Do lemon pastels fade out the same way normal pastels do?
I've been going through the Kingsnake Classifieds every day looking for a decent priced morph. Not much luck, hehe, most high-quality morphs are out of my price range.
Anyways, I saw some nice-looking lemon pastel babies of decent prices. However, I really don't want them to fade out like normal pastels. Are lemons any different?
Re: Do lemon pastels fade out the same way normal pastels do?
Lemons generally keep their color pretty well. I'll look to see if I have a pic of a baby lemon with an adult. Think I have a pic of a future pairing somewhere....
Re: Do lemon pastels fade out the same way normal pastels do?
Here's my adult male with a young female lemon (together for pics only) I think he has held his color pretty well as he's pushing 2yrs old.

If you want and animal that won't fade you need to find one that is a screamer when its young. Bright yellows, the brighter the better. Here's my lemon. Couple of pics from oldest to newest....

Edit: The third picture his head looks funny, little patch of missing scales from a shed. In the 3rd picture he's 3 1/2 years old.

Re: Do lemon pastels fade out the same way normal pastels do?
Thanks, guys! Those are some amazing snakes!
What do you think of these? (I'd want the male.) Nowhere near as bright as yours, but they've got some nice colors.

Re: Do lemon pastels fade out the same way normal pastels do?
If you are serious about wanting a really nice Lemon Pastel, I would contact Andy at NERD and see if he has anything. There are lots of breeders here who may have some avail. Maybe post a wanted ad in the classifieds?
The ones in the ad are attractive snakes for sure, but since you seem to want it to hold color I would look elsewhere. That's just my opionion though. If you really like the snakes then go for it!:)
Re: Do lemon pastels fade out the same way normal pastels do?
The snakes in the ad are nice, but in my opionion any pastel that has a lot of brown/orange along the back will eventually brown out more than a snake that was nice and bright when it was young. I also paid higher than market value for my snake, quality comes at a price.

:eyepoppin Where was the sunglasses warning?? I know what's on my early christmas list. :)
Re: Do lemon pastels fade out the same way normal pastels do?
To be fair there are great examples of all the pastel lines. You just need to look long enough and find a breeder thats big into their selective breeding for the desired look you want in an animal.
I immediately think of Albey when I think of amazing pastels. He works with the Graziani line and they are gorgeous as well.

Thanks! I'll look into some nicer ones.
Robin, those are some amazing snakes!!
Re: Do lemon pastels fade out the same way normal pastels do?
also, when you use kingsnake, you may already be aware but make sure that the snake pictured is the snake for sale. They could show a GREAT looking pastel but then ship you a very browned one and say they were just posting an example of what they were selling....like i said, you may already know this, but just makin sure =P

Try Rusty Balls, i just got a female from them, not bad. They have a killer male breeder.
Re: Do lemon pastels fade out the same way normal pastels do?
Hmm, looking at these pictures of adult lemon pastels...I'm starting to think SunSpot (the rescued pastel) might be a lemon! He still has amazing color and he's nearly 2 years old! Man...wouldn't that be something. :D
Re: Do lemon pastels fade out the same way normal pastels do?
Any pastel can brown out. I would buy the snake, not the line. Lemons can have nice coloration but not all are the same quality
Re: Do lemon pastels fade out the same way normal pastels do?
I agree with what other people have said. Buy the individual snake and not the line. For example, I have a male pastel, pictured first, who has browned out along his spine. Second, I have a female Pastel that hasn't browned out much at all. They are both from different lines, with the female being more 'blonde' in color than the male.
Male around 300 grams:

Male now (850 grams):

Female around 500 grams:

Female now (1250 grams):

Notice that the male had a lot more brown along his spine as a baby than the female.
