and he is so very lost........
;) Ok has anyone else had a snake that gets lost with his mouse......I just fed Rios his mouse... he had a strong strike, balled up on it... and then got lost... He tried to eat the mouse by the neck.... he was chewing between the head and the shoulders of the mouse... when that did not work ... he began to sniff all over the mouse trying? to find the head.... took a grab at the back side of the mouse... did not work... and five minutes later has just now got the couse by the head and going to work on having dinner....
Of couse as worried mother, it was harder for me to sit back and not interupt his lost adventure with a mouse.....:taz:
Oh and he is still just a baby... .he is a feb/march 09 hatchling.... but it is the first mouse that he has gotten lost with...
Re: and he is so very lost........
Heck, I still have adults who do that kinda stuff. Glad he finally figured it out.
Re: and he is so very lost........
i saw a video on one doing it the other day. it looks hilarious
Re: and he is so very lost........
Mine goes for the butt almost everytime. Sometimes she gets it that way. I've got a video of her wrestling with it for like an hour. They usually figure out how to get it down somehow.
I have a feeling they're not too smart.;)
It did make me anxious the first time. Took all my self control not to reach in there and "help".
Re: and he is so very lost........
Yeah I know .... I so wanted to "help' him find the head, but I figured that if I reached in he might mistake me for dinner, r would get scared off of his mouse... He at least finally did figure out which side was the head.. He has only managed to get one mouse down backwards, and he did not look to interested in doing that one again....lol.... and it was not too funny for me (today)... I was too worried that he would lose interest in the mouse or would hurt himself trying to get it down....No wonder my five year old son is always looking at me like I am crazy...
Re: and he is so very lost........
Some of mine do it very rarely. I have a buddy whos RTB cannot to save its own life eat a rat the right way. She will take several hours to figure it out. Shes not that bright lol.

LOL my RTB is the same way! The store I got him from had a bearded dragon with a label on his tank "special needs" and I think they forgot my RTB's label! LOL.
Re: and he is so very lost........
Mine has done that a few times. Shes no where near as bad as my tricolored hognose though. He will often sit there and try to swallow a mouse sides ways for a good 5-15 mins. One time he some how missed his ALREADY DEAD mouse and started chewing on himself and it didn't even seem it bother him! It was fun trying to pry his jaws off himself, I was afraid he was going to hurt himself because hognoses have enlarged rear fangs and when they eat something they chew into it with those fangs. He may not be an Einstein among snakes but atleast he makes up for it with his looks.
Re: and he is so very lost........
They do butt first so there's no aftertaste. :P
Re: and he is so very lost........
It happens, but i've never had a snake that couldn't figure it out eventually.

My boy (Toby) did that last week, and we were totally laughing at him! I'm a mean momma, LOL. :D He killed the mouse pretty quickly, and dropped it to get into position for swallowing... then he got a little confused and tried to grab the feet first, then the stomach, and finally figured out where the head was. He looked very confused and silly, but eventually got it under control. I guess they just have "duh" moments like the rest of us, huh?
Re: and he is so very lost........
I've seen that type of behavior several times. They almost always figure it out eventually, even if "figuring it out" means figuring out how to eat the mouse backwards.
One time one of my bigger girls managed to uncoil so that she was on top of the mouse. She was big enough the mouse was totally hidden underneath her; maybe part of the tail stuck out but that was all. So she was looking around trying to find it, and could not. I think she could smell it, because she frequently rubbed her nose against the part of her body that was on top of the mouse, but she apparently couldn't figure out that she needed to move to get to it. Finally she appeared to give up and crawled away and started exploring. Not sure if that exploring was looking for the dead mouse, or just looking for another one to kill. She did eventually find it and eat it.
Re: and he is so very lost........
Mine dropped his in his water bowl. He just looked at me like, "well, are you going to help me out here." I used tongs to drag it out. They get grumpy if they think you are stealing their supper.
It took him awhile to find the head also, since the mouse had cooled of a little. Eventually he firgured it out. :)
Re: and he is so very lost........
That happens with all my snakes... I found the best thing to do, is just not interfere.. Once you know the mouse/rat is dead, leave them alone, and just come back an hour later and the rodent Magically disappears somehow....
Re: and he is so very lost........
Yeah.... thank you all for your words... now I do not feel so bad that he got lost with a mouse.... and I feed him F/T. I do not want to start him on live since he has never eaten live.
