Reptile building???
Does anyone here keep there animals in buildings outside instead of rooms in there houses? Me and my fiance are looking at a house now that we are thinking about moving into and it has a building that would be perfect for my animals I think. I just have to figure out how to get it working with heat and air and everything. I was just wondering if anyone else does this and could give me some pointers. thanks

Re: Reptile building???
for heat i would say a couple oil heaters, and a window unot for a/c..eugene besset has his in a concrete building, but were in fla so always warm enough for heat cable to do ya

Re: Reptile building???
Yea Ive been trying to find out an estimate for a whole central heat and air system but its a very large building lol. So I dont think its going to be cheap
-
Re: Reptile building???
May be a little on the cheap side, but they make those IN-WINDOW coolors, for the hot months, and oil heaters in the cold???

Re: Reptile building???
How tall is the building, how long, is it insulated? Things like this would factor in to what you can do.
If you have a tall building a window unit would not work because of air flow, they make portable AC/heating units that you can run round flex duct.
If it is like an insulated garage or shed a window unit would work great with an oil heater.

Re: Reptile building???
Well there are no windows in it at the moment. We were thinking of adding one or two though. It is a very large building Ill get pics of it once it stops raining. It is insulated but I was thinking of maybe insulating it once more and adding drywall to keep it more insulated. Another problem is it has concrete bottom so I would have to raise the cages way up off the floors to keep the floor from making them cold.
It would be amazing though to get my house back lol. If I didnt have reptiles inside we would have SO much more room

Re: Reptile building???
instead of raiging them a lot, raise them 3 incheas, and put a piece of 3 inch heat tape on the floor,,this way you dont have cold floor directly under your caging

I am a project manager for a commercial heating/air conditioning company here in Chicago. We do alot of schools, police stations, fire stations all that kind of junk. Maybe I can give you some ideas when you get some pictures up

Re: Reptile building???
Rakk that would be great if you could. Im actually going to try to go over there tonight and get pics of it to post. I would love to be able to turn this into a building for my animals not only would it give me a lot of extra room in the house it would also make it possible for me to expand my collection. But I need to make sure the temps can be maintained at all times before I put them outside.
It would also get the inlaws off my back about the snakes eating there grandkids!

Re: Reptile building???
that thought has crossed my mind numerous times lol. They seem to believe if by some chance the snakes actually got out of there cages then got out of the locked room the first thing on there mind would be to eat the kids. Completly pass by the dog and cats and go straight to the children lol

Re: Reptile building???
another idea,,,is one company,,completely forgot who right off the top of my head, makes a unit, its similar to regular central heat and air, using a large unit outside, but mainly to control smaller units that hook to it,so you dont need to run completely duct work and such

Re: Reptile building???
Maybe I can find out who that is. That would work perfect. I tried to get pics but its still raining. Ill get them first thing in the morning.

Re: Reptile building???
We keep ours in a Building on our Land, works great, we've got a better heating and a/c system than our house in it lol.
Heres a link to our original thread we posted and a few updated pictures.

We finished the inside of a wood frame barn with metal siding. This is before anything was done, except concrete prep.

It's definatly alot of work but well worth it when you are thinking of the future.

Re: Reptile building???
That looks alot like the one we are wanting to use. Ours already has the concrete and it has insulation behind the wood framing so you cant see the metal but I dont know how good the insulation is. Yours looks great though I would love to know more about you guys went through with all that. I would love to have something like that

Re: Reptile building???
Aren't you scared of people stealing your stuff Danny? I am always afraid of that. I don't have much but what I have I want if you know what I mean. Maybe I am just paranoid-lol. I feel safer with the animals in the house with a security system and dogs. But I can understand wanting to free up room in your house and getting the larger pythons away from your kids :gj:

Re: Reptile building???
actually Ive already been down that road. We had our house broken into last year while we were at a reptile show. And they took my favorite animal. It had to of been someone I knew because they knew exactly what they were looking for. But this building has a security system hooked up to it. And also the dog kennels will be directly across the yard from the building. Most people dont even know I own snakes anymore. I dont tell alot of people and the only people that would ever see what is in that building is someone I really trust. I use to post adds in the paper here for a snake I was trying to move and Id let them come out to the house and pick it up and everything and I just dont do that anymore because you cant trust anyone.
