Newbie
Just got a ball python...first time. I have experience with lizards (fat tail geckos, lacertas, anoles, house gecko's, iguana, flat rocks) all my life, so its not too hard for me...I saw this ball, at a petshop for sale, had no idea why it was so cheap (supposedly the breeder was trying to get rid of them) I know i took a chance but now I'm wondering...Do Balls have personalities?
Okay he did a few things that i'm not familiar with, and I guess a few things i did, that i wasn't suppose to do:
I was playing with him the first day, and he didn't seem to mind,
He even got comfortable that I can pet his head...
He seems to want to be out of the tank at all times and I have not seen him roll into a ball yet...
As he's hanging around on my bed he's on my belly and does this cobra position, and he just starts looking around...
And oddly he ate yesterday...(and took a sip of water!)(which i also handled him today...i know i know, but he's like my little puppy)
He seldom gets frightened and I kinda get the feeling he likes to be petted
Any advice as to why he's acting like a dog? As I see it ofcourse...

Re: Newbie
They are pretty docile as far as snakes go, but its probably best to let him be in his enclosure for a week or so to adjust.
Depending on his size you have to consider the size of his cage, but generally its best not to overdo it on the size, as they like to feel private and secure.
Just be sure you have the right temperature gradient and humidity, if you are unfamiliar with the requirements there are loads of threads around here with a lot of good information.
Congrats on your first snake, and enjoy! :snake:

Re: Newbie
My boyfriend has two female sisters that have never been in a cage,... they run around his room, sleep in his bed.. .the whole nine yards... they actually encouraged me to get my new little baby ball python.. and it prefers to hang out behind the monitor for my computer, then anywhere else.

Hi,
How on earth do you keep the humidity and temps in the right range when doing that?

Well I know when I was very young my mother had a large boa of some sort that roamed the house. I can't remember if it had an actual cage somewhere or not.
I suppose they just go wherever seems warmest, probably not a good idea at all to encourage such behavior, though. I can easily imagine a snake crawling into a heat register or something else like that.

I would be very careful about the back of the computer monitor, I have actually burnt my own hand on one.

They have just always been like that with him.. i Know that he has an electric blanket on teh bed for the girls, lights and heat is on timers, ect.. they have never had any issues with shedding or any thing else.......
My little baby stays in the 55 gal tank the majority of the time, I just bring it out in the evenings after my son goes to bed to hang out with me, And i have a flat screen monitor that it hangs out behind that does not put off really any heat.

Re: Newbie
The number ratio tells if the snake is male or female, and how many the person has.
For example, if a person had two male bp's, and one female, it would look like this.
2.1 normal balls
Hope that helps...
