Everything sounds good except for the heat lamp. If you have the UTH you do not need a heat lamp. Other than that you sound like you're good to go! :)

X2 I don't use my heat lamp at all. It dries it out too much. and my temps stay perfect. Make sure to set everything up before you get the little one. Just to be sure all the guages are reading, and the temps have time to adjust, as well as the humidity. :) Are you getting one from a breeder, or a pet store?

Don't use a lamp unless you need it. It's not what you want, it's what your snake needs. I'm sorry if you spent some extra money, but if your housing stays a good temp, and you turn on that lamp it's going to burn your snake. You can use the dimmer, but most likely the lamps isn't going to turn on very often.

I use lamps, because like you, my house stays around 67 in the winter, so keeping ambient temperatures at 80 is impossible without one. I use a red "party light" that I bought from wal mart. It's 25 watts and works great for my needs (cheap too). In order to keep humidity up, I put the water bowl under the lamp and I have no problems. Make sure you cover the top screen with foil or plastic or something to keep the humidity in and you'll be set.

hmmmm. i've seen people using a heat cable, but you would have to get a different thermostat. But you shouldn't need to measure the air above him. He regulates temps through his belly. So you should be measuring around his substrate. Sorry, I was biting at you. I thought you meant you had the lamp for a pretty red light. I wasn't understanding that you did need one. lol. :)

Not impossible, my house stays at 70, and my snakes cage never drops below 80. I have a 55 gal glass. It's not impossible. However, if a light is needed, then there should be one. As long as it's watched carefully.

No, but i did insulate three sides with some foam backing. I also have a waterfall, and a cup with paper towels to keep up the humidity. Her room also has a window that faces the sun, and i keep sheer curtains to keep the light out, but it lets the heat in. It could also be that her room sits across the living room, which stays the warmest because that's where the house thermostat is. It could be a hundred different things, but I think as long as lamps are on a dimmer, they should pose no threat. It's hard to tell someone how to set it up because every situation is different. :) Even though I am good at telling how to do it. lol.

The thermostat has a probe which you stick onto the UTH (on the outside of the cage). You then set the dial so you get between 90-94* on your thermometer measuring the UTH temperature. Once it is set you don't need to fiddle with it at all. That is the lovely thing about thermostats.

You can keep the lamp on a dimmer though so it just provides a little bit of heat to up your ambient temperature.
