hatch rite or wrong?
Hey,
I was just wondering if anyone has had experiences with Hatch Rite? Were they good or bad? Was is easy to use? Were there any problems? Was it ready to to right out of the bag?
Sorry for the overwhelmingness of all the questions...just trying to figure out what substrate will work the best for incubating.
Thanks,
-
Re: Hatch Rite?
I have hatched one clutch this year and I have on in the incubator now and I used it with both, the 1st clutch had 100% hatch and the second looks good for a complete hatch.

Was it ready to go right out of the bag? Or did you do something to it first?

Re: Hatch Rite?
i got my very first clutch on hatch rite in the incubator. i think its great - its ready to use right out the bag so there's no mixing. im on day 30 and the eggs are doing fantastic! good luck:gj:

Re: Hatch Rite?
From what I hear... It is ready to use out of the bag for some species like snakes and Geckos... I tried incubating a clutch of Veiled Chameleons a year or so ago in Hatchrite... And lost the entire clutch to drying out and sinking in. Everyone I know who uses them with chameleon eggs has to add water, as the Hatchrite itself just doesn't provide enough moisture. Seeing as how I lost a whole clutch by following the directions on the bag... I will no longer use it. That, and Vermiculite is just soooooo much more affordable. It takes all of 5 mins to mix the water in, and the extra $ you pay for a small bag of Hatchrite just doesn't seem worth it IMO. It's like $14 I believe for a 2lb bag of HR... I bought a 20 lb bag of Vermiculite at home depot for $25 and will have enough to last a lifetime.

Re: Hatch Rite?
I used Hatch Rite this year for my Ball Python eggs and didn't encounter any problems with it. 100% hatch rate.

Re: Hatch Rite?
I use hatchrite, and love it. It is very simple.

Re: Hatch Rite?
I used HatchRite last year for my three clutches, and per the instructions on the bag, if I noticed pre-mature dimpling of the eggs, added a teaspoon of water to the corners of the egg box. I think most people over look that part of the instructions.
I have one clutch incubating on Hatchrite this season, and the other on straight Perlite that I mixed with water. Both clutches are doing great, and the Hatchrite clutch will be cut this coming Sunday (Day 52).
The price is the only reason I switched to Perlite this year, after visiting with Albey Scholl and seeing he uses only Perlite.

This is the big thing for me... The cost difference is incredible. Also I swore that I read the bag up and down and all around and didn't find anywhere where they told you to add water... Not sure if the bag was changed... or If I just somehow missed it... not calling you a liar by any means.
Hatchrite Instructions... Just read through again and can't find anything about adding water.

I don't have the bag any more - and I read it directly from the bag. Bags were purchased last year, so maybe they've changed it?

Re: Hatch Rite?
Yeah, I wont be breeding anywhere near what you guys make, only one or possibly two cluthes a season, so if it works, i'm all for it :). I will definately look in to adding water though, dont want the eggs to be too dry.
Also, I just read the instructions for HatchRite using the link provided, and was just wondering how often to open egg container to allow gas excange? It says once a week, but I think I recall it being more often than that? Help?

Re: Hatch Rite?
I think that Hatchrite is really good for first time breeders who do not want to worry about messing up on mixing water and perlite/ver. together.
Other wise it just costs alot to use if you already know how to make the other stuff perfectly.

Hatchrite is great but a beat pricey here is a cheaper alternative for you where you won’t have to worry about proper mixing: Subtrateless incubation

Thanks,
This is what I do and what has been working for me for those past 2 seasons
You will need
6 quart tub (can be found at walmart, target etc)
Eggcrate (can be found at lowes or homedepot)
Vermiculite or perlite (can be found at your local feed store)
and water
I put 3 cups of vermiculite in a 6 quart tub, I add about 1 and a half cup of water, I mix everything up, I then place a piece of eggcrate (cut to the dimension of my 6 quart tub) on the top of the substrate, place the eggs on the eggcrate and close the lid (I do not use any glad press & seal, I just use the lead)

Thanks for the title change deborah :)

Re: hatch rite or wrong?
This is my first year doing substrateless incubation. So far I love it! I have no problems mixing vermiculite but I'm super lazy! :) I've used Hatchrite for Leo eggs with good success.

Re: hatch rite or wrong?
I have not yet done BP eggs... but when I do I plan to use the substrateless method. For my corn and king eggs, I have always used moist paper toweling and for those guys that works very well for me.
