You can build it however you like. Mouse or rat rack build is fine. Use 1/4" or else they will get through. You can use Van Ness cat pans. They come in a few different sizes and work well. They will get to the water, no worries. Rats are ingenious little things.

With mice and ASF you must use 1/4" mesh or when they hop up they will get out with ease.

The ones that we built for our africans are the one with the gray tubs we used quarter inch mesh and bus boxes. it works well. I just built a rat block hopper like the one thats on the forum..should work ok.

I had mine in concrete mixing tubs and used a 2x4 under the sipper. If I get back into ASFs I will use the FB/ARS mouse tubs to hold a trio.

I have one like the photo above using the mixing tubs, but for the ASF's I am using 13 x21x6 metal steamer pans. LOL those little suckers are NOT going to get out of my cages if I can help it!!

Where did you get the pans if you mind my asking? I've been hunting online everywhere, and those suckers are expensive!

If that was meant for me I got the gray bus bins at sams club they cost about 6 bucks each and are sold in pairs they are very hevy duty plastic. You can probably find them at a resturant supply company too. Those racks are actually very nice. not as big as the concrete tub rack but big enough to hold 1.5 breeders. As long as you pull the babies when they are ready. The black concrete tubs I use for pregnant rats I got at home depot for around 5 bucks each. The home depot tubs have a much stiffer edge to them than the ones sold at lowes. I would recomend a watering system the water bottles are a bit like work. I would also recomend you build a few of the lab block holders/cages that are posted somewhere here in the forums. I just made a test one and will be converting all the cages to them. You will waste alot less rodent block that way.

Im trying to get away from seed, I doubt I will ever be able to fully get away from it but not having to buy seed or makinging it last alot longer woud be nice.

We use bus tubs too, with 1/4" mesh. Our tubs are 5 inches high and I think they would be better shorter for the ASF's. The little weaners cant reach the food or water sipper very well, which is really only a problem when you have to pull them away from the parents.
