    Please take a look
Took him out to spray down his tub with PAM and give him a soak and noticed his head was swollen. I just fed him a pretty healthy sized rat just 2 days ago and he's been left alone since.

This was the first time he's eaten in almost 2 months since I've been injecting him with Amikacin for a really nasty R.I.

It looks like he's got a possible bite mark on the top of his nose, I tried to get good pictures but he wouldn't stay still. As I said I fed him a pretty good sized med. rat and he had to work at eating it but he did none the less. Was wondering if anyone else has seen this and can make me feel better. Guess I'll be taking him to the vet, again.

    Thanks

A side shot, I can't tell if the swelling is more from the lower jaw, its very unpleasant to look at. I hate that animals don't show pain like we do.

More from the front, its a little easier to see the swelling from this angle.

Here's the underside, again looks like some swelling, I'm wondering is maybe he didn't reset his jaw correctly?

    I'll throw these out there...
    1) He may have stuck the tank during feeding.

    2) have you checked the inside of his mouth to see if anything is going on in there with that lower jaw?

Looks like he over extended his jaw. Is that the same snake you fed that over sized rat to? That rat was way to big that is why he spit it out!

    Hi,

Since the swelling looks quite bad (and seems to run down his neck slightly? ) in the last pic I would book another vet visit for him to make sure nothing has gotten infected.

It sounds like the poor guy has had a rough time of it lately. :(

Yeah no kidding....I had him on fortaz for a R.I, apparently a later culture revealed his strain was resistant to it, then they switched him to another drug (amikacin) and he's pretty much recovered now this. BTW the rat wasn't THAT big, like the one I fed him a while back. My wife thinks I should chop his head off  since I've spend about 12 time what I paid for him to get him better. It is a little frustrating. I've already left a msg. with Stahl to get me in ASAP. Thanks guys

What a horrible thing for her to say! Chop off his head... poor guy. I wonder if she'd say to chop off a puppy's head?

I think a vet visit is probably in order, it may be fluid buildup from a wound, or he could have damage to the bones of his lower jaw... really hard to tell when it's just pictures.

I hope he gets better, sometimes critters just have the worst luck!

Little perspective on cost of care and ball python pet..................

    Start with a purebread dog.......

    400 cost
    400 vet first year
    annual food 360-400 dollars
2000-3000 in ruined carpet and chewing first year...

hmmmm 10 times as much first year alone then cost to buy lol:)

oh yeah yearly yard fix for dead spots 100....I could keep going lol....

Although a normal may cost 50 bucks I think in the long run much cheaper then a dog in all around cost lol....heck both of our dogs are adopted from humane society so they were free and cost us quite a bit each year in food vet damage etc etc lol....Tell her in reality you are way ahead...the fact that minimal chance for peeing on the floor is worth it alone:)

chill out guys I think she was joking...well sort of. I think she said it because one night I hate to take the snake to the emergency vet and the tech. there said it was pretty likely that my snake was going to have to be put down. Glad I don't go there! So when I told my wife that he suggested that if that was the case that she'd get a shovel and do it for me.

I'm going to talk to the vet tommorrow and see what he tells me to do. I'm wondering if he was so hungry from not eating that he was willing to hurt himself to eat...the thing that confuses me is that I've fed him rats that were bigger. Anyway thanks again.

That snake needs to get to a vet NOW. It looks like he has a nasty infection brewing from the way the swelling is going down the neck. I would skip chatting with the vet on the phone and just bring him in. Chances are the vet's going to want to see him anyways before making a diagnosis.

I took him the the vet yesterday (mon.). Vet showed me still alot of mucus in the back of his mouth (adema?) and it look like he's swallowing air. So luckily I have more amikacin so back the injection every 3 days, plus an anti steroid anti inflammitory injection every day for next 5 days. Apparently very nasty bug he's got but doc seems to think he'll be ok.
