UH OH! Government is at it again.
-
Re: UH OH! Government is at it again.
Wow
This is gonna suck.
That irresponsible snake owner/parent in florida brought us all into this.
I guess its time to deal with it AGAIN.
-
Re: UH OH! Government is at it again.
I guess this means that we're going to have to step up and take responsibility--like he said, that included making sure that any animals we keep are kept properly and safely, and making sure that others who keep the animals are also kept properly and safely. I guess it's time to start writing letters to congressmen again! I have every faith that this community as a whole will pull together and defeat HR 2811.

Re: UH OH! Government is at it again.
here we go... im going to fight this with everything i have...
-
Re: UH OH! Government is at it again.
Oh no...
I can't give away my pythons...
Or any of my snakes.
I love them wayy too much.
And especially my first BP, Candice, whose the nicest snakes I've ever owned!

Re: UH OH! Government is at it again.
To ballpythonlover
We are not going to give away our pythons..
We just won't be able to buy, breed, or sell them anymore(if it passes)
But that little girl being killed by that burm in florida was the fuel in the fire here.
It will be much harder for us to stop it from passing because of that damn owner in florida.

Ya that was so stupid of that person to not have the proper enclosure and he didn't even have a license to keep the snake. I'm just worried because I really don't want to lose my female.. she's the sweetest snake I've ever had. I'll fight hard to not let this pass because no herper wants to stop the love for pythons.

Re: UH OH! Government is at it again.
Am I crazy? or are there two bills that are exactly the same going on as of right now, with different names? look,
http://www.reptilechannel.com/reptil...ython-ban.aspx
http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h2811/show
WTF?
-
Re: UH OH! Government is at it again.
The full text,
S.373
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s111-373
H.R.2811
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-2811
Are these different? They have the same title, "A bill to amend title 18, United States Code, to include constrictor snakes of the species Python... "
I'm confused. I sense something fishy.
-
Re: UH OH! Government is at it again.
Pythontricker:
HR2811 is a ban on pythons in general, no selling, trading, etc.... S373 takes it a step further banning importation and exportation... I am pretty sure at some point both bills will become one.
But we all must get ready for another harsh war!
-
Re: UH OH! Government is at it again.
why do they care if we have snakes, picture it like cars, people have cars, and accidents happen and kill people i think its kinda like have a snake you dont keep them responsiibally things happen, you dont drive safe you hit someone.
-
Re: UH OH! Government is at it again.
Dang, and I live in florida too.... ARG@! Alright, its game time lets beat'em!
-
Re: UH OH! Government is at it again.
Maybe florida should just put a whole bunch of restrictions on burms in particular, maybe people only licensed can sell, breed, and buy burms, signing a contract stating what you know the owner is going to have to deal with, make sure he only has one sex of burmese in his house, all that stuff. Not to be mean but I think florida's burms usually are the cause of these bills popping up.
-
Re: UH OH! Government is at it again.
I hate to say this, and its not something against the all the people of florida in general, but... This seems to be a problem for florida and florida itself. lol. I mean seriously, I know there are responsible pet keepers in florida, but based on the geography, its ideal for people (irresponsible morons) to let there burms go... Based on our government, its far from ideal. I wish people could just learn these things easier, and further more, earlier than right now, as our beloved hobby is about to be taken away FROM EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US. It just seems our government will always be a strict black and white, never any grey area. :colbert:

They already did and it didn't work. You already have to have a permit in the state of florida to own a burm. this really means nothing tho considering 95% of the people who own them in florida own them illegally.

And correct me if I am wrong here, but when you buy a hatchling at a pet shop, you don't have to show them a permit or anything, because I don't believe you even have to get the permit until they reach a certain size.

Re: UH OH! Government is at it again.
Wether they ban or not, it's not going to stop somebody I know:D. The government has instated many laws that have not stopped a lot of us from commiting what ever crime it be(for ex. talking on cell phones and driving, speeding, rolling a stop sign). Its just another ticket we'll have to pay. So much for the land of the free, it has now become the land of the fee. The government is creating a big rutt between society and themselves.:rolleye2:

Is it your government creating that rutt or your fellow lawbreaking friends?
I'm all for privacy but why do you thing those laws and regulations were put in place to begin with? It's not because of the guys doing it right, never having a problem.
It's for the dumbasses, the lowest common denominators, it's for them, or more correctly, because of them, that there is need for regulation at all.
I'm all for ragging on the government but let's do it when it's deserved not when it's a convenient excuse to continue your misbehavior.

this dude needs to get slammed. 56 unlaid eggs ready to hatch....

Re: UH OH! Government is at it again.
I heard the after it is passed, it will be revised to exclude any pythons witch they dont find injurous :) I think that means something good for ball pythons! This is what I found:
YouTube - HR669 Round 2 (S373)
Apparently, it willl only include the big five, except for the anaconda (it is not a python)

Re: UH OH! Government is at it again.
I must say Mr. nelson makes a good point, the only thing he said that i disagree with is that a Burm could take down a Florida panther; that have to be a giant snake to compete with a panther, though i guess still possible. Im sure everyone here can admit that the big pythons like burms, retics, rock pythons and other BIG constrictors do pose a threat to humans, wildlife and the eco-system when introduced to our wilderness; or even when kept as pets by irresponsible keepers.
Well now they(the government or nelson) wants to ban importation and exportation as well as buying, or breeding. Although I think the MAIN FOCUS here is on BIG snakes not all snakes in general because if that were the case they'd have to assess EVERY SINGLE SPECIES which would take forever; dont worry BP lovers I don't see how any member of congress or biologist can convince anyone that a Ball python is a dangerous invasive species.
In the case of big snakes Permits and chipping doesn't solve the problem because they've already tried that, irresponsible or uninformed people still manage to possess them without permits. So the next step would be to conduct what is trying to be done here with these 2 bills, a complete absolute ban, but would that work? How do you even enforce a ban? Let alone on a species thats in hundreds of homes, that would still pose a potential threat of getting out of their enclosure into the wild. Also just because you ban importation and exportation doesn't mean it will stop, it will just be illegal to do so. I don't think its going to fix the problem of invasive species like the Burmese python thriving in the southern states but would only slow it down... a tad.
Let me make myself clear I AM IN NO WAY IN FAVOR OF NOR APPROVE OF EITHER OF THESE BILLS. I hate the idea of prohibition and regulation no matter the subject. Thing is big snakes & big monitors are posing a threat to our natural environment and their territory is only going to broaden to different states unless something is done; but what cuz i don't know an answer other than to teach the world how to appreciate these animals but at the same time how to properly care for them and show the potential of how big a problem they become when released into the wild.
Let's respond quickly and efficiently to these bills cuz last time with HR669 it was a sloppy mess the message we the Herp World conveyed to the House or Senate or whatever was
::taz::taz:DONT TAKE OUR SNAKES, DONT TAKE OUR SNAKES:taz::taz:

So what you are saying is me keeping my snakes in misbehavior? If they ban them and I keep my snakes should I be condemned? I'm sure 90-98% of people on these forums will not get rid of thier animals, WILL THEY???
-
Re: UH OH! Government is at it again.
Call me what you will, but if anyone comes knocking on my door for my snakes they are going to wish they had passed a few more gun laws before hand.

You honestly think they will exclude something from a law they get passed? Laws become more strict most of the time. If they want to exclude certain pythons then why not write the bill like that in the first place.
Lambs to the slaughter, that is what they are hoping for if they are spreading that bogus crap. Instead of passing more laws they need to be enforcing the laws they have. I know it might be hard and will not take care of the problem at hand, but neither will a ban. Hunt these snakes to extinction in the glades and enforce laws harder than what they are now.

Nope. Sort of the opposite in fact.
What I said, in different words, is that the less inclined to think before acting, the ones who use glass tanks for large snakes, who take them out in public just for the attention, who make videos of them eating cute and fuzzy bunnies because it's "natural" are the ones who are responsible for the rest of us who use proper caging, who don't draw unnecessary attention to ourselves, who are smart enough to know that keeping a low profile by NOT doing stupid things, now having to deal with permits and restrictions and all this crap that is going on.

I agree with you on that Wes. I'm sure 20 people got shot in California last night, and we don't see a ban on guns?? My father-in-law got attacked by a dog the other day while delivering a load of materials to a homeowners house(while working). He got 17 Staples due to it!! STAPLES not stitches!! I guarantee you if it were my 2 year old daughter, she wouldn't have stood a chance against that dog. We don't see a ban on dogs?? I'm sure 100 people overdosed on prescription drugs last night alone, and we don't see a ban on those either? :taz::taz::taz:

Re: UH OH! Government is at it again.
Just keep the "guns" part out of it. Their have been enough useless bans on them as it is.
-
Re: UH OH! Government is at it again.
You know how many people died from pet pythons in the usa since 1980. 12. Thats it. That is 0.413793103448275 bla bla bla a year. THATS NOTHING!!

I know this doesn't help the cause at all but Burms and other large pythons have been known to take on leopards in the native range. Of course its not something that is done completely because its a risk for top predator to try to eat another top predator. It is something to worry about though and these snakes are bad to the enviroment and think something needs to be done. A complete ban though I don't think is the solution though.
