Well I did it...
I broke down and got a 60qt tub for her. She's no longer in the glass enclosure. Thank You everyone for your help. Lets hope she's happier in the tub than she is in her tank... :)

Re: Well I did it...
Quick question guys. As this says I just got a tub but now I'm realizing I'm having a hard time keeping the ambient temp above 71. I live in CO and my house is normally about 73-77 so the temp in my room isn't high enough to keep the ambient up. I have an extra uth from the tank I had her in. If I put that on the top (connected to the thermometer of course) would that help raise the temp? Would it do the same thing if I put it on the bottom?

Good question I am in the same sort of boat. I live in Pa but have my rack in my room in the basement which cool. My cool end temp never goes over like 75-77 but where I have the hot side it is perfect at around 92-93 degrees. I am curios as to how we can get the ambient temps up myself.

I still have my che that I used with the aquarium, could I mount it above the tub? That would essentially be the same thing as the heater only a more centralized zone of heating.

Me too! My wife is already a little angry cause I have 7 snakes 5ft from our bed! LOL I think if I put a heater in our room for the snakes and she had to sleep in a sauna she would go over the edge! LOL

your first problem is you have more than one female to fight with about the heat;)
you can just put a 2nd uth under the cool side to bring the temp up to where you need

Ok but how would that work with my thermostat?? Either it will turn on/off with the thermostat or be on at max constantly.

just hook it up to your thermostat you might need to add a dimmer so its a bit cooler than the other side tho. or use a smaller uth, ive done both and have worked great

Re: Well I did it...
Hey, would you mind posting a picture of your tub setup? I have 3 bp's, 2 in tanks. One of the ones in the tanks may get moved to a tub this week. I wanted to see how you did just the one tub.

Not sure if you were asking me but this is my setup that I just built about a week or two ago.

I hope this helps you with your question if not just ask and I can try and explain better or take a few better pics.

I've seen yours and want to build a rack similar when I have the need to put everyone in a tub..
But VegaBP, what does your single, non-rack (I'm assuming), tub look like?

Re: Well I did it...
Why did you get such a big tub? usually a 42qt is the MAX tub size, and that is for a full grown female.

I wanted it to be high enough so she could get in and out of her water bowl with ease, so its seven inches tall. I have two 8 inch terr-cotta pot-bottom hides, and her water bowl. That's a lot of floor space that they take up, so I got the more flat, long tub. It seems to be the perfect size. She can reach her water bowl without getting out of either hide completely and everything fits well. :)

Re: Well I did it...
FYI, you aren't going to be able to bump ambient temps up with a UTH. You might be able to gain a couple of degrees but nothing substantial. That is the drawback of tub setups, or rack setups because there is no way to really bump ambient temps up without making adjustments to the room. In a nutshell whatever temp the room is the tub is going to be. 75 degress really isn't a problem IMO for these guys. Thats what my room averages during the cold season. Also you said something about keeping your room at 90 degrees which is kind of crazy lol. The most IMO is low 80's. You figure in the wild these guys are in rodent dens all day, and aren't out basking like lizards do. I think people stress ambient temps too much with balls. Also, I notice some of mine like it a little cooler. My one ball always stays on the cool end for the most part. And all my temps are thermostat controlled so its not too hot. So shoot for mid 70's if its a problem.

Re: Well I did it...
Hi,
I'm not sure that's escape proof with just the weights on the corners - I would try and get some binder clips and put at least 4 if not 6 on the top and rim to make sure there are no spots with "give".
These snakes are amazing escape artists and really strong when they get a bit of leveradge. I would be really worried she forced the middle of the lid at one side up and either got out or hurt herself trying.

Re: Well I did it...
Yea I tried the extra uth for a few hours last night and nothing changed so I unplugged it and I mounted my che about a foot above the tub and now its sitting steady at 77 inside the tub. So it worked much better. Plus the che is far enough away that its not effecting the tub (melting it or warping) so its working perfectly now.

Binder clips!! Like those big black ones you see in an office? That is a great idea! I happen to have a bunch of those! Thank You Doc!
I couldn't find a tub with a sufficient locking lid. After going to too many stores I settled for this one. But I guess I didn't even think about the center. That is why its so great to have this site.

good idea! That should be good, but if you ever plan on increasing your collection and get a rack, the CHE wont be an option. Glad you fixed the problem though.
