makes them feel more secure. They are unlikely to be hidden in a somewhat large area because they won't feel that secure. BPs LOVE it where it's warm, so search every possible warm place. Also, for a start, search the room where the snake escaped because the snake may be still hiding somewhere in there. Close the door to that room so the snake cannot get out, and make sure it cannot slither underneath the door. If there is a space under the door, cover it up tightly with a towel.
Now, I hear in some cases this will work:
If you feed f/t mice/rats, completely thaw out a mouse/rat and stick it in a plastic or paper bag. Next, place the bag in the room where the snake got loose. This should be done at night since these snakes are night hunters and are more active at night. Now, listen for any signs of the bag making noise. If so, you may have just attracted your snake to the bag. I haven't had a snake escape, but I've heard this method has helped quite a few people out.

Re: My BP escaped
oh and i think this is it, place powder on the ground so u can see where it went, i dont remember what kind of powder, someone correct me if im wrong.
-
Re: My BP escaped
I just brought it home today and its only about a foot long. I left the top cracked(I know Stupid!) I didn't have holes drilled yet and had to take the kids somewhere. We were gone for 2 hours. I didn't think he was big enough to get out. He was upstairs in my bedroom, but I have already turned every room upside down looking for him.

Snakes can get through the smallest holes that you wouldn't even think they can fit through, but they do manage to. All snakes are escape artists, finding the smallest holes they can get through, and lifting screen tops when they are not secured. Hope you find the snake soon:please:

Re: My BP escaped
How long will it survive until I find it? I don't even know if the pet shop fed it! They just got them in today.

Snakes can last months without food, especially BPs. The longest a BP went without eating was close to two years. I'm sure you can find your snake pretty soon, just remember-- check EVERY small, tight place and also every warm place because that is where the snake is most likely to be.
-
Re: My BP escaped
can they climb to high places? Will they go downstairs? I have a really big house.
-
Re: My BP escaped
yah they can, just shut ur doors everydoor so u can look in every room throught out ur whole house, look in ur closet and everywhere bed, every draw shoes.

Yeah, the only problem is they cant survive that long with out heating.
-Check warm spots in your house. If you search on google about your problem they have a big list of stuff to do like where to search, like house hold appliances that are warm and stuff like that. Also do the flour thing. Idk if it will work but if it does that would be cool. Im guessing that your snake has found a hiding spot and is going to stay there, not roam the house.

Unfortunately, yes. They are curious snakes, and they will go anywhere they can and check it out. These snakes live mostly on the ground, but they can climb pretty well. BPs also have been known to go down stairs when they escape just because they were found on the first story of the house when their enclosures are on the second story, so it is thought that they will slither down the stairs.

Re: My BP escaped
another thing to do is you can put out a mice or rat, maybe a f/t one, or a live one. make it bleed a little, that'll draw out the snake after a while.
-
Re: My BP escaped
what ive heard to do is drag whatever you feed it along the baseboards of your walls (it will likely slither along those rather than the middle of the floor) and place the food inside of a hide. if it goes after the food and eats, its going to want to chill in the hide to digest. and if you can make the hide warm, id do that aswell. goodluck. let us know when you find him.

Re: My BP escaped
Wow, first day and you already lost it... Well, just look inside the drawers of your bedroom, look in the covers, look under the bed inside things. They say they do not usually go farther than 15 ft from the place originally let loose.

Yeah, first day and I have worn myself out looking for the little booger. This was supposed to be a classroom pet for my seventh grade science classroom. I sure hope I can find it. My two teenagers and my wife have worn themselves out as well. thanks for all the replies. I'm hoping my chihuahua doesn't find it and kill it!

Yes it can...
Any snake can survive colder temperatures. That is what these animals are built to withstand in the wild. They can not, however, thrive or digest very well. They can last a good couple months escaped in the home no problem.

Re: My BP escaped
I sure hope it didn't leave the home. It was a good 103 degrees out there and I'm hoping it didn't get out looking for the heat. Man, I want my snake!
-
Re: My BP escaped
I'm sure it will turn up. I've figured out that you can never find something when you're looking for it. As soon as you wear yourself out and stop it turns up lol. Just like that magical disappearing tv remote :D
Just try to keep your spirits up because I know this is probably worrying you a ton. But worrying is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do but it won't get you anywhere. I wish you the best of luck and I'm sure you'll find it very soon when you least expect it ;)

Re: My BP escaped
i'm shutting down for the night. Maybe I'll find it tomorrow. This makes me sick and my wife won't sleep in our room tonight!

Re: My BP escaped
Delilah has escaped twice, and was found in the same room as her cage both times... first time she was squeezed behind the dresser, plastered against the wall & wrapped in wires. Second time she was on TOP of a very tall bookshelf, just comfortably curled in a ball - so yes, they can "climb" rather high. As the others have suggested, look anywhere that is warm and tight, especially near electronic equipment (Toby loves hanging near my laptop and DVR/TV). There's also the flour trick that was mentioned, and you can lay crinkly paper or tin foil around the house... then keep your ears open when it gets dark, since they tend to move around at night. Good luck!!! :weirdface

Might be a good way to find him, though... as long as the dog doesn't have strong hunting instincts. My dog is a herder, so he's always keeping an eye on the snakes & cats - just to make sure they're okay. Actually, he was helping us look the last time Delilah escaped!

Re: My BP escaped
ahah that would be pretty cool, my dog just sniffs everything

Re: My BP escaped
I have the lights off now. I keep raising a flashlight hoping to see it. This is nerve racking! I can't sleep!:taz:

I know, it's a horrible feeling... don't give up, though! :please:
If you haven't found him by tomorrow, go get a live mouse and keep it somewhere central (in a cage) - might tempt him out if/when he's hungry.

Re: My BP escaped
best of luck to you btw its in the place you didnt check :P sorry i just had to say that. just calm down!
-
Re: My BP escaped
It's just a baby! I'll keep the cage locked from now on. Please come out!!! Curse this big, dirty house!

Re: My BP escaped
I've never even fed him. I have no idea where he could be. We have turned all three bedrooms upstairs upside down, the bathrooms, the laundry room(also upstairs), the closets. Tomorrow I'm going to take everything out of the storage room under the stairs. It's really warm in there with the water heater. I'll also have to take the piano apart. My $29 BP is turning into hundreds of dollars of labor in search of......

Re: My BP escaped
Welcome to snake ownership, LOL. I did at least $100 worth of damage to my wall last week, when Mona crawled into a hole under the cabinets... and I'm a renter, dammit.

Re: My BP escaped
I found my snake! Actually, I woke up this morning to, ''Steely, I found the snake!"
My wife had found him when she opened her underwear drawer. She said she opened it and, out he plopped. It was right next to the head of my bed. That just goes to show, he loves me! He just wanted to get closer to me....lol:banana:
Oh, and he must be a male, because he likes my wifes underwear too!;)

Re: My BP escaped
Great!! now secure that tank :)
-
Re: My BP escaped
congrats, see they love draws lol
-
Re: My BP escaped
Tank is secured, snake is in hide, all is good in my world, now. Thanks for all the support from people on the forum!
Oh, BTW, What age is a BP that is 18" long and about 1" diameter at the thickest part of his body?
-
Re: My BP escaped
Congrats on finding him! Mine got out once and I freaked out; I found him underneath my bed just cruising, I don't think he was out for more than 20mins but if I didn't check his hide I never would've known he was gone.
Not too old,but you never can really tell; my guess would be less than 3 months old.
-
Re: My BP escaped
Thanks, do you know know what size pinkies are best for him?
-
Re: My BP escaped
Congrats on finding him, I recently lost my two youngsters luckily I found one tonight in the bathroom so going to set a trap in there later and hopefully the other one will turn up.
How old is your python, mine were born last oct and they are on small adult mice now.
-
Re: My BP escaped
Don't lnow the age, it is 18" long
-
Re: My BP escaped
Good job finding him. I found mine in a dresser drawer as well when she escaped, right next to the bed. Seems to be a favorite escape spot. I think they do it on purpose. Knowing eventually someone will open the drawer, and all the while making you go crazy looking for them. Little buggers.
-
Re: My BP escaped
The funny or not so funny thing is that I dumped all the content of that drawer out and took it out, Twice! I think I may be in for a wild ride with my new classroom pet.
-
Re: My BP escaped
lol im glad you found him! in an intresting place too! and for food, go to petco and get the f/t mouse hoppers... i feed them to my girl and she is about 4 weeks old now. close to the same size as yours.
