Strange behavior in male when female is around..
I haven't seen him act like this before, even when the other times I've had both the male and the female out on my bed. Today I was just sitting on my bed with both of my BPs and my female (I guess you could say) was resting on him, and he did an odd behavior even after she stopped resting on him. He lifted his head up straight in the air, but not anything like star gazing (when a snake has IBD). When he was around her, he would left up his head for a few minutes, then put it back down and wander around my bed. It was strange, was he trying to get her attention or something like that? He doesn't have IBD, if he did he would be star gazing and his body would have been a little twisted. He can also right himself when turned over and he has not regurgitated so I'm sure he shows no signs of IBD. What was he doing though? I've never had a male BP before, so he's my first (and 2nd BP owned) male. I couldn't take a picture because my phone ran out of minutes so I can't send anything and my camera used up all of the batteries I own. Next time I notice he does this, I will for sure take a picture. All he did was lift his head and neck (neck was straight, not curved or anything) off of the ground, but not staring straight up, more like staring forward.

I think he wants to do some intertwining. How old is he?

I'm not sure.. I wasn't told how old he was when I got him. He's a little over a foot, but he's still very young. I'm guessing between 5-6months of age. I heard of males that successfully bred with females at that young of age too. He always seems VERY interested in her, as she seems very interested in him too lol she follows him around sometimes.

LOL weird. I havent exposed my males to my females much, but the first one I did I had my boy lock up within ten minutes. The females I have are more interested in finding a way down my shirt than chasing tail.

I've just created my avatar, and boy, your description sounds like the picture I used! Took it yesterday after it had eaten. At the time, I swear it was listening to the "Thriller" album as that's what was playing at the time, and he was facing toward the CD player, LOL!

Lol every time I handle my female she somehow sneaks her way into going into my shirt. She always tries going through the sleeve when she's around my neck. When she's in my lap and I'm not paying attention she will sometimes wander off and wrap around the leg of the chair lol. She's such a curious snake, she likes to wander around a lot but she stays still if I leave her on my bed or chair or anywhere to go do something quick for a minute or two and she won't move until I get back and pick her up. A funny thing is that I passed out on my couch with her one time and she was laying on my stomach somewhat curled up (my hand was on her so she couldn't fall off) and I woke up two hours later and she was still there sleeping too. Lol such a cool snake:)

Ya same here. You see Patricia's avatar? That's exactly what my male was doing, but his head wasn't tilted upward it was more looking straight forward. I'll have to take a pic to show if I see him doing it next time. Right now I'm at my dad's house so I don't have any of my snakes here, and he gave me some batteries for my camera so when I notice my male doing that head thing again I'll for sure get a pic up

I used to have a BP that would extend himself up and look at me, kind of like ____P for hours. He wasnt sick, just weird according to my vet lol.

Re: Strange behavior in male when female is around..
Well that's good that he wasn't sick. It's always a pain dealing with sick snakes lol. So far, I haven't dealt with any. Hopefully I won't for a while. I've had to deal with mites twice which I feared the snakes getting IBD, but gladly I got rid of them and there were no signs of IBD. That made me a happy camper lol. My snake was doing this when he was near my female: ______/- (the - is a little too low, but that stands for his head.. just pretend it wasn't on his neck like it appears in what I typed lol).

Oooohh yaaaa I should go pro:D. Do you know what I mean when he does that thing with his head though? I think he was doing it to impress my girl, she seems VERY interested in him cuz she cuddles with him, lays on him, and follows him lol.

Re: Strange behavior in male when female is around..
I dont know of any male mating behavior displays besides tickling the female with his spurs when he's trying to get up on it. Its interesting though that he does that. And she follows him thats pretty cool. I should take my BPs out and see if they exhibit the same behavior.

Re: Strange behavior in male when female is around..
Ya it seems like this is a cool experiment to do:). When I put my BPs together I watched closely on their behaviors because my female hasn't been up close with another snake of her kind in a year and I'm not even sure if the male has been up close with a BP that is older than him and even up close to a BP at all. When I got him he was in his own enclosure, away from other snakes. I purchased (or I guess rescued) him at the Arizona Herpetological Society and I gotta say that place is the most amazing place I've ever been to. What shocked me the most was seeing a huge all white Rattlesnake. Man that thing was a beast lol.

Re: Strange behavior in male when female is around..
Weird. My BPs all hang together after they get checked out and during cleaning and weighing days. I have a weirdo little 300gm het albino that loves to weave herself in and out of this one big breeder female. She'll only do it to her and she'll go over under and around her everytime.

Re: Strange behavior in male when female is around..
Lol that seems kinda strange. Maybe she looks up to that female? It's possible haha. My female like puts her head underneath my male's body and will also just go underneath him and around him to cuddle or something. I think it's kind of cute though because they both will sit there and cuddle:)

Sounds like you got yourself the care bear BPs. Hugs and kisses, love and hearts and all that mushy stuff.

Re: Strange behavior in male when female is around..
Haha I guess I do. I just can't wait until I mate them in 6months-1 year. I think I'm going to try to breed next Spring if my female gets about 1500 grams. I don't know how much she weighs at the moment because I keep forgetting to purchase a gram scale. Where could I get one and how much would a decent one cost me?

Re: Strange behavior in male when female is around..
I bought mine for 13 bucks or so on eBay that reads up to 11 lbs. Its kinda cheapo and the instructions for it suck, but it works well for me and a couple of other people on here.
Here's the thread. Me and mrshawt stand by them.

Re: Strange behavior in male when female is around..
It works awesome! The only thing that sucks is the bowl is tiny, so I just use a big blue bowl I have and tare it to 0, still accurate. The biggest deviation Ive had was 5 gms.

Re: Strange behavior in male when female is around..
Ya I want a gram scale that doesn't come with a bowl because I know my snakes will try to get out of it and they will think it's feeding time lol. I want a gram scale that has sort of like a flat surface so that prevents my snakes from thinking I'm feeding them lol.

Hard to measure without a bowl. I find that using a big bowl makes them actually just chill out in the bowl. Diff snakes, different tastes though huh.

Patricia's avatar is am example of a BP para-scoping its believed to be a way of checking out the terrain around it. Noting to worry about.

Its called periscoping. This has nothing to do with the female.
It is in fact, very cute.

Re: Strange behavior in male when female is around..
Both of my BPs lift their head off of the ground into the air when we put them on the ground. It is usually a sign of a curious snake "surveying" their environment. Maybe because in the wild, their ancestors moved around on tall grass and raised their head up to see their environment, and since their in a place with tall things, like TVs, drawers, racks, etc. their instincts make them lift their heads up. I think its cool whenever they lift their heads up because he is like a cobra :)
