Do you let them soak or not??
Well do you give them a large enough water source to soak or not. I know this is a debated thing. Some have great success without and some with.

Re: Do you let them soak or not??
If you're able to provide a large enough "pond" for them to get some swimming in, that's probably a good thing right? I mean these guys like to swim all the time in the wild.

Re: Do you let them soak or not??
Ive always let me anaconda have a water bowl big enough to submerge in.
-
Re: Do you let them soak or not??
Alot of animals can do ok without things. That doesn't mean its right not to have them just because they can survive without.
For anacondas I think everyone should provide them with a bowl big enough to soak in, they spend so much time in the water in the wild. It seems ignorant NOT to have a large water bowl in their enclosure.
but hey, im no expert.

Re: Do you let them soak or not??
Who put "I dehydrate them, no water at all" seriously?!

Re: Do you let them soak or not??
I agree 110 percent with zach. Theres tons of people that agree anacondas do not need water to soak in to survive and im sure they dont but I think when you take on the responsibilty of having a anaconda then you should give it something to soak in. In the wild they are in the water almost all the time so why take that from then in the first place. Most people who keep them say they dont provide water large enough to soak because they go to the bathroom in it and it will contain bacteria. Well of course they use the bathroom in it and there could be bacteria in the water. But theres a very simple solution to that and that is clean it! I clean mine every night and if you think that is to much then maybe you should get another snake that doesnt really like water. Its like having a water monitor and not ever giving them water. The species were designed to swim and they love it. My conda rarely leaves her water and I would feel horrible if I took what she loves so much away from her! Just my 2cents

Re: Do you let them soak or not??
I've never seen an anaconda out of the water, if given somewhere big enough to soak in. (well not NEVER, but very rarely)
They must really like it.
Also have you ever seen a full grown anaconda out on land? Talk about an awkward looking snake. They are so freaking heavy and it just looks uncomfortable having their sheer mass not being suspended and help up in the water.

That is actually not try, greens will spend majority of their time in the water, but a yellow however will not, some will some won't, it just varies. The reason greens sit in the water alot is to help support body weight and not on them. A yellow doesn't need to sit in water as it doesnt get as big or heavy as a green. My yellow doesn't really sit in the waterbowl alot, but I catch her in it sometimes. She has the a huge water bowl also.

Re: Do you let them soak or not??
thats interesting neal when I had my yellow he very rarely went into the water also but my green stays in it.

Doh I was only talking about greens, sorry!

Re: Do you let them soak or not??
LOL, it's no problem, I figured you were talking about greens.
Yea denial greens are so massive that they stay in the water pretty much all the time, unless it really gets hot then they'll go on land to go hide or something, but they are slow on land and really quick in the water for their massive size. Yellows on the other hand don't get big or massive in weight like the green can get that's why we never see our yellows in the water, I have seen some yellows that like water more, but it's when they start getting a bit up on the weight scale.

Re: Do you let them soak or not??
I don't keep anaconda's... but.... If you are keeping a species of snake that is even partially aquatic... why the heck would you deny it the right to soak/swim?!?!
-
Re: Do you let them soak or not??
Greens like it, not all yellows do.
-
Re: Do you let them soak or not??
I've had both yellows & Greens (more greens, large greens) into rescue. I've given my yellows very large enclosures with filtered water "holes" (sweater boxes with filters etc).
My Greens had extremely Xlarge enclosures with very large filtered pools. Messy to clean but I will say the Greens I've observed do tend to stay in the water much longer then the yellows.
I'm not an expert by any means, just experience with the rescued guys.

Here are some pics of my big male green before he passed away last year.

He had that rubbermaid in every cage I put him in so he had access to water at all times! And we was the only snake I had that got a bath every week lol he would spend all day in the tub if you let him.

Re: Do you let them soak or not??
Well a healthy ball python would rarely soak...it will soak if the humidity is too low, the hot spot is too hot, or is trying to drown mites...but besides that ball pythons dont need a big bowl to soak in only something that can provide enough water for them....Ball pythons do swim in the wild but since most of the snakes are captive-bred they have little concern of swimming...But they would enjoy swimming once in a while...

I wasn't aware a ball python was a green. Not to mention this is under the anaconda section... Not trying to be rude or anything.

Re: Do you let them soak or not??
Had a green many years ago, provided her a "Kiddie Pool" for soaking that I cleaned regularly or when needed. She had a large enclosure and spent probably 75% of her time in the pool. Kids would bring me trout that they caught to come in and see the herps. She ate them, along with the gator, Nile & water monitors.
The yellow I currently have does soak and is provided the space to, and she's in there maybe 40% of the time.
I agree that if you own an aquatic/semi-aquatic animal, if you don't provide it with what it likes, you're an idiot. :rolleye2:

+1. Greens use the water to support the weight and Yellows do sometimes aswell, just not nearly as much. If somebody owns an anaconda and doesn't provide water for it to soak in all the time, they shouldn't have theirs.

Re: Do you let them soak or not??
I understand having an adult and unable to soak it but if its a baby sub adult it should be soaked.

Umm. No. If anything an adult SHOULD have a big enough water source to soak in. It helps them support their body weight. You try weighing 200lbs+ and see if you would like supporting all that weight constantly.

I give my yellow a big cat litter pan to soak in and she's always in and out. She's never in either place more than the other. The way I see it is yes, they, in wild are always in the water, so its a natural thing. But I also must say that in captivity they don't even know what a lake or marsh or what ever is...so you wouldn't be taking anything away since they never had it to begin with. That being said, I like to let my girl soak as much as she wants and I also think as long as humidity is right it shouldn't matter how you keep them, with or without a "pool" to chill in. Just my 2 cents!
