I'm proud of myself & sad all at once..

Well as you guys know I got my first BP (and first REAL snake) 2weeks ago..

it is 3 years old..

previous owner told me it had been sexed and was a female and her name is Meerah...

I was cleaning out her tub and giving her fresh water today and she was in a cuddly mood (I know I know snakes arent cuddly).. but she wanted to explore...
So we hung out for a bit..

And I realized she is a HE!!!!!!!

2 little cat claw looking things coming out of HIS tail end....

So I am sad she is a he, but I am pretty proud of myself for knowing what those little "things" were and being able to determine his true sex :D



Any new name suggestions though for the poor guy named Meerah? LOL

Those are spurs, males and females have them

The only reliable ways to sex your BP is by popping or probing

Try finding someone near you that can do that for you and show you are to do it as well.

Yep, as deb said, both males and females have butt-claws. :P

i think he goes a bit overboard with the probe. lol :( but atleast you can get a very good look at what he's doing.

Just want to mention that if you don't know what to do, either by popping or probing, PLEASE have someone experienced show you how it's done. You can seriously injure your pet if it's done the wrong way. As well, popping works best with babies, as adults/sub-adults often will not pop correctly, so it's best to have them probed.

I'm like Ralph, I don't even probe any more. I'd have to look for my probe kit at this time. I don't have any problems popping adult males.

But, I don't see any problems with how he's probing.

I do not know how, nor would try probing a poor little defenseless snake myself ;)
I will have to take it to the amazing reptile/amph vet around here and have him do it (Dr Fitzgerald)

Along with the new baby I just got LOL... oops, these things are addicting.. but the new one isn't a BP...

Well it always starts with one then you have 10, 15, 20, 25, 28 at least thats how it worked with me. lol.

Are you talking about THE Dr. Fitzgerald, from the E-Vet show!? If so, and I'm assuming it is since I know he's in CO - that's AWESOME. That guy is amazing, and I'm a huge fan. My dream is to be an e-vet, and special in reptiles. :)

Kevin Fitzgerald is the GREATEST guy! He's my snake vet as well, he and another gentleman at a clinic closer to me. :D He's the busiest man I've ever met, but he's kind and understanding at the same time.

Yes, all BPs have those spurs...and yes, they can be rather confusing to the new owner. :) Don't feel too let down.

I saw the pics of that new King, and it is a real cutie. :) Have lots of fun with that one!
