    Reptile Hobby Survey
The Ratsnake Foundation have launched there sister site today www.reptilesurveys.info a site specifically to run a series of surveys, on various aspects of the hobby, ratsnake husbandry, breedinig etc.

The site is open to anyone, anywhere to participate in, as, that way, we feel we will get a broader audience and greater participation. There is a simple captcha to complete before taking the survey, this is in place soley to stop spam bots from submitting there junk through it (not to test your maths ability ).

The results of the surveys will be published on the Ratsnake Foundation and also in other herpetological societies newsletters who are co-operating with us.

Please take a moment to visit the site and take the survey your participation is greatly appreciated - Thank you :D

Who are these other Herp. Societies you mention? How long have you guys been around?

What, exactly, is this information to be used for again?

Sorry if I seem sort of slow, but I didn't quite get it.

    Hi Wilomn

The Ratsnake Foundation was formed in January 2007, we are an online herpetological society for enthusiasts of Ratsnake & Related genera (a non-profit organisation, we donate any monies made, over and above our running costs to a ‘Ratsnake Conservation’ project each year, this year we donated to Project Zamenis, a conservation project to protect Zamenis longissimus (Aesculapian Snake) in the Czech Republic via continued study and habitat maintenance. This is our secondary objective, our primary one is to form an ever growing body of research material for interested parties (largely hobbyist) by accumulating data via our applications, articles and forums.

The answers from this particular survey will hopefully give a general overview of the hobby worldwide, across different continents, cultures and age groups. It may also reveal some interesting trends within the hobby. Other surveys will be added to the application, that are more specific in their topics e.g.: quarantine procedures, incubation methods etc.

The purpose of the surveys is mainly to gather data for analysis. We feel that the results will be of interest to other hobbyists, as well as breeders, retail outlets, manufacturers and in some instances (depending on subject matter) scientists etc.

It will be freely available on our site for anyone to view and made available to any herpetological society to publish in their newsletter/journal. We are in the process of contacting other societies to publish our request for participation in the surveys, until they actually publish our request it is impossible for us to say who they are, as we are only just getting started in rolling out this project. We will, however be listing them on the front page of the survey when they do respond.

There is nothing sinister in our request, no information will be sold or bartered for. The survey is completely anonymous, no personal/identifying information is asked for. A lot of people who have taken the survey have enjoyed doing so and commented how interesting they thought it was and looking forward to sharing the results.

    Hahahahahaha

That was the funniest thing I have read all day.

I think the thing is that when someone asks for information on a subject that is so touchy as it is.

With all the new laws and legislations going out...I feel sort of awkward being asked for info like that.

I mean yes, they can just come here and see, but to have it all written on paper, filed, sorted, analyzed, and statisticized.......not for me.

I understand your concerns and the last thing we want is for folks to feel uncomfortable - if I understand what your saying, even though the survey is completely anonymous your concern lies with the fact that anti reptile groups etc. may take the data and use it against us ? This could also work the other way round, in that we are armed with statistics to fight in our own corner.?
I am by no way trying to talk you into taking the survey, we must all do what we feel comfortable doing. Thank you for expressing your concerns.:)

    Re: Reptile Hobby Survey
Just for the records, I was raised by wolves and had no contact with humans in my formative years.

Also, does anyone REALLY believe that anything posted on the internet is truly anonymous?

I have no problem with this survey, nor with wanting to get info out there.

I have no problem asking questions of those who want my information.

I also have no problem once I have asked a question and been answered declining to participate or taking part should I make that decision.

To simply answer blindly because a question was asked, not venturing to find out who really wants to know or why, is simply not my way.

    So, you sheep, feel free.

I'm really not much of a follower anyway.

You spared him the "more flies with honey than vinegar" advice..........

Guess you're not about constructive criticism - eh?

    Re: Reptile Hobby Survey
Out of curiosity I took it, sacrificing my own safety in the process, putting myself at risk of being exposed as a *gasp* reptile keeper.

The most it identifies you is as male/female and which country you live in(although it's not even country, more like region, I had to pick North America, not even US). Unless someone is tracking via how I signed on(you don't really 'join' but just type in a spambot defeater number), I'd guess it's as anonymous as posting here(more so actually).

I wasn't really pleased with the survey, as some of the questions needed "none" added in, instead of having to pick "no answer". It was also heavily geared towards "How many ratsnakes", "How many species of ratsnakes", "Will you get more ratsnakes", when I don't own any ratsnakes. If there had been a "none" option on a lot, I would have answered, rather than hitting "no answer".

Other than that, it was pretty darned general. I have no idea how it would help or hurt the hobby, I was just curious as to what sort of questions it would be posing.
