how to catch a rat?
OK so I was feeding and I had a small rat jump out of the tub and ran behind a wall. Now how do I lure this little guy out? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: how to catch a rat?
get a trash can or bucket it wont be able to jump out of. Get a small ladder or ramp leading up to the rim and some tasty smelling food to go inside. he'll go in for the food and not be able to get back out. worked with my hamster, givin rats are smarter, but its worth a try

Re: how to catch a rat?
Umm Maybe leave out some food and a sticky trap or something. Not sure if catching it alive is a priority. not really too versed in this department. Also I think this is the wrong forum for this thread maybe a mod can move it.

Re: how to catch a rat?
You should get those non-stick, little catch and release rat traps, and put them near all exits of the wall...

Let the snake out, too. :P

Re: how to catch a rat?
Thanks guys I put sticky traps everywhere. Hopefully that will do the trick. Alive or dead I just need to catch the guy before my wife gets home!

HAHA, this is too funny. I just got online because not 2 min. ago I dropped the mouse as I was putting him in Mojo's cage and BaMM just like lightning it was gone!
It is now somewhere behind the hot water heater... Damn
Get out the cheese?

I use the live traps and peanut butter.

Re: how to catch a rat?
You can get live traps from Home Depot or Lowes or other similar hardware stores. They're easy to set up, and worked for me every time I had a rodent escape. I got two and set one up at each end of the room the rodent was in, one near each doorway he might have used to move into another part of the house. Anyhow...two was plenty to catch them every time, although it was almost always an overnight endeavor. Once you buy the traps (they're not expensive, but obviously more than a little wooden snap-trap) you'll be very glad you have them on hand in case it happens again.

Re: how to catch a rat?
Good luck catching the rat. My dog is the official mouse catcher (when my asf's get out) my cat doesn't want to be bothered by trying to catch them ::)

Re: how to catch a rat?
I just put 2 sticky traps with peanut butter out so we will see what happens... if all else false I let the doberman loose!

Re: how to catch a rat?
Since I breed rats in a large quantity I may have a couple of tips. First of all rodents always run along walls rarely across open spaces, with their poor eyesight they need to be able to feel where they are going. Sticky traps suck, don't work. They collect dust and they can run across them. If you do manage to get him stuck to it, you have to kill the rat with a blunt object. You cannot rip them off, it will remove fur and skin. I prefer either catching them by hand, with a little coaxing and cornering. If that fails I either use snap traps or a bb gun (bb guns work for shooting PETA supporters too!). I would never use poison in your house has it will dehydrate them and they will die inside a wall. You will have to locate the awful smell they produce. If you can reach the rat the best thing really is to try to sneak up on it and pin it with your palm to the ground. Good luck! :gj:

Re: how to catch a rat?
Ya i'd go with a snap trap no need to catch it live you don't want to feed that thing to your snake anymore. Who knows what it ate while it was in the wall.

Re: how to catch a rat?
I had a big med rat jump and run. I got him cornered behind a dresser I have. I sucked him out with a vacuum cleaner. He was mad as hell and biting the hose he was stuck to. That was also my first attempt at P/K. I had to steam clean the carpet from all the pee and poop that went everywhere... So now as long as they keep eating I will stick with that...

Re: how to catch a rat?
Wow, I want to laugh because the story is funny, but then again I don't want this to happen to me, and it hasn't so far. When I get a mouse from the store to feed my snake I normally open the top of the bag and lay it down so the mouse comes out, instead of sticking my hand in there to grab him and get bit, and when he does I grab him by the tail and pluck him to knock/kill him out and feed to my snake. I need to change the way of letting him out the bag now because one may dash off and get loose, though it would be hard for him to get anywheres.
