Best Field Herping Ever!! *DUW*

Re: Best Field Herping Ever!! *DUW*
Very nice pics!!
Were those all taken around Houston? I may be visiting some relatives in that area, and if so might have to poke around at field herping. I'm jealous of all the herps you have down there.

Way cool, that picture of the cottonmouth with it's mouth open and with the spider on it are awesome.
Nice job!

Great photographs, I wish I could put something together here in LA. My woods are like really cluttered and I don't like walking into spider webs, so I would have to find some place open like what you have.

I've been looking for a spot like this for years... finally found it :D
This place is only 10 mins away from my house and I never knew the amount of herps that were down there.
It's called Ad****s Reservoir, ask your relatives about it!

These woods are cluttered up too, apart from some open areas. Right now the spiders aren't too bad... the moment those banana spiders start coming around again I'll be too wimpy to go back ;)

Beautiful photos! Sorry you didn't find any A. contortrix though. :(

Re: Best Field Herping Ever!! *DUW*
Great photos!!! I love 'action' photos. It is great to catch life events such as eating, breeding, hatching, etc. Seeing those sorts of thing lets you know all is well in nature :D
Just wait until we get nights above 60 F here :) I can't wait until May...prime time breeding season...I plan on spending every weekend (and probably more) herping!!!

That's where I'd go when I lived in Houston! Best field herping to be had in the area, great for evening walks. I lived near I-10 and hwy 6 throughout high school, probably not too far from where you are?
Plenty of trails to hike. During the right times of the year you'll see more copperheads and cottonmouths than you know what to do with, so be careful out there and watch where you step ;)
I found they just love to sun themselves right on the walking paths.

to icygirl: another location to look into is brazos bend state park, it also has some pretty neat stuff. It's fairly likely you'll run into something interesting.

Yeah that's awesome, I live on Eldridge!
About the copperheads... where did you find them and at what time of year and day?
I've been looking for one for a long time, so as much info as possible would be great!

See, Brazos Bend hasn't been good for the past few years. Usually I'd see 2-3 snakes in a whole day, but lately I haven't seen any. I mean, yesterday I was in Ad****s Reservoir and found over 20 snakes in 4 hours...

Nice trip but where are the 20 snakes you found? Hahaha...
I added you as an MSN contact. I've really started getting into field herping this year and I have a few friends I go with now. They are in Austin though, it would be great to have someone to go with who is in town. Let's do stuff!

Hi!
Well a few Thamnophis and Nerodia were too quick to even see closely, let alone photograph. A few cottonmouth photographs weren't worthy to be put in this thread ;)
It would be super duper awesome to go herping with someone else!
I'll talk to you on msn!

On either end of summer usually on evening walks we'd run into copperheads now and again on the foot trails sunning themselves. May and August were usually good for them.
I never really actively sought them out, most of my time walking around there was just going on walks with the family and we'd run into them.
I love that 10+ snake days are the norm with good weather there :)

Re: Best Field Herping Ever!! *DUW*
I've been looking for the higher areas in Ad****s, and actually I live near the higher parts.
Hopefully some copperheads! I'm going out today for a few hours, wish me luck.

Re: Best Field Herping Ever!! *DUW*
SWEEET!!!! (We were camping in Austin during that storm...) We came across a few critters there! Great local finds, and amazing pics! :)

Re: Best Field Herping Ever!! *DUW*
Alright back from today's herping...
Two cottonmouths, two broad-banded water snakes, one unidentified water snake, one ribbon snake, one snapping turtle.
After this I'll stop posting pics!

Re: Best Field Herping Ever!! *DUW*
I just joined the FieldHerpForum in hope to find some good new herping spots around Houston... thing is that I don't drive and that it takes people years and years to find the right spots.
I just hope to find at least one copperhead and one coral snake in the next year.
