    Denied renters insurance!!!!!............
And, the reason is, because we have snakes. No, I'm not kidding. Apparently if someone were to see we have snakes it could cause mental anguish. They would purposely break into our house and steal our stuff to get back at us. Apparently they are a liability, and people can get killed.

WTF!!!! Has anyone else experienced this with an insurance company? And what are some other places I could try?

I found it quite amusing, other than the fact I can ensure my stuff.

I didn't mention my snakes on my renter's insurance - I don't remember if I was even asked to list animals - mine is as a rider on my car insurance (Traveler's).

Well, I can't seem to help to mention mine. Every time I'm in a conversation with someone, it's the first words to come out of my mouth after hello, "Guess what my snake did!" lol.

They are still new for me, and I love talking about them. I'm trying to get into the habit of realizing, not everyone wants to hear about my snakes. lol. This being one of those times.

The lady did tell me to gather some information on them, to show her they aren't an aggressive species, since a 12 ft. anaconda seems to come to her mind. At least she is trying to work with me. Must not be the first time she's had a complaint.

Keep it to yourself next time!

And, don't feel bad, someone crashed into my property causing about $3K in damage and his insurance company won't cover the damage because "their client had a sudden unforseen medical emergency" and is "therefore not responsible for the damage."

I checked with my insurance company, and my lawyer, and they both tell me that insurance companies in Massachusetts no longer have to cover damages resulting from unforseen medical situations while driving.

Gee I wonder if anyone in this state will ever have another accident that ISN'T the result of an unforseen medical condition? I know I won't. Sorry officer, I had an unforseen medical condition, can I go now?

I use Allstate for my car insurance as well as renters. They won't cover the snakes. BUT, they are covering all my AP cages and my thermostats/heaters. So, better than nothing.

We were denied last year. But at first it wasnt for our snakes it was for one of our dogs. They thought she was dangerous and then started asking about other animals we had. I wasnt going to say anything but my son riley blurted out you want to see my snakes lol. So I know how you feel

My wife made the mistake of telling the insurance guy about my snakes. He said he needed to check and see the setup and make sure it was safe and secure. Boy was he surprised when he entered my basement.
Dozens of snakes. Dozens of giant geckos. Hundreds of rats and a big tortoise.
After the shock of the initial entering the room he looked around and said "looks good to me".
But we own our home not renting.
I tried to show him how non dangerous they were but i think he is scared of reptiles.

I'm pretty sure State Farm is the way to go for renters/home owners insurance. That's who we will be going with when we buy a home in the next year...evidently they are one of the only companies to not have any breed specific rules. I own a pit bull, he's a certified therapy dog and visits children in schools...but you tell that to just about any insurance agent and all they will hear is "I have a pit bull, he goes and eats children in schools." I have never heard of an insurance company denying someone because of their pet snakes though. Guess anything is possible. Hope you find an insurance company!

Don't expect the world to change to meet your lifestyle.

Find a new insurer and move on.

I have State Farm. I've been with them ever since my first car at 16 (I'm 31). I set up my renters insurance via email. They never even asked about pets, in fact, they didn't really ask much of anything other than how much coverage I wanted.

I see it most w/ dog owners (as said in an earlier post by sugarfox)
But I end up being able to have recommendations from state dep and us f&W, and the vet we use. Just having statements from your herpvets go a long way I must say. I'm lucky w/ insurance co. and have never had issues while renting. But I am a bit tough (strong headed some might say..lol) I'm always up front, in the end it saves from being hassled etc
Just try a different co. And you may luck out having your vet write a reccomendation. It does go a long way.
    good luck
