I almost got choked by Jerry!!

Well as you can tell from the title I alsmot got choked by Jerry. Now, I recently just got my first adult BP as of last week from a home that had been taking improper care of him. He is a great snake and after a bath he looks great, and is acting like we've been friends all along:)

So I have been letting him around my neck, and I have been handling him like hes my others so when he wrapped all the way around my neck yesterday I was curious to see how it would be in comparison to my smaller ones. So he get his tail all the way around, and it wasn't that bad. Then he wants to turn his body around my neck, and then the choking began. He tightend up and my face began to turn beat red. I thought maybe he'd loosen up so I waited before I began prying him off, but no dice. I started to panic cuz I started to see like that faint vision, and ripped him off of me. Thats the last time I do that haha. Has this ever happened to anyone lol?

p.s when i say ripped him off of me i don't mean like hurting him, I just slowly uncoiled him.

Mine grab on pretty tight but never to that point. They squeeze really hard when they feel like they are going to fall.

28 minutes and your complaining about no response. its a Wednesday morning/afternoon 90% of people are at work. no need to point out that no one has stopped in yet.

Easiest way to avoid that is not doing it at all.. or wait til you are comfortable with your snake to know how the snake acts..

If you run into that issue, just start with the tail and uncoil the snake.. if you try with the neck it's a losing battle haha the snake will just keep wrapping it's tail around you..

i didn't mean to sound antsy sorry, I just want replies fast damnit!!! Just kidding, but for real that was honestly my scariest encounter with any animal I think lol. I still love him though, he had no idea thats the best part about it too. And as it was happening my parents are doing there thing downstairs, so I'm imagining my parents coming up to there son dead with a BP around his neck. My mom was always against snakes too, she'd always say "what if they go around your neck," looks like shes was right haha.

also that is exactly what I did, cuz at first I couldn't find his tail and thats what scared me the most. I knew if I went for his head he would squeeze harder to gain balance lol. I could see it on the news now, "Boy dies from pet snake"

I never bought into the "let him wrap around your neck" theory. Personally, I think it's one of the craziest things you can do with a constrictor of any type. It takes very little pressure to fracture your larynx, or windpipe and cause fatal injuries. Even if the snake didn't mean to do it, once that happens, it's all over.
Regardless of how long you have owned your snake, something like this is always a possibility. Lesson learned and thank God it wasn't a lesson learned too late.

Yeah I was thinking that this is kind of a serious thing, funny too but your deffinately right! I don't think putting them around your neck and letting them drape over your shoulders is bad, its just letting them get snug around your neck is what you gotta watch for. I can you only imagine what it feels like on a mouse...

I agree with you!
I have never ever just let a snake,i mean even a Cornsnake as funny as that sounds wrap itself around my neck.
That is just a rule of thumb with any snake.
Glad you are o.k,but fortuanly it was a lesson learned on your part and you are o.k.

Too true, Grim. Collapsing your wind pipe is a definite consideration here. Something else to keep in mind is that getting choked out via the airway will take as long as you can hold your breath...however, should the jugular veins become compressed you're looking at only 4-6 seconds before loosing consciousness. Loosing consciousness with anything at all wrapped around your throat (constrictor or bad guy either one) is a good way to wake up dead.

I was looking at myself in the mirror too to see how "cool" i looked. I then took a breath and well, I couldn't. I slowly felt my face get engorged with blood and felt the pressure instantly! Your not exaggerating when you say 4-6 seconds at all. As soon as as he was completely around my neck and started to squeeze the lights were goin out slowly lol. I bet you if I waited maybe an extra 5 seconds to see if he would let off I'd be dead.

I seriously doubt it. To my knowledge, there's never been a record of a ball python killing a person. I'm sure it was scarey though.
