a bit morbid.. music and suicide? (a request for songs)
I'm helping out a friend who is doing some ethics/psychology/sociology thesis research of some sort and needs a list of music and/or albums that either deal with suicide or are somehow linked with suicide and depression.

So far the only thing I could think of for him was the Eels album Electroshock Blues (the entire album is sort of Mr. E's emotional response to his sister's suicide and mother's death which both occurred pretty close to each other). Unfortunately for my friend most of the music I listen to is completely instrumental so I was hoping maybe my friends from the internets could help me help him out! :)

    There are a lot...
The first song that comes to mind is the M*A*S*H theme, "Suicide is Painless"
I don't know the original singer, but Marilyn Manson and some others have re-made the song.
    "Breath Me" Sia
    "Hurt" Nine Inch Nails/Johnny Cash
    "My Friend of Misery" Metallica
"Over and Out" Airborne Toxic Event
    "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" Metallica
"Where the Moss Slowly Grows" Tiger Army
    "Everybody Hurts" REM
"Don't Fear the Reaper" I can't rember this artist

    Hope that helps!

This probably won't be much help, as it's just about a guy who hates his life, but...

One of my favourite bands and one of my favourite albums is Sound The Alarm by Saves The Day. Most of the tracks deal with the kind of subject matter you're looking for. One track specifically is Head For The Hills. The lyrics can be found here.

Rest of their lyrics can be found here.

I have some suggestions that hopefully help.

Emery - as your voice fades
YouTube - Emery - As Your Voice Fades (acoustic live)

Hoobastank - crawling in the dark ; More about not knowing what to do with his life. Here's the lyrics:
    http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/hooba...inthedark.html

Nine Inch nails- hurt (like already suggested)

Slipknot - Purity (might not help too much)

    Slipknot - My Plague
    http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.n...256AC0000BA356

    Staind - waste (maybe)
    http://www.lyrics007.com/Staind%20Ly...%20Lyrics.html

Poison the Well - pieces of you in me (id say thats pretty depressed)
    http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.n...256C630029818E

Flyleaf - Cassie; is about Columbine

Armor for Sleep did an entire album on the theme of death.

Maybe Something by Atreyu like "The rememberance Balad"

Well, I just went through my collection of music that's on my laptop, that's all I could find. I hope that helps. Maybe some oldschool Linkin Park might hit the spot. All of these are more on the Depression note as opposed to the suiside, other than the slipknot (they blame everything in the world on them) and the song Cassie by Flyleaf. Hope it helps! I'll keep lookin :gj:

It's about the last time I tried to commit suicide, and more to the point, the first day I figured out what life was all about. It's about the last day in a life I don't want to remember and about the first day in a life that I am living right now.

I guess he will find a lot in the Joy Division discography, the singer and songwriter was badly depressive and commited suicide by hanging himself 1980.

The Mars Volta had a concept album called "De-Loused in the Comatorium"

Its supposed to be the journey one of their friends had while in a coma. He was suicidal before he entered the coma and after being in the coma for a long time he came out of it only to commit suicide.

Sorry for that much double posting:
    But some Joy Division Lyrics:

    Lyrics to Isolation :
In fear every day, every evening,
He calls her aloud from above,
    Carefully watched for a reason,
    Painstaking devotion and love,
    Surrendered to self preservation,
From others who care for themselves.
    A blindness that touches perfection,
But hurts just like anything else.

    Isolation, isolation, isolation.

Mother I tried please believe me,
I'm doing the best that I can.
I'm ashamed of the things I've been put through,
I'm ashamed of the person I am.

    Isolation, isolation, isolation.

But if you could just see the beauty,
These things I could never describe,
    These pleasures a wayward distraction,
This is my one lucky prize.

    Isolation, isolation, isolation...

    Lyrics to Ice Age :
    I've seen the real atrocities,
    Buried in the sand,
    Stockpiled safety for a few,
    While we stand holding hands.

I'm living in the Ice age,
I'm living in the Ice age,
    Nothing will hold,
    Nothing will fit,
    Into the cold,
    It's not an eclipse.
    Living in the Ice age,
    Living in the Ice age,
    Living in the Ice age.

    Searching for another way,
    Hide behind the door,
We'll live in holes and disused shafts,
    Hopes for little more.

I'm living in the Ice age,
I'm living in the Ice age,
    Nothing will hold,
    Nothing will fit,
    Into the cold,
    No smile on your lips,
    Living in the Ice age,
    Living in the Ice age,
    Living in the Ice age...

    Lyrics to Disorder :
I've been waiting for a guide to come and take me by the hand,
Could these sensations make me feel the pleasures of a normal man?
These sensations barely interest me for another day,
I've got the spirit, lose the feeling, take the shock away.

It's getting faster, moving faster now, it's getting out of hand,
On the tenth floor, down the back stairs, it's a no man's land,
Lights are flashing, cars are crashing, getting frequent now,
I've got the spirit, lose the feeling, let it out somehow.

What means to you, what means to me, and we will meet again,
I'm watching you, I'm watching her, I'll take no pity from your friends,
Who is right, who can tell, and who gives a damn right now,
Until the spirit new sensation takes hold, then you know,
Until the spirit new sensation takes hold, then you know,
Until the spirit new sensation takes hold, then you know,
I've got the spirit, but lose the feeling,
I've got the spirit, but lose the feeling.
Feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling.
