Going to KC Reptile Show.. what to get??
I will be going to the reptile show in overland park this weekend and I want to know what people think would be a good buy. I will probably end up spending around $200 and I am looking to get ball pythons. I already have several snakes and I got three ball pythons, 1.2, but they are all normals. I want to get a color morph to add some color to my collection and breed it eventually. Should I get a male, female? and what morph would be good? I was thinking spider or pastel or some codom type because I can get more of the same color type by breeding.

First of all i am assuming you already have an enclosure set up,
If not that leaves you with a lot less money.
But, if you have the enclosure i would say go for a male pastel.

Yeah, I have a rack system that I built and I am going to build another one within the next couple of weeks. I almost have the one full, but there are a few spaces for another snake or two :) I may have to post pics of my setup on here eventually when I get to it. I was thinking about a male pastel then I could get some other normal females there also. We'll see what happens, I will post what I get though!

Blood pythons, all the way. :gj:

But, if you're looking for a ball... are you talking baby or juvie or adult? You could probably find a hatchling male spider for $200, probably not an adult.

Pastels are cool, but they fade out so much. If I were to get a pastel, I'd get a super bright hatchling so that even if it did fade out, it would be a nice-looking adult; such as a NERD lemon pastel. However, that may cost you a bit over $200.

Did you go today or or you going tomorrow? We didn't get to go today as we had mowing to do. But we'll be there tomorrow.

As for what to get. Hmmm, I would probably get a male spider if you can find a nice one for that price there.

Good luck and let us know if you got something. :gj:

Re: Going to KC Reptile Show.. what to get??
I was asking myself this questions as well lol. I think a Pastel, Spider, or Cinnamon would be a great choice. You can get each for about $200+, but most Pastels will be under $200. If you wanted a really beautiful bright Pastel, you'd probably be spending over $200. Honestly, I like the Spiders and Cinnamons, but Pastels cost less so if you don't want to spend a lot of money I would say go for the Pastel. They are still a beautiful morph(:

Depending on size, if you wanted a BP that would be around 4 feet as an adult, go for a male. Females are larger than males, but if you wanted one that gets large like 5-6 feet go for a female (:

Re: Going to KC Reptile Show.. what to get??
Ok, so I went to the show today and spent more money then planned...you know how it goes... plan on spending a little then spend a lot lol. I got a pastel male that is possible het for hypo and a poss. het hypo female as well. It would be nice if they prove out, but I won't know for a couple years because they are both pretty fresh(you can still see the scar from their umbillical cords. The pastel is pretty bright and the het hypo female looks great as well. She has a very yellow underside, like a yellowbelly, I will post pics of the two eventually, but they are both great. I got a good deal on the pair. I also bought a pair of pastel boas from a breeder from omaha. They are little as well as you can see their scars as well. I was kind of disappointed in the number of balls that they had there. There were way more boas than ball pythons which I thought would be the opposite, but it was a good time. I will get pics up as soon as I can. :D

I drove 3.5 hours to get to this show. If you live in town then you should have no problem getting there. It is going on tomorrow 7/12 as well.

Yes there was a lot of boas there. But at least they did seem to have more vendors than usual. Since it's a show that they have every other month sometimes it seemed hard to get people to vend there every time. I saw some really nice male spiders for $200.
I was in hopes of getting a female Bloodred Corn Snake which it seems no one had. Oh well, the babies are still pretty small this time of year so I'll wait. :)

Glad to hear you got something you really liked. And can't wait to see pictures!

yes the one with the mister and the dragon at the back, the dragon was cool tho when i was holding it, it climbed ontop of my head a couple times lol..

and the gators were at the table by the entrance on the left as you come in.. the other side of the doorway to rodent pro.. they had tons of spiders and stuff on the same table too.

Re: Going to KC Reptile Show.. what to get??
I really wanted to go to this show. I went to the july show last year and got a normal male RTB. Was planning on getting a pastel this year but had to work. I will be at the September show.
By then I will be looking at getting another Boa, normal BP and possibly a Pastel.

Did anyone see what quality of pastels Frick 'n Frack Feeder Shack had? They might of been at the Go Lizards table. They are about 5minutes from my house and I get all my feeders from them.
Also what about Dumerils Boas? I know last year Konza from Manhattan had some that were born about two days before the show and they hadn't even had a shed yet.

I also don't feel to bad missing this show as it seems a lot of BP breeders are just now beginning to get clutches to hatch.

Yeah, they were the veranus and arachnids unlimited... I must have missed the gators. They had a lot of the scorpions and spiders as well as a few monitors, turtles and frogs. They had a lot of everything. There was a breeder from omaha that had some baby pastels that were very cheap, pairs for 125 I think. He gave me a good deal on a very clean pair of pastels.... only got to wait 3-4 years until I get to see what the offspring look like :( but it should be cool. I will get some pics up of the stuff tomorrow some time. If any one else got something it would be cool to see some pics!

yep, there was quite a few pastels floating around and a very nice dumerils boa adult, pretty big. there was also a REALY! nice silver back boa too, he was huge! and was only 200 bucks, he is a proven breeder.

Jordy, did you see that pied on the herpers stand? he was a nice snake!

Yeah, they had a few really nice snakes on that stand! There was also the guy down the center of the room that had some awesome balls. He had a clown in one of his displays, a spider, a realy high white pied and another ball...maybe axanthic or something like that, but he had some good looking snakes. I am very happy with my purchases at the show!:banana:

Isn't it cheaper to make your own racks? I have seen those AP one and boaphile racks and the prices are rediculous, granted they are made of plastic compared to really heavy melamine. I made a rack that was like 4x2x2 and it probably weighs 150lbs, but I would rather have a heavy rack then pay $200 more. Are they worth the money??

This upcoming season will be my first season breeding, so I have yet to get my first rack, but I'm with you. AP is a great company, great products, I love the cages, but I plan to build my own rack, or using lids on the tubs and stacking them, as I am only going to have one or two clutches.

However, if I ever get more into breeding, with six or more clutches per year, I think I'd invest in a high quality rack such as an AP or a Boaphile.

I might try to get my dad to build me a rack. He has the tools to get them done fast, and is currently unemployed. I need something to house BPs, RTBs and potential RTB hatchlings in the next 18months.

If you have the needed tools and what not I feel you cant go wrong in trying ot build your own rack.

it really is not THAT! much cheaper to make your own, after taking heat and everything in to consideration, and the little extra that it may cost is well worth the professionally built quality light weight easy on the eyes rack.

Yeah, I guess that it isn't a whole lot cheaper for many people. Kind of forgot that my father is the manager for a lumber yard and I can get wood cheaper through him...so I guess that it is cheaper for me. I made my last rack that holds all size tubs for like 40 bucks for the lumber. Anyways, I finally got some pics of the snakes I got from KC.

Has anyone ever been to the Midwest Reptile Expo recently? There was a post in this thread with a link to that and there is a show in September in Independence, MO and it looks like it could be fun. Anyone ever been to it? Is it worth driving 3 hours to go to? I thought the KC Reptile show was worth the 3 hours so is it better or worse?
