    Belly patterns
While wasting my time at lunch today I happened into my local Petco. I like to just check out the overpriced normal’s they sell. Anyway I saw that one of their new normal’s (got to be 09's and pretty young at that) had an interesting color pattern. I took some pic's on my cell, but they look like A$$ (sorry) she had normal color pattern except for a very light peach colored sides that stopped halfway up (looked like a C quality pastel) getting mildly excited I asked to see her, hoping for a clear belly. Unfortunately, no luck she had a pretty normal belly. So, to my question: In looking for unique/inheritable traits what should I look for as signs that could tell me that a snake is worth proving out? As for this girl, I'm debating snagging her anyway, worst case scenario I spend $80 to save her from Petco!

Most of the animals you see at petstores will be normals. Its very unlikely you will find a visual morph there. The exporters in africa have gotten quite good at identifying the "special" looking animals and are usually sold to private parties.

I figured that, but sometimes you see something unusual and I’d like to know what signs to look for that indicate it might be worth proving out.

I think that will keep you busy for a while.

Could be viewed as slightly unfair due to the variation in normals

No normals don't suck, we just want him to get a HEALTHY animal. Some breeders offer up male normals for free to people who can provide them a good home just for the cost of shipping. If you wait a couple months I'm sure you will see many such ADs here.

At least in my area they seem to get a lot of them from local breeders. Obviously the "special" ones aren't going to go to the pet store for $25.

I personally wouldn't waste $80 on a normal, your luck it will turn out to be male, check out expos/shows in your area, you won't have to wait much longer!!! I got my normal male for $15 as an expo and my normal female came free with my male pastel. If your going to spend $80 on a normal, you might as well spend $100 on a pastel.

I think you should have bought the spider male from me. I suspected him to maybe have wobbling tendancies, but time has proven him otherwise. He's a nice snake! Jason Bowden

Did I ask you about a spider?? Its been a few month since I was looking for one... I have a 1.0 spider that I picked up from WestCoast Jungle (awesome snake) and a 0.1 ciny (that I snagged from ClassReptilia), looking for female pastels at the moment. Just happed on that one at Petco and I was supprised from the coloration...

Sounds like you've started a nice collection!
I've seen pastels at our local petco also. And I have to say they did look nice.
Back to your original topic. I think if you run into an exceptional looking ball python with a clear belly, some eye brows may be raised. I've made some double takes(looked hard at them and thought of purchasing them for some new breeding stock) at ball pythons at petco and pets smart. Jason Bowden
