    Thinking of a carpet???
I am thinking of adding a carpet python to my small collection. I dont have alot of room so im thinking of the Irian Jaya. I have read alot on them so far, but I was hoping to get some opinions of actual owners. Anyone have any advice? also I havent been able to find the going price on one of these beauties, anyone know about what a hatchling or yearling will go for?

You know, I really don't recommend keeping any Morelia spilota subspecies in a cage smaller than 3x2x2.. having said that, I keep my Jungle in one of those. You can go with IJ, Jungle, and even some smaller Coastals in those cages.

Just shoot some questions, it's a little hard to encompass everything about them ;)

What is the difference between the quality and riff raff?? is it just the coloration of them?

Pretty much. Riff raff might likely be some % mix rather than pure IJ?

Now see, those are both examples of riff raff animals. The bottom one happens to be an unfortunate example of a jungle.

If you really don't think either one looks bad then you can get an animal for 50-75 bucks and be happy. Those are both said to be jungles. IJ's all pretty much look about the same to me. Some are super dark and many people love that. Some have a bright mid band and others enjoy that. Depends on what you like.

Oh, if it wasn't clear, I was kidding... I'm sure David knew...

He knows I love his jungle, it's one of the best ones I've ever seen!!

david, your problem is you're always hating on brown carpets... when in fact they are FAR superior!

    Re: Thinking of a carpet???
there are a few carpet peeps at the hamburg show... a couple with nice IJ's, but expect to pay a bit more for IJ's as they are not as common as a 'carpet mutt' or a brown jungle.

I was also wondering if the carpet pythons hide as much as ball pythons and corns do?

Does anything hide as much as ball pythons do?

Mines has been hiding more lately, because I think he's going into shed.

Otherwise they're always out... some keepers don't even provide hide boxes.

Hopefully I did not discourage you (referring to you comment about a "POS carpet") From past experience it's cool to have a carpet in general. These guys change with every shed, and a higher end one is a lot more fun to watch!

Colin, Coastals aren't my favorite, that's not a secret. However, you know I won't put them down.

I do recommend a hide for a pet carpet. I think you'll notice he uses it as a perch rather than a hide more often. Unless digesting a meal.
