Re: Night Time Shooting
I hate when little emo kids take pictures of something and put it in B and W or whatever and call themselves photographers.
Simple shots like those are what it's all about:D
Great shots Patrick!

Re: Night Time Shooting
Pat what speed did you take this at??

Re: Night Time Shooting
Ed, believe it or not, I shoot all my nightime at iso 100....yup thats right! LOL
I really dont like the grainyness that anything above ISO200 gives you.
I shot those all at F2.8...I know its wide open, but that lets in every bit of light that I can get.

Re: Night Time Shooting
Super cool man.
What is the bright white spot in the second picture? I can't stop going back to look at it...I keep scrolling up to lookk at it...the light...it has some...sort of hold...on me....

Re: Night Time Shooting
That would be an oil barrack off the coast. I thought it gave a nice balance to have it smack dab in the middle.

I agree about the grainyness.
I imagine you used a tripiod. What was your exposure time?
What type of camera & lens setup are you using?
-
Re: Night Time Shooting
Yeah it was a tripod for sure...exposure time I think was one was 25 and the other was 15. The lights on the pier forced me to reduce shutter time.
As far as Camera and lens
Just a Rebel XT and a Sigma 50mm f2.8 DG Macro Lens.
I am drooling over over the Canon 55-250mm.
I need some reach damnit! LOL

Re: Night Time Shooting

I like your shots. Long exposure night shots bring out the best color.
If you don't have one look at getting a remote shutter release. They have cabled ones and remote ones. I bet you'd have a blast with bulb mode.

Re: Night Time Shooting
Thanx everyone. It was about 10:45, 10:30 on the conservative side. Pitch black, when I took those.
Tim, would love to come visit again, you know that!

Love the first pic, Patrick! It reminds me of the post-impressionists.

Re: Night Time Shooting
Please note, these are old.
Eh, I like this picture, but it was very difficult to do. I was using one of the original digital cameras (it was a brick!) and working very hard to hold the camera steady and it still turned blurry.
Oh well. I like it anyway.

And well, this is sort-of night time at dusk. Same crappy camera though.

Re: Night Time Shooting
Old pics but you guys have inspired me to do more night-time shots-

I'll have to try some different iso settings- I usually go for aperture priority. And these I could have done less during post processing too, I was very new to the camera & photography in general.

Re: Night Time Shooting
That one of the tree reminded me of this one - no post-processing other than the crop and re-size, just a minute-long exposure with some funky light in the background...

Re: Night Time Shooting
Thanks! That there is a one in (literally) a hundred crappy shots.
Summer of 08 we got a lot of gorgeous thunderstorms here. The only thing preventing me from taking killer photos was wind and rain. I got a lot of pictures of piddly strikes, but that one was definitely the best, even if it just a tad over exposed.
This is the clearest strike we got, but very small.

Re: Night Time Shooting
Alright, here we go. Hopefully the links come through. I'm not attaching any because the full size versions are 10MP as well as high quality. For a given picture (once you click the thumbnail), the little icon with a small and larger square gets you the full size. The little camera icon will show the EXIF data.
Lightning: http://fire-eyes.org/gal/v/ob/n/wthr/l/
Fireworks: http://fire-eyes.org/gal/v/ot/var/fw/ms/
What I found interesting in both situations is that high ISO wasn't needed. And especially in the case of lightning, could work heavily against you. The hardest aspect to me is nailing the focus. I'd dial in my other settings and go for the most distant light I could get. The camera allows me to live view and then zoom in 10x, at which point I'm able to fine tune the focus. I still haven't learned my lesson and gotten some gaffing tape to HOLD it there though... I suppose a few more knocks when things are really going crazy will teach me.
