probly the millionth tub question

switching over to a tub, i have a 3 foot bp and i want him to have plenty of room, im putting in bunch of dollar genral plastic vines and a bunch of other stuff anywho what size tub would you reccomend for a 3 footer that needs some room to roam and a good home!:rolleyes: *atleast i didnt ask how to set it up:P* (but i understand yall are always willing to help other people including myself, thanks:gj: )

Others may have different recommendations but personally I'd go with a 32qt for him (if it its fact a him). Though I guess you may want bigger if you're gonna put all the vines and everything in there as well.

With all the vines and considering this is likely a pet snake and not in a racking system why not just go for a 41 qt. Personally I prefer the Iris brand as they are almost glass clear. You'll get a better viewing experience and with all that cover your snake shouldn't feel overly exposed to the world.

I use a number of these tubs in a racking system for breeding size female ball pythons so if you need dimensions, don't hesitate to ask. :)

I actually have a clear sterilite container that measures 44" X 19 3/4" X 6 3/8". It's a 74 quart container. That's probably not enough height for vines but gives a lot of floor space for him to move around.

I would go with a 42qt tub then. 74 is way too much in my opinion.

Maybe you're right about that. I went back and reread his post and realized he said it was 3 feet long. Mine is 4 1/2 feet long. Although, if you have enough hides in there maybe it wouldn't be too bad, even for a 3 foot long snake? Just asking.

Where do you get Isis tubs? I've only seen Sterilite at Target.

i use the 41qt tub withthe locking lids/handles) asI do take th snakes out so they do get extra roaming time. I also seen the 50 something under bed size tubs they can work as well if keeping a single snake just remember to watch setting up the tub and the heat source since it on wheels and will not transmit the heat as well if you don't tape it ot the tub itself.( or remove the wheels)

Well, ball pythons really don't need as much space as you think. I think a 74qt tub is just over kill. Its just twice as much space as you need and you have to heat and cool that space. For me it would just be a pain. The ball python will be perfectly fine in a 42qt, but a 74qt could pose some problems. Stress from being too large, not getting temps right, etc etc.

IRIS tubs. You can also buy them at the container store if you have one near you. They aren't really obvious that they are iris. They only have a tiny logo on them usually on the bottom of the tub I believe. When I bought them they weren't even labeled as having a brand.

Actually, as far as the temps go, I've never had a problem with that. It's only 6 3/8" high so there isn't much height for the heat to escape or spread out. And actually, I think 74 quarts makes it sound bigger than what it is or looks like. Being that he's about 54 inches long in a 44 inch long container, and being as fat as he is, since he's a typical stocky BP, it's not as much room as you might think. I've sometimes worried that it wasn't enough room for him actually. But, getting back to the 3 foot long bp, I'd agree that it might be too large for a snake that size. I've had mine 6 1/2 years without any signs of stress in any setup I've used while he has grown so he seems to be happy anyway. :) Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it.

Hmm, these tubs are a great price. You don't have any heating/humidity problems with them, right?
The UTH's don't get too hot for the plastic, do they?

If you live in a dry climate, tubs are so much easier to maintain humidity in. You basically do nothing extra. It just holds humidity like it should.

If the UTH is too hot for the plastic then it is far to hot for your snake. All heating devices should be controlled by a thermostat to prevent cooking your snake.

Here's the million-and-first tub question: You can keep BPs in a plastic storage box??? :O

Why is it, then, that everything I've read online and in books is about dimensions of tanks? And that's all that's available in pet stores? The instructions that came with the UTH pad clearly says glass only, and lists a variety of surfaces it should NOT be used with, plastic being one of them.

Oh help, my head is reeling with all this BP info... It's like there's general snake/BP info out there, then there's this forum of actual, concerned BP owners that, frankly, I trust more. I hope our new snake doesn't die of old age before we get all of this right. :sigh2:

You seem a bit over-concerned over something that needs no concern what-so-ever.
For the past couple decades that breeders and keepers have had these animals, they have been in tanks and tubs. Almost every larger scale breeder uses tubs, and I believe if they were stressed (as ball pythons are so easily stressed) they wouldn't eat, breed, and thrive in the tubs.
My animals eat better and act calmer when they are in tubs from a tank. I think the real question here is; Can you keep ball pythons in tanks??? Of course you can, though it can be more stressful because of the clearer sides and less enclosed area.

Ball pythons prefer burrow-like cages where they are secure and in tight dark hides. Tanks are bright and have very little security, often causing stress on ball pythons. There is no good reason why ball pythons can not be kept in tubs. It also is 10x easier to heat and retain humidity IMO.
Plus, if you have over 10 snakes, do you really want 10 tanks? When that number hops to 50 or 100, then what? ;)

To the OP. I think a 32q would work fine, but I think the Iris 72qts are the same floorspace as a 41q. However, why do you need vines in there for the animal? Ball pythons really can't climb well, and if you provide climbing opportunities, they could fall and hurt themselves.

As someone totally new to snakes, there seems to be a lot of conflicting information on both the web and in books.
