I currently have a my baby ball in a 20 gallon. Is that too big? I dont think she feels overwhelmed because she moves around in it often. BTW thats a really nice setup you have there. All I have right now is a bowl with water, a log cave, and paper towel bedding. Hopefully this weekend ill be getting some aspen and a half log.

Incoming reasons why you shouldn't have a half log. I bet there will be a few posts about it. I've read a few and they all say the same thing. You're ball python likes a hide that's snug around her, and a half log can't do that.

You do what works for you.

Generally the half logs are not ideal, because they are so open. A upturned pot or bowl seems to enclose the snake better and thus make them feel more secure.

With your cage, it doesn't look open anyway, but set right on a flat surface, the snakes can still feel very exposed. For beginners with young snakes, usually it's better to use a enclosed hide, rather than a more open one.

Whatever works for you. I just like reccomending the safe route for beginners.

I use half logs on most of mine. But I back one side of the log all the way to the back of the tank, so it is more private for them.

    Nice set up!

Yea, I have one fully enclosed hide in my enclosure and one half log...Simon uses the half log just fine...but I did cover the entrance to it with foliage so he feels pretty secure and hidden in there.

Half logs can be ok if they are small like that one, and there is foliage blocking at least one side of the log entrances.

However, two hides should be provided or the snake will be sacrificing thermoregulation needs for hiding preferences, which can cause stress later on.

Nice cage. I never use live plants for balls, but that can help humidity very nicely too.

I use a half log and Mas loves it. I keep one side close to the glass and then stuff moist moss in that opening. She loves it.
