Bulb for Savannah Monitor
Well I'll be getting a Savannah monitor soon and want to know if this is a good source for his uvb?

Re: Bulb for Savannah Monitor
Compacts are horrible for reptiles and should NEVER be used. They can cause severe eye problems, lethargy, and even death. They should be avoided at all costs.
http://www.uvguide.co.uk/ this site deals with different types of UV for reptiles and has reviews for the bulbs. They also have more information about compacts.
I'd suggest using a MVB (Mercury Vapor Bulb) for your monitor. They provide heat and are a long lasting UV bulb with little burn out.

Go with the t-rex MVB it costs the same on LLLreptile.com
Re: Bulb for Savannah Monitor
You don't need UV, it has not be proven to change anything with monitors. Im not saying it may not have a positive effect but True breeders (not dealers) of monitors have successfully bred, hatched animals for many years with no uv lighting. Even some breeders that have used uv lighting said they haven't seen anything different.
To be honest i will be putting most of my monitors outdoors for a few hours in the summer time when im home as it may be use full to them and i want to give them a larger area to roam.

with or without adverse affect i would still feel safer using it just because i know they are diarnal(sp?) so its just for my insurance

Where did you get this information?!?!?! :weirdface:weirdface:weirdface:weirdface
Re: Bulb for Savannah Monitor
I was thinking the same thing about them not needing uvb BSM but im not the most experianced in moniters so I didnt say anything.
From what I know with other reptile experiance is that ( just my saying) If you cant rub it backwards it normally needs uvb and monitors you can mostly.
Re: Bulb for Savannah Monitor
I too have heard that many have kept monitors without UV/b successfully.

All this info is from other monitor keepers who have kept and bred monitors for 5+ years and from my own personal animals.
The key is a varied diet, that are high in nutrition. Prey items that were fed high quality foods which then were passed on to the monitors or you can you supplements.

"Repti Glo 10.0 Compact" - At the top of the page you provided. Any "spiral" bulb, or bulb that fits in a normal outlet (except for Mercury Vapor Bulbs), is a compact and should be avoided for now.
