Small boa?

I would love to get a boa. I think they are a great looking snake. My only problem is that I dont want a snake that gets over 7 or 8 feet. Are there any reasonably priced Boas that stay on the small side or am I out of luck?

Honestly if you go with a male colombian BCI it's very unlikely that it will top 7 or 8 feet. If you are set on a smaller locality there are a few other options. A hog island is the first that comes to mind. I'm sure some more experienced boa keepers will chime in at some point.

arent sand boas small? i think they only grow to like the size of a BP or smaller. and there pretty. i seen a baby one at the reptile show yesterday and it was only like 6 inches long :-p

Hi, there are a few dwarf boas. Some are lower priced than others. I acutally just purchased a pair of Sabogae "Pearl Island" boas, which only reach around five feet. They also do not grow as thick as BCIs or BCCs. Sabogaes are still a little on the expensive side, at least for ones that have paperwork. I dunno, I've got a Red Tail and I feel that's as big as I want to get length-wise for a snake with the exception of a Brazilian Rainbow Boa. I don't want a snake that gets so big that it takes more than 1 person to control it. Dwarfs would seem to be the way to go for you though. I'm not sure on the price of them though to be honest. I'm sure alot of other expert Boa owners can chime in on this subject with alot more detailed info. ;)

You should look into Rosy and Rubber Boas. They are both small docile excellent pets.

Hogg Island is the way to go.
Mabe pay more,but they top out at 6 feet with some girth.
They are very pretty animals,onley downfall is some do have the dwarf attitude.
But with time and handling they over come it quickly.
Not to mention they can change there pigment.
They can go from dark to light in a matter of minutes,which is pretty cool for a boa species.
Just a suggestion.
if not,just go all the way and get yourself a Columbian Boa.
They are not what you think and are great animals that yes can get big,but do have great personnalitys on them.
Especially if you grow them up as babies.
Obviously do your research before making your mind up.

They have several boa species that wont get that long, for instance bci the female will reach that length, but a male wouldn't and it would be years before he did if he was. Rosy boas & rubber boas like mentioned above don't get that long, and are nice. Hogg island boa is also nice, but you're goign to pay a little bit more, yet some of them can be mean. Sand boas are nice also, but I like arboreal snakes(that can wrap around and hang on), and they can't. If it were me I would look at either a male bci, or a hogg island.

Most Hog Islands I have worked with (30 or so), had wonderful temperaments. That being said, I've seen 8' females and 7' males. They are considered a "dwarf", but sometimes..they aren't really dwarf like. :)

I'd go with a Caulker Cay (Cay Caulker) or Crawl Cay, both max out at 5' (the longest ever recorded was around 6'). They stay small and most are pretty docile.

As a matter of fact, I know someone on here who has one listed for a more than decent price. :)

We have a dumerils boa. Not a hybrid Dumeril x madagascar ground but true Dumerils and should not get much larger than a BP in length. She is the most docile snake I have ever seen. Loves to sit in my wifes arms and hand out and seems to enjoy being touched. Eats GREAT! We got her (she is high pink) for 100.00 (she was feeding on live only at the time but a minth of live then a month of prekilled and then to FT and shes converted no problem

i just got a female hogg at the last show i went to. she is a great snake when she isnt shedding, but if she is anywhere near close. you should just leave her alone. i picked her up for 125 i think. it was deffiantly well worth it.

BCA "South Brazilian" is how they're marketed.
My male is expected to top out at 5 feet....he's that size now but slowly filling out in girth. He'll never be bigger than my BP.
