Re: size flexwat
It depends if you are using belly heat or back heat. I use 4" flexwatt for belly heat.

Re: size flexwat
3" to 4" for belly heat is what we use for our collection.

I know some people use them and are happy with them however I have heard that an on off type stat will burn out your flexwatt quicker than a helix. There are people on both sides so I would say you are safe with them We use Helix because we like the control it gives and they are high quality

Re: size flexwat
You might as well just go with a herpstat or other proportional t-stat. Only about $30 difference. If you want to save $20 you could go with the johnson and a rheostat for safety incase it fails and to not let the flexwatt ever have full power applied. I've read that helps, though not as much as a proportional t-stat.
The herpstat has, I believe, a failsafe incase of failure. Although I've heard if the temp probe come unplugged it goes to full power. So you may want a rheostat reguardless.

Re: size flexwat
4 in flex will work fine. I have several of the Ranco ETC-111000s that I use and I am very pleased with them.
