I'm released today - Guess who?
NFL star Vick leaves prison for home confinement

    Quote:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP)—Suspended NFL star Michael Vick(notes) left a Kansas prison before dawn Wednesday to begin home confinement in Virginia, one of his attorneys said, the latest step on a journey that Vick hopes will lead to his reinstatement.

Vick, who turns 29 in June, slipped past waiting cameras and reporters undetected to leave a federal penitentiary in Leavenworth after serving 19 months for financing a dogfighting ring. He was headed to Virginia by car to begin two months of home confinement at his five-bedroom house in Hampton before a scheduled released from federal custody on July 20.

He was accompanied by his fiance, Kijafa Frink, and they were traveling back to Virginia with several members of a security team arranged for by Vick’s team of lawyers and advisers, a person familiar with the plans told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

From what I hear he is hitting the gym hard starting today to get back into shape.

I think in the coming weeks he meets with the NFL commissioner. The commish said if he senses genuine remorse he will be allowed to play.

Agreed. They should have the guts to make sure he never plays for anyone again. EVER. I don't care if he does seem like he regrets it, he only regrets getting caught. You either feel animal cruelty is wrong or you don't. Being punished for it doesn't change your mind.

I don't really agree with that but I don't believe he should be able to play.

It's really hard to feel sorry for this guy whose claiming bankruptcy but wants to keep his three cars and two homes. Thank goodness the judge rejected his bankruptcy plan last month.

Personally I doubt he'll play again but who knows. I know I'll certainly not be encouraging my children to watch any team that would field a player that thought it was just a fine thing to abuse animals and force them into fighting situations.

He has had nothing else to do besides hitting the gym hard for quite a while. You can bet that the Commissioner will sense genuine remorse.

No kidding, I hope they video tape the meeting so we can all see how "genuine" it is.

As despicable as animal cruelty is, I don't believe in punishment imposed by society, especially after completion of jail time.

He was sentanced and carried out that sentance. I don't care what he does with the rest of his life, but I don't think that he has any less of a right to be hired to play football as anyone else out there.

i dont agree with what he did and will never look at him the same way again. but he has done his time and has every right to work, may it be at mc donalds or in the nfl. people break the law everyday and for every law that is broke there is a group that hates them just the same way people hate vick for what he did.

thats what is so great about this country we are givin 2nd chances for stupid mistakes

You folks do make some great points about him having served his time and all that. It's hard I guess seeing past those poor dogs but that's a reaction of the heart really. The man did do his time and I guess (no matter how much his actions sicken me) that he does deserve to be employed in whatever field he can find work in.

People make mistakes. I believe everyone deserves a second chance. He made a mistake and hopefully he is learning from it. He has a lot to offer the NFL and I actually do hope he plays again.

Heres a question for everybody, but more so toward those saying not to let him play again,if you found out well known people selling animals on king snake, were convicted of animal smuggling,or pleased guilty to conspiracy of smuggling, would you still buy from them?

    Nope.

That is though, to be fair, a very apples to oranges comparison.

Vick was not convicted of something directly related to his employment as a football player. He didn't fix games or something like that. Smuggling reptiles when you are in the business of selling reptiles is a whole different ball of wax, at least to my mind.

i do agree with you,and i really should of posed that question in a thread of its own, somehow in my mixed up mind at the time i thought it made sense?,possibly due to me reading a report of a breeder advertising on ks currently, running out of the country to try and avoid being arrested, and it not working, and now hes back breeding and selling,,just the "paid thier debt to society"thing came to mind....

pretty much trying to strong arms him"we will boycott any game and team who signs you,if you dont do this, and we will sick our protesters all over you like,,well,,for lack of better terms,,rabid pitbulls"

The thing about the entertainment industry, is that it requires both positive and many times negative sidelines to stay in the limelight. Winning the superbowl is great and all, but how many people can name off the last 10 teams who've won it, compared to the number of people who know who Michael Vick is? The NFL will take him back, and everyone is gonna watch the games in which Vick plays hoping to see some cheap hits laid out on him. The negative publicity actually draws people to the sport. Not for the true essence of the sport. But to watch and hope they find something on the screen that justifys his presence in the sport. Whether it be true remorse, or an elbow to the juggular...

Personnally I don't believe he should be allowed back into the sport. In my mind sports stars should be idols, not thugs. But he has the potential to sell too many tickets, too many tabloids, he just has too much free publicity to just let him go.

Because it was probably a well hidden term of his sentence to do something of this nature involving a Humane Society... and who doesnt love a reform story of a well known former dog fighter, crying his eyes out asking for people to love their pets, versus that scary PETA lady demanding you set your pets free?

I can respect all views- we each have the right to our opinion.

    Here's mine:

    "May he rot forever"

I could never, ever look past this or support someone who brutally kills, neglects, and abuses animals as being in a position of influence and a potental role model for children.

    Yuck, yuck, and yuck.

People in sports should never be looked at as role models because of achievements on the field. You can acknowledge talent and ability even when you hate a person.

A professional football player is no more a role model because of job performance than my coworkers.

but are your coworkers on TV? do they have 5 cars and 3 mansions? It's not the moral qualities kids idolize, it's the success, and often... the renegade lifestyle... growing up did you ever play cowboys and indians? vigilante (or street) justice typically ends up in kids playtime for this reason.

While I agree they SHOULD NOT be role models, the fact is they are. Sports stars are heros to countless kids and even adults.

I can't change that fact, as much as I'd sometimes like to do so. It's part of taking on a job of that nature; it's a responsibility. If you don't want that responsibility, then do something else IMHO.

People break the law and make stupid mistakes. If they do that, they should be made to pay for their mistakes and punished for their crimes. But once they've paid their price or completed their punishment they should be allowed a 2nd chance.

However, a 2nd chance doesn't necessarily mean that your life goes on as if nothing happened. It SHOULD be tough to regain the life and privileges you had before your mistake but you should at least have the opportunity to try. I just hope nobody makes it too easy for him just because they see him as a cash cow and a means to enrich themselves.

I'm still shaking my head about this HSUS spokesman thing though. I still think that's just nuts.

When this whole thing started with him HSUS said they would take and care for the dogs that were confiscated from Vic which they never did. There is definitely an ulterior motive working here.

Then they should sentence him to work the local shelters bathing animals & cleaning pens, not as a spokesperson.

He should be allowed to play. Not because he deserves, but because it would be a double standard. There are convicted murderers (convicted of manslaughter) playing in the NFL right now. To not let him play is saying while allowing those other guys i saying the animal life is more important than human life.

I don't think it's a mistake to purposely sick innocent dogs on each other for amusement and betting purposes, just to watch them rip out each others trachea and spinal cords.

It's not a mistake, he made a choice, one that puts him far lower than the dogs killing each other.
IMO, I don't think that man should ever be near a CHILD let alone an animal.

    Lisa,

i agree,he should be doing actual hours there as well, and iw atched a special about the place who took care of most of the vick dogs,,which makes me wonder, since they did the work, why doesnt he work with them, instead of hsus,i just think hsus sees this a chance to have a big name in thier back pocket,to do what they want,so they are siezing it.i do know he also will be working a construction job for 10 dollars an hour as well, now in all fairness,if he was back in the league, that would open that job for somebody else who really needs it.i think a lot is going in them talks that nobody knows, maybe he decided to do it,becuse they promised if he does what they want, they will spearhead a campaign to get him back in the league or something,i do know when he did one thing for them that they wanted,as soon as it was released, they blasted him the next day saying it wasnt enough, and wasnt what he said he would do,,so they will be screwing with him for years
